My mental health respite

My mental health respite

So, I wanted to share with you my respite away from home that I'm hoping will unstuck the stuck me, and reset my neurological pathways to a different outlook. This place, in the burbs of Perth is a little haven of homeliness and gentle care. There's a small number of people here of various diagnoses, and we share rooms with same sex. So there's 2 other ladies in my room. It's a large home, and essentially you have to care for yourself. No one makes you do anything you don't want, but if you want to chat about life, your MI and get some perspective & guidance, there's nurses here 24/7. Obviously, you have to hand over your meds, and no drugs and alcohol are permitted.

The head nurse is a DBT Guru, something that @CheerBear, @Pheonix_Rising & @Zoe7 would love to have a natter with. He's very perceptive but gently proves and before i knew it, Id told him everything (well, a scaled down version). He said I was holding so much stress, more than most, and was surprised how 'normal' I presented. He recognised my recent high levels of anxiety, and how that was impacting my inability to feel comfortable with change.

I've been here since Friday afternoon. Saturday I had an anxiety meltdown, and thought it was nuts being here, and I was probably better to admit myself to hospital as I was very intent on doing major harm to myself. A phone call to my case manager set me right, plus a prn, and essentially riding out the storm. Sunday was a better day, where I walked to get a paper, stopped for a coffee, and also stopped at a greengrocer. Dinner was a communal affair on this night, and although conversation was minimal, it was nice to be among others. I haven't made any buddies here, as I've essentially kept to myself. But I took a walk yesterday with a patient & nurse, and I repeated the walk on my own today.

So I've agreed to be here until next Monday, as going home on the weekend could bring me undone. It's the time I feel most lonely and despair, and when my impulses to SH are highest. Every day I will do a little work with one of the nurses on DBT stuff especially interpersonal skills and distress tolerance skills.

The really great thing is I can come back here anytime things get unbearable & hospital isn't a option. And I can call the nurses if I'm distressed or in crisis as they know my history. It's good to have another support option. There is only two places like this in Perth. It's a shame there's not more.

I'll back with an update tommorrow.

Day 7 of respite

@outlander @Former-Member @Former-Member @Former-Member @Zoe7 @Faith-and-Hope @CheerBear@OverTheEdge @Former-Member

Well, today was a most interesting day. I attended a BPD networking event thus morning. It's such a shame I can't say what is was, due to anonymity reasons, but it was very insightful, interesting and informative. I met some really interesting people, got connected with some possible projects and came away feeling like we ate finally making some inroads into better care for patients with BPD. There's going to be good things happening for WA, it might take time & pressure, but I believe times are turning.

I was pretty cranky with my house mate this morning, who asked to get some cigarettes for her last night (she doesn't have a car). It wasn't far to a servo, so I agreed. When I got home last night she said she didn't have cash but she'd go to an atm this morning. I even offered to drive her there. When this morning came, she gave me a feeble excuse her neice hadn't transferred money, so she was going to visit her. I couldn't wait for her return as I had things already planned. What she doesn't realise is she's left me very short this weekend until I get CL money on Monday. It just feels like I'm being deceived again, and it's getting harder to trust her.

So I went back to the respite centre just after lunch. I really wanted to speak to the head nurse, as I was quite angry about yesterday & today, and I needed to vent. We also went over my dbt files a bit, and he's putting together some resources for me to take home next week. He asked me how I deal with my anger, which I usually internalise. I said sometimes I thrown stuff or kicked something(no, not the cat!). He gave me some very simple deflection strategies, and ended our chat by saying 'would you like to break a plate'! I was like you're a nurse, and you're giving permission for me to break a plate? He told me we would pick a plate each as there was loads, and sure enough, there were 2 that were a bit cracked and worn. We did give a bit of warning of 'drama ahead', he smashed his first, which gave me the courage to build up momentum and smash mine. A few surprised faces popped out wondering if everything was ok. Yep, all good and we cleaned up the mess (it was outside) together. It was a good feeling, doesn't make the troubles go away, but my anxiety today is down a notch or two. I really like this nurse! He is a bit unconventional, which is sometimes what the world needs.

I was pretty tired after the plate throwing release of energy, so I actually had a nap of an hour or so. I've had a simple dinner, and I'm still pretty tired, so it might be an early night. Thanks for reading.

@Sans911. Just catching up with your thread now. So glad you have found such a good respite center. It sounds like a supportive place to 'regroup' - so to speak.
Today sounds like a tough day. More challenges for you. No easy decisions there.
Sending good thoughts your way. Hope tomorrow is a better day

Re: My mental health respite

Thanks @utopia. I appreciate you've taken the time to read my thread. That means something. This whole week has been tough, I've had to be honest and real with where I'm at (or not at) and I'm facing a lot of uncertainty,. That makes me feel really uncomfortable. But finding another supportive 'ear' who gets me has been helpful.

Re: My mental health respite

Wow @Sans911, sounds like you have had a few jam packed days with lots of things happened.

Firstly, love, love, love the plate breaking moment. Maybe you could go to the op shop, buy a lot of old plates and break them at home when needed. This head nurse does sound a bit unconventional, but I think that is a good thing. Sort of like thinking outside the box!

So happy for you that the BPD networking event went well. Sounds like only positive (abit slow however) actions can come out of it.

Thanks for the updates Sans. Always look forward to reading your posts

Nell

Hi @Sans911

Your BPD networking sounded really interestingly and a good start to the day. Good to read your anxiety is down a notch too - sounds like your nurse may have helped towards that by helping you to release some inner tension.

I was sorry to read that your housemate took advantage of your good nature financially. I can read in your post that this did adversely effect you. And you have every reason to feel upset about this. You are beautiful person but it is okay to say no to those who have displayed they are not dependable or trustworthy. As by allowing it all is achieved is that feeling of anger that we were used.

So many of us having trouble saying no but to protect our own mental well being this is sometimes essential. It also helps raise our self esteem to put our foot down not allowing others to take advantage take and use us.

I look forward to reading how tomorrow goes for you 🤗 xx

That's great @Sans911 that you have found someone who understands you. You are in a vulnerable position right now - opening up andrreally looking at yourself. I'm glad you are in such a safe space to do it.

Day 8 of Respite-Saturday

@outlander @Former-Member @Former-Member @Former-Member @Zoe7 @Faith-and-Hope @CheerBear @OverTheEdge @Former-Member

Well, I'm writing this on Sunday, because yesterday I pretty much stayed away from the forums and I ended up wiping myself out in the afternoon and evening. I already struggle enough with weekends as it is. I had intentions of going out for a wander or a walk or both. But the weather was so gloomy, it matched my mood perfectly. And the dynamics and people in this respite place have changed, so just when I started to say a little more than hello, there are new and different faces. And obviously you all know from reading this what is coming up next week, and I'm dreading it. I did speak to one of the nurses, who has studied law and he gave me some good information, which was helpful.

Essentially I slept for much of the day and night yesterday. I turned my phone to silent, and didn't answer any messages or calls. I feel myself slipping back, and am trying desperately to keep some kind of momentum going, but it's hard, really hard when you don't have anything to look forward to.

Re: My mental health respite

Sharing your weather here @Sans911 ..... and dreading this week's appointment too.

Just want to sit here and hug you for a bit .....

Can you create a post-traumatic-event goal of something special to do for you ? Something that is a self-care thing, like a massage, or hair appointment ..... even if there is no joy in it ? Something where someone is looking after you, despite the fact that you're paying for that to happen ? I find it helps without focussing too much on the actual activity ..... it means that there is something to cast your eyes beyond the event to place focus on.
