The Walking for Wellbeing Thread

The Walking for Wellbeing Thread

Following on from the outstanding success of "The Great Yoga Adventure Thread", here begins one that may appeal to a larger sector of the Sane Forum population. Although I have started it in the Lived Experience side, anyone is welcome to join us as we put one foot in front of the other and walk to improve our mental and physical wellbeing.

I hope you will accompany me. Here we can talk about how, when, where and why we walk. It's a place to discuss our progress and share what we see along the way.

Walking is my thing. I love it. I do it in several ways. During the weekdays, I get up early and take a brisk walk usually stopping in along the way at the supermarket to pick up some groceries. Around mid morning, I take my dog for a stroll. Then late afternoon, I walk to and from a yoga session. Lastly, at night, it's another walk for the pooch.

On weekends, I like to go a bit further afield and discover new stuff. I often take photos as well during these walks.

I use an App on my phone called Pacer which monitors the distance and steps that I walk. I do a minimum of 10 000 steps each day. Some of you may be more high tech and have a Fitbit or equivalent.

Re: The Walking for Wellbeing Thread

Today I estimate I walked about 1.25km in total, including indoor steps. Most of them would have been outdoor steps going to and from my appointment. I was very tired again today so I felt I did okay to get out walking at all. I could only walk slowly. My legs wouldn't carry me faster.

I also got my cheap imitation fitbit in the mail. However my mobile won't download the app from the Google Play store because the app needs a higher version of Android. Which means the wrist device itself won't work. The seller has suggested an alternative but my mobile doesn't like the app and is giving me warnings it might damage my mobile. Other tech complications I won't bore you with. Dang.

Perhaps I just need to keep estimating. After all, it's the walking that matters.

Edit: A question: how many steps do you think there would be on average in a kilometre?

Re: The Walking for Wellbeing Thread

Google says that there are 1250 steps in a walking km @Mazarita. Can you download an app onto your phone and carry that with you? I know that they were giving a step counter away if you bought three packets of Special K cereal. Saw it at Woolies.

Re: The Walking for Wellbeing Thread

@soul, thanks, I'll make a note of that. It means I walked about 1563 steps today. I think, at this stage of my progress, trying for ten times that is an unrealistic daily goal for me. I think I'd better work up to 5000 steps, as I estimate them to be.

The reason I don't use an app on my mobile is that I have a tablet/phone. The app you recommended didn't work. It only counted a small number of steps and then cut out every time my screen went off. I tried to fiddle with all the settings but nothing helped. I thought in the end it was because it was designed for a smaller device. Or something I just couldn't work out.

So I've decided estimation will be the way forward for me.

Re: The Walking for Wellbeing Thread

Another day in front of the computer today @soul have set a timer to go for a walk every 2 hours,

Have done this when putting in big days study at the uni before and worked out well for me. That and every time I get up to go for a coffee I put the cup down and go for a walk instead. coffee count a bit on the high side at the moment so work on achieving 2 goals at once.

Re: The Walking for Wellbeing Thread

Just did my first 2 hourly planned walk to the end of the driveway and back. 1000 steps. Going to try for 3 more times before the day is over. Managed to to get through 600ml of water as an added bonus.

If nothing else it loosened up a lot of congestion and phlegm.

LoL @Faith-and-Hope, my darling wants to bring the children out with some KFC for lunch, that will kind of undo all of my hard work. Will be nice to have lunch with them though and it would be kfc with or without the walking so more incentive to get into the walking.

Attaboy @Detemined ..... 🏅

I had to learn to dilute KFC and other such, cos once WH started working his excess hours from home, the KFC and other such followed him home ..... all day every day ..... !!

Here's a tip ..... grab some wholemeal bread and make yourself a KFC sandwich, together with some coleslaw if it's your taste. The wholemeal bread will help you limit the serve and save some of your hard-won endeavours from the slippery slope ......

Order coen cobs with that, and have a coffee or something beforehand to take the edge off your appetite so you don't inhale half the barrel before you know it ..... remember its rocket-fuel in terms of energy output ..... so half a barrel equates to how many trips to the front gate and back in the next 24 hours ?

Even within the bread ..... remember to ditch the guilt and enjoy the moment ..... ❣️

Re: The Walking for Wellbeing Thread

Drink lots of water @Determined - then you'll have to make extra trips to the toilet - more walking! I do that and go to the upstairs toilet - increased effort.

Re: The Walking for Wellbeing Thread

No upstairs toilet @soul but the water chiller is upstairs. I am actually taking the stairs too as a bonus. I usually take the lift as I have balance issues on stairs (mostly going down) but managing it for now.
