The Walking for Wellbeing Thread

The Walking for Wellbeing Thread

Following on from the outstanding success of "The Great Yoga Adventure Thread", here begins one that may appeal to a larger sector of the Sane Forum population. Although I have started it in the Lived Experience side, anyone is welcome to join us as we put one foot in front of the other and walk to improve our mental and physical wellbeing.

I hope you will accompany me. Here we can talk about how, when, where and why we walk. It's a place to discuss our progress and share what we see along the way.

Walking is my thing. I love it. I do it in several ways. During the weekdays, I get up early and take a brisk walk usually stopping in along the way at the supermarket to pick up some groceries. Around mid morning, I take my dog for a stroll. Then late afternoon, I walk to and from a yoga session. Lastly, at night, it's another walk for the pooch.

On weekends, I like to go a bit further afield and discover new stuff. I often take photos as well during these walks.

I use an App on my phone called Pacer which monitors the distance and steps that I walk. I do a minimum of 10 000 steps each day. Some of you may be more high tech and have a Fitbit or equivalent.

Re: The Walking for Wellbeing Thread

@Former-Member it's a terribly lonely place when you have mental illness. I wouldn't wish this on anyone. And I never imagined ever feeling this low. It's even worse then when I had depression in my late teens

Re: The Walking for Wellbeing Thread

Walking is my main Meditation time and I like it to be a solitary activity most of the time. When I walk my dog the pace is very much slowed down. She's getting older and likes to sniff a lot. I walk with my daughter and dog maybe two or three times a week and we get to have a bit of a chat if she's in the mood.

It's been warm here too where I am but not 36 degrees @Former-Member. That must be uncomfortable. Best to go early in the morning then or at night. Sounds much cooler in your neck of the woods @Maggie. I wonder what sort of summer we are going to have.

I know the isolation thing too well @Sans911 and @Former-MemberI rarely listen to the radio unless I am in a car which isn't often. I don't put the to on. I glance over the news on the Internet. I think I know enough but it would be nice to have a discussion about interesting stuff now and then and not just "Are you going to be home for dinner?"

Hope you enjoyed your garden walk @Determined. I must make an effort to walk somewhere pretty this spring.

You're right about the mood thing @Faith-and-Hope. It does lift my spirits.

My steps for today. I was out and about a bit.

@Faith-and-HopeYou are so thoughtful and kind. I did have a coffee and sandwich at one of the cafes, but all around me was people connecting, sharing good times, laughing and enjoying each others company. It just reinforced that I am single, friendless and have minimal contact with anyone. I have no friends here anymore, even though I was born here. I have been away from my hometown too long. My house mate is isolating herself as much as I am, so we can go days before we speak more than a few words to each other. I have tried volunteer work of varous sorts this last year, but again, I feel useless sometimes, like a spare cog that doesn't quite have a place to fit. But maybe I will look into it. Thanks for your thoughts and input.

Re: The Walking for Wellbeing Thread

I can relate to those feelings @Sans911. With my hubby having an undiagnosed mi we are just sort of sharing the space of our home, and trying to co-parent, but that is a strain as his mi has altered his perception, and made him controlling and emotionally abusive in ways he can't even recognise ..... and there is only so much you can talk about any of this with family, friends and acquaintances ..... so it becomes very isolating. I don't know how I would be coping without the forums.

I have made acquaintanceships with the staff at my local cafe, which gives me a comfortable zone to escape to, almost daily. It's just being in conpany of others, usually on my phone on the forums (they have wifi there) or doing a crossword ..... but it is companionable at least .....

Re: The Walking for Wellbeing Thread

That is hard to see isn't it @Sans911. That's why I avoid areas like that. I do my shopping first thing in the morning before people have gathered for a drink or meal together. Your housemate sounds like my daughter. She shuts herself away in her room and I often just message her. That's sad isn't it. If I go upstairs and knock on her door, it's often "What do you want? I'm watching something."

I am making an effort to go out and have planned little things. Trying not to feel self conscious but to just enjoy the experience.

Glad you have that cafe as your little outlet @Faith-and-Hope. How are the plans going for the move?

Re: The Walking for Wellbeing Thread

I can't stand gossip @soul.Caused my mother to get the shits with me at times because I have to say "I don't want to know"It agitates me .I avoid people I know because I have no interest in having a conversation and usually what they have to say usually triggers me.Walking is my solidarity time, that's why I walk up the bush.I know it sounds awful but the long term effects of depression and down and out is I don't care if anyone is alive or d***.I just want to be left alone because I am lost,at times I wonder if I'm too far gone.
