anxiety

anxiety

I have big things happening over the next few weeks and they terrify me. I'm going to court to testify against my ex husband who was abusive. Its been two years since he was arrested and i just want this over iwth now but i have no idea how to get through this. Ive been feeling so anxious over the last week and its building up. I have a constant headache now and getting chest pains which i know is just the anxiety but still scares me. I am doing breathing exercises when ever i notice it getting out of control, i've been trying to do more exercise when i feel like i just want to curl up in a ball, and im doing the muscle relaxation strategy thing once a day (it was suggested i do it minimum of 2 a day, but can't until i put the kids to bed!!). all of these things help to relieve things from an 8/9 out of ten to maybe a five out of ten for a while, but the anxiety feels like its always there. i'm horrified at the thought of telling so many people the specifics of what happened, but more terrified at how they are going to question me to discredit me. There are a few things from my teenage years that i did that im so ashamed of that are going to be brought up and will probably sound terrible and theres a very low chance of him being convicted but i have to do this to try and keep my kids safe 😞

Has anyone else had a similar time that they've been terrified of something thats coming up, how did you cope, what did you do to cope?

Re: anxiety

thank you everyone. I did have a bottle of champagne ready to celebrate when i'd finished my part, but i couldnt make myself open it, it really doesnt feel like something i can celebrate. Everything good in my life was twisted into something horrible and make me question who i am. im feeling so low. Its like he's just found another way to continue hurting me, and alot of the stuff they used was directed at my parenting ability (irrelevant to the case and wrong anyway) and even whether or not i love my youngest child. the defence lawyers words are going around my head over and over. and i knew there was not much chance of 'winning' but now the thought that he'l be acquitted just makes me sick and feel like hes going towin again. and how hard the next family court trial is going to be.

its not fair, right now, today, i would never tell anyone to go through the courts for domestic violence or sexual assault cases.

dearest @Former-Member

I hope one day you will feel @Mazarita s message....maybe when you get on with life....you may see that you hung onto your own beliefs no matter what. You know, what some men say, how they act....in fact also some women.....if they don't get their own way ......they scream and shriek...dont let that dissuade you You can sit with what you know is true.

Re: anxiety

Hi @Former-Member,

I am sorry you are hurting so much at the moment i know how difficult it must be for you. when my father went to jail for 6 moths for an accident the prossicuter made him out to be a monster whom ran the man down, i was in the car at the time it happened (an elderly man walked across the road when the crossing lights where red) anyway what i am trying to say is that is their job, to make you out to be someone you are not.

the legal system is horrible in Australia the good people are perssicuted and the bad people are getting let off, it's just not right. i was called 3 times to dury duty and all 3 i told them about my dad's wrongful arrest and being aqquited and the horrible treatment he recieved, and that if they ever force me to do it i would find the person not guilty from my past experiances.

@Former-Memberhang in their, it is almost over and you should be able to close that chapter of your life and move on.

My thoughts are with you, and i am sure every one on this forum too.

Take care

Jacques

@hiddenite took the words right out of my mouth - you are one courageous and brave woman.

I second what @Jacques said - It's their job to make you out into someone you're not. It's not a true reflection of you are.

We are all thinking of you!

Re: anxiety

Thank you @Jacques and @PeppiPatty and everyone,

its just that because we have children (whom i love so much and so much want to make sure that they are always safe unlike what the defence said 😞 ) it feels like this will just get worse now in the family court because if he's acquitted he'll be presumed to be innocent and i may not even be allowed to mention again what he's done to me and what he is really like. he has money and family and no 'skeletons' in his closet were allowed to be exposed (the detective told me he has his own skeletons but im not even allowed to know what those are because i'm only the complainant and it's the states case not mine) in the trial because of the 'irrelevant' nature of what ever they are.. but... they were allowed to dig up anything and everything on me and stupid things from my teen years and my family background and past abuse history etc. I'm so scared he's going to be able to get custody of the children (someone today told me that that was really very unlikely... but....) but here I am cant even get legal aid because of the house that's loan is in both our names that he lives in and wont sell and keep dragging out all court stuff. so i now have to represent myself in all family court stuff if my application to legal continues to be turned down. what hope do i have? feeling so overwhelmed.

Re: anxiety

So much to take in and so much to contemplate at the moment - I can completely see why you're feeling overwhelmed.

Have you got any mindfulness/calming/meditation exercises you can do right now?

Most of the things you listed there are based on outcomes, which haven't played out yet.

We can cause ourselves so much anxiety by getting ahead of ourselves.

You have done such a wonderful job at getting through the court case and being questioned. Now is the time to be kind to yourself, practice some self care and be proud of yourself.

Re: anxiety

Dear @Former-Member

i know how unfair everything is especially the legal sytem, but you need to hang in their, you have done well representing yourself, you should be proud that no matter what you stood up for your self and your children. no judge or lawyer can ever take that away from you.

Try not to focus on what might happen re: the children, i know that judges faviour them staying with their mother. try to get some rest you have had a huge week.

Take Care
