My Thai Discovery Journey

My Thai Discovery Journey

Hi All,

Two weeks ago I decided that I needed to step outside my comfort zone and change my scenery by heading over to North Thailand for a month. It’s not a completely new experience as I have been in this area before but this time I will be there for longer, will venture further afield and will travel alone.

I am excited by this journey and intend it to be one of self discovery as much as absorbing the culture of this beautiful and friendly part of the world. My daily Yoga sessions and a Meditation Workshop have prepared me to be at peace with myself and being in this new environment will further facilitate a sense of calm as well as enlightenment.

I invite you to share my journey. I intend this thread to also serve as a travel diary and will post some pics.

I have woken early and am thinking about the last minute things that need to be done. Tonight I will be sleeping on a plane (hopefully as it’s not the easiest way for me to get rest) and come morning, I will be in a different country.

This trip is meant to be one of simplicity. I am taking just a carryon bag and won’t be partaking in the usual touristy types of things. I won’t to live the life there and am open to whatever unfolds. I have booked the first couple of nights accommodation and then will play it by ear.

So come along and let the adventure begin.

Re: My Thai Discovery Journey

Second one @Former-Member. No tuk tuks in Pai. Yep, travelled here by myself but feel very safe except for some street dogs that bark at night. That’s why I take a taxi back to my room.

Day 12

Am loving these early mornings, getting up in the dark to settle out on the front porch to do some work and then all of a sudden the day breaks as if a light is switched on.

I get visited by the resident dogs which I have nicknamed Dingo and Phantom, some chooks and birds.

I did some exploring today, taking the back streets into the township and saw some quaint stuff, some epic stuff and some strange stuff.

I’m feeling very relaxed here - it’s hard not to be. No plans - just taking it day by day. Have booked a couple more night’s stay and am thinking about taking a bit of a day trip but not sure I want to be surrounded by hippie 20 somethings.

Found a place to have some sushi for a change. “Chef Golf” is a Thai National who has travelled and lived around the world cooking for the rich and famous. I ate up at the bar where he was preparing the food and he had lots of interesting stories to tell.

Oops - got out of order.

Day 11

Woke up to a chilly morning - 19 degrees; misty and a slight drizzle. I sat out on the front deck enjoying the reprieve from the heat and was visited by a couple of roosters, a cat and one of the resident dogs as the sun A little later, I enjoyed breakfast of scrambled egg on toast and a fruit platter.

Another quiet day, spent mostly at the resort (if you could call it that), had a dip in the pool and went down the road for a chicken chilli basil stir fry.

Day 13

Enjoying the cool fresh air of Pai. Did some more exploring through the back streets seeing first hand in a gentle and natural way how the locals live.

In contrast, I had dinner at a trendy kind of cafe. Not too much to report but got some nice pics.

Day 14

Wanted to see a bit more of the Pai outer areas but was reluctant to be jammed in with twenty something hippies in the back of a taxi truck so I took the plunge and hired a driver for a half day excursion. Turned out to be quite reasonable dollarwise in comparison.

First, I went up to the Temple on the Hill (Wat Phra That Mae Yen) with its giant white Buddha that I had seen from my resort. Pretty epic and the views from up there were quite amazing. 400 steps to reach the top.

After that, I stopped for a juice and slice at the Earth Tone Vegetarian Cafe. Must go back there to taste more of their delicious food.

Next we stopped by the roadside where I fed a female elephant called Om. I was a bit hesitant but the driver pushed me forward so that I could pat her head.

Then it was onto the Memorial Bridge, a rickety old construction built by Japanese soldiers from the WW2 days.

After that, I went to Pai’s Grand Canyon - not as grand as the one in USA but lovely all the same and there I watched the sunset.

Back to the Walking Street for a chicken Pad Thai dinner and then home to the resort. All in all, a great day.
