The Walking for Wellbeing Thread

The Walking for Wellbeing Thread

Following on from the outstanding success of "The Great Yoga Adventure Thread", here begins one that may appeal to a larger sector of the Sane Forum population. Although I have started it in the Lived Experience side, anyone is welcome to join us as we put one foot in front of the other and walk to improve our mental and physical wellbeing.

I hope you will accompany me. Here we can talk about how, when, where and why we walk. It's a place to discuss our progress and share what we see along the way.

Walking is my thing. I love it. I do it in several ways. During the weekdays, I get up early and take a brisk walk usually stopping in along the way at the supermarket to pick up some groceries. Around mid morning, I take my dog for a stroll. Then late afternoon, I walk to and from a yoga session. Lastly, at night, it's another walk for the pooch.

On weekends, I like to go a bit further afield and discover new stuff. I often take photos as well during these walks.

I use an App on my phone called Pacer which monitors the distance and steps that I walk. I do a minimum of 10 000 steps each day. Some of you may be more high tech and have a Fitbit or equivalent.

Hi @Maggie, in my book, every step counts and is a move forward in the direction we want to go.

Read the article @Former-Member. Yes, I agree that unrealistic goals can be a deterrent and dangerous. I just try to do more than 10000 steps a day. That's achieveable for me since I do quite a bit of walking and have built it into my routine.

Two dog walks - one short, one longer. A walk to get groceries. Then walking to and from yoga.

It's raining tonight so my pooch didn't get her second walk. She doesn't seem to mind. Still managed just over the 10 000 steps.

Good effort to you all, especially if the weather isn't conducive to being outside.

Another down day but 12,865 steps. Hoping tomorrow is much cooler as it was 36 degrees here today.

@Former-Member 36 must feel like being in hell. 2600 steps from me. Well done with all those steps today. Hope it cools down tomorrow. 18 here and raining.

Re: The Walking for Wellbeing Thread

@soul@Maggie@Former-Member@Former-Memberwell, the rain has cleared finally so I managed a 3km walk in my city's main park. I'm not sure if was a good idea or not. Yes, the nature was beautiful, lots of wildflowers and such. But all it did was reinforce how isolated I'm making myself, and how disconnected from everyday life I've become. I don't watch TV anymore, rarely pick up a paper & my Facebook use is less and less. Today I feel so much more alone, which has heightened other less helpful feelings. Ugh, why does trying to recover have to be so hard? Time to go home

We went for a walk in a botanic gardens this afternoon, just checked my step count now and it is only 3900, Im a little dismayed, thought it would have been much higher. Obviously we were walking really slow lol .

@Sans911 My day sounds like yours, thank goodness it's coming to an end. Then to do it all again tomorrow. Ugh!!! Walking with you, if it's any help.

Re: The Walking for Wellbeing Thread

Excercise can help with mood stabilisation across time @Sans911 ... so you are now 3km closer to that mark .... and if you walk there regularly, you might begin to make acquaintance ships with other park-walkers and strike up some conversation.

Coffee or tea in the outdoor cafe might help bring you out and about more too.

Would you be up for volunteering as a guide for visitors there ? There is some sort of opening, sort of like being a volunteer at the zoo or the aquarium.

I hope this helps .....

🤗
