MY STORY - THE JOURNEY HAS JUST BEGUN

MY STORY - THE JOURNEY HAS JUST BEGUN

So this is my story (Sorry a long one)

My name is Nell, 39, Married with two children, 12 and 9.

For the last 16 years I have been a secondary school teacher working in challenging schools with students having high rates of trauma themselves. For the last 6 years, I have been working directly with students that come to school with a bucket load of problems. Used to be daily on the phone to DHHS or child protection so it seemed.

So there have been lots of incidents that I have had to deal with at work from drug overdoses, racial fights, gang conflicts, suicide attempts and many more. And yes, this is the students I am talking about.

About 3 months ago I had to physically stop a student from committing suicide. Well that took me over the edge. Started having panic attacks, anxiety and flashbacks of that and other things that had happened at work. Ended up taking time off work and still on work cover now.

From this however, a past trauma from my childhood that I had locked away for a long time then came to the surface. This casued severe anxiety issues, panic attacks, flashbacks, nightmares and self harm.

So I am now seeing a psychologist weekly and my psychologist has made me book into seeing a psychiatrist which I see in October.

I have been diagnosed with anxiety, depression and PTSD. I am just beginning this journey and am trying to navigate my way through all of this mess as well as trying to deal with work cover. Thank go I am in the Education Union!

Some days are ok, some days are crap. Some days all I do is manage to get the kids to school and thats it. Some days I need to take it hour by hour and if i can get out of bed than thats a win.

So that is my journey so far and it really has just begun. I know I have a long way to go until I am back to my normal self, but I guess the question I ask myself is, what is normal?

You don't need to apologise @Former-Member ..... your feelings are perfectly valid ..... and that is what the forums are here for, to be real about what we are thinking and feeling ..... to be supported without judgement .... for others who know our lived experience personally to hold out that knowing hand and help you tonfind your way through the dark, and those of issues who don't have the same sort of lived experience just to sit with you in compassion and empathy anyway ......

Hugs n hugs Hon ..... 💐💕

Thanks @Faith-and-Hope, appreciate your words. Just having a bad week and got some bad news today and that's just taken me over the edge. I just don't want to do it anymore.

That sounds really tough @Former-Member ......

Please keep your children close in your heart and keep swimming as best you can.

I know you are shy of talking to support services owing to bad experiences in the past, but the moderators here are available on the Sane chat line and they are really good to us ..... please give them a try ..... si is not at all unusual here.

💜💐💕

Thanks @Faith-and-Hope, but that is something I can't do. I am not taking any chances of going through what I did last time.

Thanks @Faith-and-Hope for your words today. Really appreciate it. It is so much easier discussing this with someone when you don't have to explain everything and they just get it.

Re: MY STORY - THE JOURNEY HAS JUST BEGUN

You will find that here a lot @Former-Member ..... and yeah, it's such a load off. While many of us have professional support beyond the forums, this has come to feel like home ..... you are probably sensing that with the Good Morning and Good Night threads ..... and there are many others.

When you feel like a bit of a pick-me-up there are art threads, cat threads, highlight of The day, feel good moments, 365 Project ...... the Search bar will help you find them, or you can go via the Home page to the Looking After Ourselves discussion topic and have a browse there.

Re: MY STORY - THE JOURNEY HAS JUST BEGUN

So I have decided to continue on with my story and hopefully there are people out there (and I am sure that there are) that can relate to it.

When i first told my story I just said I went through a trauma as a child and has just resurfaced recently.

So when I was about 8, I was sexually abused by a family member for about 2 years. For a long time I had blocked out the memories of this and continued with my life.

Until a couple of months ago, I had never said a word to anyone. The only person I have told my story to is my psychologist. I never told anyone at the time and even my husband does not know what has happened.

One question I have is has anyone gone through something llike this and if so how have they broken the news to their partners about what happened to them? Also, how did that partner react to the news?

I have been working with the psychologist on my feelings over the sexual abuse but another question is: Has anyone else gone through this and felt shame/embarrassment/guilt over it? I know it was not my fault as I was a child and this other person was an adult, but there is still that feeling of guilt associated with it, especially with the fact that I didn't speak up at the time.

I understand that this is a difficult subject and that it may be a trigger for people going through something similar, but thought I would put it out there.

Nell

Re: MY STORY - THE JOURNEY HAS JUST BEGUN

Hi @Former-Member

There are a lot of other people here with a CSA (Childhood Sexual Assault) back-story who are struggling in their adult lives as a consequence of this, and perhaps other compound issues. Generally those threads carry the words * Trigger Warning * in their title for obvious reasons, but yes, the stories are here, along with a lot of compassion, support, advice, and understanding.

I am loathe to tag other here who have that particular history, but I think some will find your thread in due course. You can use the Search bar to locate threads too, but please go gently with the content for your own emotional safety.

Tagging the people who posted and asking whether they would mind helping you with a few questions regarding your own situation, if they are okay to do that, is a good way to start.
