Is mental illness real?

Is mental illness real?

I'm starting to think not.

I think I'm just a useless failure of a human being and I have troub;e coping with this fact. It's not a real thing,I see this in the way most psychiatrists treat you like less than human. I'm not human. It's all just a joke.

And even with all this 'treatment' I'll always be me, a complete failure of a human being. It can't change who I am. So what's the point?

The problem is that if I cancel my psychiatrist appointment and don't get my blood tests done regularly they'll know. I don't know what to do. I could go to the appointments and lie, but how do I fake the blood tests? Can I just opt out? Tell them I'm done? Do they care? What's the point of all this?

Kitten photos might help make me feel better.

@Former-Member great to hear that your therapist replied! Was the reply helpful?

Your kitty looks so snuggly! Going to post something for you later (if you get a random tag from me this is why).

How are you feeling this afternoon?

Re: Is mental illness real?

Thanks @CheerBear, I'm feeling a little bit better. I may have wasted hours this afternoon sorting through photos of my kitten to make me feel better.

I'm not sure if the reply was helpful or not. I'm not sure I understand all of it;

"I will leave it to you, as to if and how you want to discuss the content of your emails, particularly as it relates to different aspects of yourself. Of course, I will welcome these discussions, but only if this is what you want."
I'm not sure I fully understand the subtext of the above. It's the 'particularly as it relates to different aspects of yourself' bit I don't really understand.

But I mentioned that I didn't know if I wanted to talk to him about what I'd written, so it's a big relief to know that I will be the one to bring it up, when and if I am ever ready to do so.

I guess it just worries me that he agrees with what I think. It really worries me that he thinks it's true.

It does sound like he's leaving you in control of how and what and when you might talk about things with him @Former-Member, which is a really great thing I think, and it sounds like you think too. Feeling in control of the therapy process is really important to me.

It's hard to try and work out what someone might mean in written text, but it sounds to me as if the 'particualrly' part may mean that he understands the sensitivity surrounding what you're talking about, and respects that it may be really hard for you. I can definitely understand how tricky it can be to try and work out what someone like a therapist said when they said (whatever it may be)

I'm happy to hear you're feeling some relief either way though 🙂

And for what it's worth, I don't think time spent doing anything that gives you comfort is ever really wasted time (especially when it involves cat anything 😉 )

Re: Is mental illness real?

I just saw the second message @Former-Member. Without knowing the specifics, the email doesn't necessarily mean he agrees with all of what you may have said about yourself (I'm thinking of what you were talking about last night), but perhaps that he agrees it's important to discuss if you think it is?

I hear you. I'm screaming with you as is everyone in this thread.

Re: Is mental illness real?

Centrelink won't let me drop subjects this semester cause I'm not sick enough. So if I don't pass everything this semester (which is pretty much a surety) I will have failures on my record and I won't be able to do a dissertation. And therefore will be ineligible for research positions and a phd.
DUCK YOU CENTRELINK YOU JUST FUCKED ME LIFE OVER.
There is literally no point in continuing now. Literally none.

Re: Is mental illness real?

I'm so sorry @Former-Member. The stress and pressure from c-link is enough to tip anyone over 😞

You might have already tried it, but can you speak with a c-link social worker? Is there student support at uni for you? I've had lots of trouble with c-link and study over the years, probably similar to you, but sometimes there's a way.

That would be shattering and so much pressure that you really don't need right now. It just sucks so much 😞

Re: Is mental illness real?

Have you got supporting evidence from your psych letting them know of your history and how this will affect you in the future. Here with you @Former-Member. Sorry this happened. I would be asking for a reassessment. @Phoenix_Rising Might have some advice here too as i think she found a back door into Centrelink 😜
