My Thai Discovery Journey

My Thai Discovery Journey

Hi All,

Two weeks ago I decided that I needed to step outside my comfort zone and change my scenery by heading over to North Thailand for a month. It’s not a completely new experience as I have been in this area before but this time I will be there for longer, will venture further afield and will travel alone.

I am excited by this journey and intend it to be one of self discovery as much as absorbing the culture of this beautiful and friendly part of the world. My daily Yoga sessions and a Meditation Workshop have prepared me to be at peace with myself and being in this new environment will further facilitate a sense of calm as well as enlightenment.

I invite you to share my journey. I intend this thread to also serve as a travel diary and will post some pics.

I have woken early and am thinking about the last minute things that need to be done. Tonight I will be sleeping on a plane (hopefully as it’s not the easiest way for me to get rest) and come morning, I will be in a different country.

This trip is meant to be one of simplicity. I am taking just a carryon bag and won’t be partaking in the usual touristy types of things. I won’t to live the life there and am open to whatever unfolds. I have booked the first couple of nights accommodation and then will play it by ear.

So come along and let the adventure begin.

Day 9

It was lovely to wake up in Pai to the sounds of roosters and other birds chirping rather than traffic. Being that little bit out of town, I rented a bicycle to get around for the day.

In hindsight, I should have walked to the Main Street and acquired a decent one for the same price that the resort provided. It was a very clunky old bicycle with six gears and provided quite a challenge when navigating the many hills of Pai and its surrounds. Quite a workout.

After a simple breakfast at the resort which I shared with one of the resident dogs, I cycled into town to do a load of washing. I quenched my thirst with a mango smoothie whilst waiting for the load to finish.

Back to the resort to hang the clothes out and then on to explore a nearby geographical attraction - The Land Split. Located on the property of an organic farmer, this enormous crack in the ground came out of no where in 2008. There were no earthquakes or natural disasters, apparently the ground just opened up and the farmer found it that way.

In and of itself the Land Split is interesting, but the best part about the visit is in fact not the Split at all. When you arrive you will be greeted with smiles and a delicious selection of banana chips, papaya, peanuts, cassava and their special Rosella jam, juice and wine grown on the farm. All of which is especially refreshing on a warm day after cycling over the hilly terrain. Picked up an extra bottle of rosella wine to enjoy over the next couple of days.

Recharged, I cycled back, stopping at a “Pai” sign, taking in the view. Had a chicken and vegetable meal at a stall at the entrance to the resort and then had a wonderful shower, settling down to watch Manchester United win via iPad and a much needed sleep.

Day 10

Another quiet day. Walked to the cafe up the road in the morning to take in the view from there.

Then just hung around the resort with the two, sometimes three dogs.

In the evening, I walked to the Night Food Markets which were markedly quieter than the Friday night. Got some Thai Green Chicken Curry with Rice for dinner, had a look around and then took a taxi truck back to the resort.
