Is mental illness real?

Is mental illness real?

I'm starting to think not.

I think I'm just a useless failure of a human being and I have troub;e coping with this fact. It's not a real thing,I see this in the way most psychiatrists treat you like less than human. I'm not human. It's all just a joke.

And even with all this 'treatment' I'll always be me, a complete failure of a human being. It can't change who I am. So what's the point?

The problem is that if I cancel my psychiatrist appointment and don't get my blood tests done regularly they'll know. I don't know what to do. I could go to the appointments and lie, but how do I fake the blood tests? Can I just opt out? Tell them I'm done? Do they care? What's the point of all this?

Re: Is mental illness real?

Thanks everyone.
To be clear I wrote an email to my therapist about all the big stuff I'm too scared to tell anyone.
I'm terrified. I'm physically sick with how stressed I am right now.
I'll be fine, I know that. It's just stressful waiting for a response. And my crazy brain thinks that he agrees and that he thinks I should be dead. And I'm scared of doing that.
I told him cause I want it to go away, but I don't know if it was the right thing. Part of me knows that it's true. A tiny part of me thinks that it's not.
I just know I'm too scared to act on it. So I have no other options.

Anyway, sorry for my rambling. I'm just stressing.

@Former-Member - I think I got mixed up and it was a uni person who didn't reply to your email not your psych, last time. Sorry.

Hoping you can find something to help you feel safe and secure while you ride out the tough wait to hear back.

Re: Is mental illness real?

@Former-Member is there anything you can do to ease the physical symptoms? Sometimes warm water is soothing - a long shower. Sometimes when my stress is really getting the better of me I try and do something to take care of my physical self. Thinking of you.

I'm in the library right now. Trying to study and distract myself.
Don't want to be at home with my parents right now.

Re: Is mental illness real?

Hi @Former-Member, I'm really sorry to hear you are feeling so terrified. Scared feelings super super suck.

I am not totally up to-date with your story, but what I'm hearing is that you are scared your therapist is going to think you should be dead. Is that right? I have had a therapist tell me that I am f*cking evil and that I should "just f*cking do it" in reference to suicide. He was wrong and it wasn't ok for him to say that to me. That was abuse. Given that I have had that experience, I cannot promise you that your therapist won't say something similar to you. However, I am 99.9% certain that he won't. And if he does, that won't make it true.

It sounds like you have been amazingly brave to send the email and I can certainly relate to the agony of waiting for a response. I wish I could do more than sit with you while you wait. But alas, that is all I can do...and I will do it gladly. We can sit in the nest and wait for the email together.

Re: Is mental illness real?

I think I should be dead and I think anyone that really knows me thinks that too. I'm scared that by telling him the truth that he will think this too.
I'm horrified that a therapist said that to you. I'm glad you're not.
I'm just scared.
Thank you for sitting with me.

Re: Is mental illness real?

@Former-Member That's ok, I'm happy to sit with you...although after this post I'll be sitting with you while I head off to bed.

I can hear that you are scared, and big scared feelings tend to flood our brains and make the thinking bits not work so well. However, if you can maybe look at what you said in your response to me, it might be a tiny bit helpful. On the one hand you are terrified that your therapist will think you should be dead. Yet on the other hand, you can hear how utterly wrong it is for a therapist to say such a thing to a client. So...logically, it is highly improbable that your therapist will think or say such a thing, and if he does, you already recognise that such a thing would be abusive and wrong. So either way, whatever he thinks or says is simply what he thinks or says. It isn't necessarily "true" or "right."

And yes, my relationship with that particular therapist that I told you the story about is a very VERY big part of my muddle. Being able to draw on that muddle to perhaps help you in a tinsy tiny way tonight also helps me in that it gives a sense of purpose and meaning to what is a pretty big muddle in my world.

Goodnight @Former-Member.

Re: Is mental illness real?

The thing is @Phoenix_Rising....
I'm a bad person. To the core. I was born that way. I should be dead. If you knew the truth you would know this. I'm not human, I don't have a soul. I'm not real.
He would say it, if he was finally seeing the truth. But he is blinded, like most people.
You on the other hand, are a person. By that very fact you deserve to be alive.
I'm not sure if this makes sense, but it's true.
G'night PR I hope you have a good rest.

My therapist replied very early this morning.
I feel somewhat better having received his reply.
I'm not sure what to do now.
