My Thai Discovery Journey

My Thai Discovery Journey

Hi All,

Two weeks ago I decided that I needed to step outside my comfort zone and change my scenery by heading over to North Thailand for a month. It’s not a completely new experience as I have been in this area before but this time I will be there for longer, will venture further afield and will travel alone.

I am excited by this journey and intend it to be one of self discovery as much as absorbing the culture of this beautiful and friendly part of the world. My daily Yoga sessions and a Meditation Workshop have prepared me to be at peace with myself and being in this new environment will further facilitate a sense of calm as well as enlightenment.

I invite you to share my journey. I intend this thread to also serve as a travel diary and will post some pics.

I have woken early and am thinking about the last minute things that need to be done. Tonight I will be sleeping on a plane (hopefully as it’s not the easiest way for me to get rest) and come morning, I will be in a different country.

This trip is meant to be one of simplicity. I am taking just a carryon bag and won’t be partaking in the usual touristy types of things. I won’t to live the life there and am open to whatever unfolds. I have booked the first couple of nights accommodation and then will play it by ear.

So come along and let the adventure begin.

Day 7

Still nursing a temperamental stomach so I took it easy again. Got some work done in the morning. I wake up at 5:20am and head downstairs to the lobby where the wifi is stronger. There’s a kettle there to make tea.

Being the King’s Cremation Day, the town was eerily quiet and I was flat out finding much that was open. It was nice, however, to wander the streets between showers amidst the quiet. There were memorials like this everywhere and masses of tubs of yellow marigolds which was his favourite colour.

Saw some interesting wall art and was able to stop and look around at a slower pace.

Don’t you just love the Thai wiring?

Heaps of dogs around but not nearly as pampered as our pets. This one was lucky to have some bedding.

I put off the trip to Pai but have booked a van for later today - 762 curves in the road - three hours drive. Motion sickness meds at the ready 😱🤔

@soul I saw a bit on the news about the Kings burial. I must say I felt for the pooch and wanted to rest him on my bed in a bit more comfort. Good you're enjoying your time away apart from queezy stomach that is. Thanks for the pics.

Day 8

Today I farewelled Chiang Mai for now and headed up to the little town of Pai. A mini van picked me up from the hotel. As the driver navigated the streets at breakneck speed, I tightened my seatbelt and wondered if I would reach my destination in tact.

He took me to the Chiang Mai bus station where thankfully I changed vehicles and a more sedate driver took the wheel. The journey was in a word - horrible. I had taken two motion sickness tablets before I set off and had only consumed a light breakfast but those 762 curves took their toll. I put my earphones in and closed my eyes trying to block any stimuli that may have played havoc with my vestibular system but I was fighting to hold back the nausea.

The assortment of tourists from many corners of the world who had started the journey with me in full chatter gradually became more and more quiet as they bowed their heads feeling the same effects as me.

We stopped off at an interesting roadside stall but food was the furtherest thing on my mind. I checked Google Maps to see how much longer the trip was.

Driving into Pai itself, I was confronted with a sea of visitors, mostly young hippie looking backpackers and Chinese tourists. I took a taxi to the place that is to be home for the next leg of the trip. After an hour or so I felt much better.

It is like a little piece of paradise - away from the noise of traffic. There are three dogs on the property and I haven’t seen any other guests so far.

My little cottage.

The view.

It’s a bit out of the town area so I took a taxi into the “Walking Street” which I found quite delightful. Heaps of stall holders selling handicrafts and all manner of food. Dinner was a fruit smoothie and a very tasty version of Pai Thai.

After wandering through the markets, I walked the 35 minuets back to the “resort” and had a very restful sleep.

I wouldn't want to do that bus trip @soul. Sounds horrible. The view from your accommodation looks amazing. Probably worth the trip & your accommodation looks really inviting.
Can't wait to hear what you get up to tomorrow.
