Grief & loss - may be triggering

Grief & loss - may be triggering

@ lapses
Early last year 2016 my Dad died after a long painful illness (cancer), which he had been fighting for 6 years.

He survived that long only because of continuous treatments, otherwise he would have been gone in 6 months (they said).

My relationship with him had been somewhat distant at times - due my living in a different state from my entire family for the past 22 years.

Also due to my tumultuous upbringing & family background - which is why I could not stay in the city where I grew up, & chose to live here (3000 kilometres away) instead.

Also wanting to start anew 22 years ago, with needs for greater independence.

Yet those hopes to start a family of my own have never been realized. My marriage ended abruptly, & took my cherished plans & hopes for the future with it.

Then I was confronted with the memories of my SA only 3 months after the end of my marriage - which again turned my life upside-down. My gender identity was shaken, & I no longer felt secure with the sense of identity that I once had.

Followed by a severe health emergency - with 2 emergency bowel surgeries, a stoma & bag for 6 months.

Then a 3rd major bowel surgery to try to put things back together. I almost died twice in hospital they told me.

My siblings & I had found Dad to be emotionally distant & scary right into our adult lives - yet in the last few years we found him to be a kind, intelligent & very caring man. So it was so much harder to lose him.

Due to the stress of having to find a new job, having complex PTSD, & not coping well with the conditions of this occupation (carer) - I've been unable to effectively come to terms with my grief & loss.

It seems that my grief has been largely on hold for the past 14 months since Dad died. I don't feel in touch with it, despite my best efforts to.

I see a psychologist, yet we've been unable to do grief work, or help me to come to terms with the loss of my Dad.

I've remembered very little about him in the past year, which makes it harder - as I have so few memories to draw upon.

Re: Grief & loss - may be triggering

@Former-Member, I actually had a rough day yesterday and one of those lines kept popping up, from The Lord of the Rings

“I know. It’s all wrong. By rights we shouldn’t even be here. But we are. It's like in the great stories, Mr. Frodo. The ones that really mattered. Full of darkness and danger they were. And sometimes you didn't want to know the end. Because how could the end be happy? How could the world go back to the way it was when so much bad had happened? But in the end, it’s only a passing thing, this shadow. Even darkness must pass. A new day will come. And when the sun shines it will shine out the clearer. Those were the stories that stayed with you. That meant something, even if you were too small to understand why.

Re: Grief & loss - may be triggering

Thanks @Former-Member

I love the group hug picture, I was thinking that I so need hugs (this morning).

Sorry, I've been rather shut-down & badly dissociated (CPTSD symptoms) - ever since I got back from the yoga retreat (last Monday evening).

It's been a constant struggle, as dissociation (feeling doped & numb) shuts down my ability to express myself, & makes it very difficult to engage with things (or people).

Sadly that feeling so incapacitated (for the past week) has lost me what remaining opportunities I did have - to do things, or go places in the time I had (whilst still on leave).

Now my holiday leave has finished, I return to work tomorrow (Monday). So increasing anxiety, & regret, at not having done trips or been places, in the time that I had (past week).

I went straight back into stress-mode, as soon as I had to contact work & chase them up to get my work schedule (for Monday). They never send our work schedule out in advance, then they change it (every day).

I've been checking in & reading posts every day, but I never seemed able to write any replies to anyone.

I feel like a mess a the moment (I know that's just a feeling or self-judgement).

The flower picture is lovely, @Former-Member

Yeah @Adge, how good it would be if you could just retire and live off a lotto win or something ☺ me too. A N nth might not seem enought but so glad you did it. Understand the feeling stressed hung going hack - they sound too disorganised to get themselves out of a paper bag, dont envy you at all. Always keep a large piece of yourself that they can't touch.
This dissociative numbness sounds hard, could it have beenbthe yoga retreat opened a few wounds needing exposure and healing? Try to process what comes to mind gently. Might need to dedicate 10min focused relaxation time breaths ng to deal with what's wanting out. Acknowledge and treat your pain as you would comforting a close friend. A cuddle would be nice now and then, some churches give them away free sometimes lol I miss being touched. I think you out need to book in a good massage as a reward for going back to work.
Ooo ooo, gotta go, got a visitor, stay stay strong bye 💜💕

Re: Grief & loss - may be triggering

Hi @Former-Member Thanks.

Yes I need to remember that my going on those bus tour trips was a first, I had never done even one of those before - & it got me out briefly to some of my favourite (lovely) places down south, without driving there myself.

The yoga retreat was a first too. My first ever yoga retreat, & my first retreat of any sort in 22 years...

You made me laugh, because you reminded me of the old saying "they can't fight their way out of a wet paper bag" - & "they can't even organise a p...ss...up (to get drunk) at a brewery"...

Yes I think the yoga retreat did trigger thoughts of many past experiences. Having had a strong religious background, I could relate very much to the spiritual aspect, but in a different way.

I completed most of a degree in Theology, then converted it to a BA in Social Science & Education Studies (Major in Philosophy) - That's before I did my post-Graduate Diploma in Environmental Management (Science).

I have complex PTSD, I struggle regularly with dissociation - it worsens or lasts longer when repeatedly triggered by things (experiences).

Yes, cuddles, massage helps - I had one yesterday, & felt energetic & alive (for a few hours) afterwards, for the first time in weeks..

Re: Grief & loss - may be triggering

Good on ya @Adge, we'll help u get on track again. As @Appleblossom would say "Gently Bentley" Yeah, "a WET paper bag" that's what I meant 😕 (my brain, my bad too - alp those typos sorry - glad ya worked it out lol). Love to pick your brains with such a repigious background converted to a 'real' meal ticket of Social Sciences - very cool! Best of both world's. Hope you don't ever give up the faith though, we are so privlidged (?spell) to have the bonus of spiritual awareness, strength, faith and hope. Its subtle but enduring.

You are expressing yourself very well here tonight. Do u really have to work tomorrow? Qld has public holiday here - Queen's birthday.

Wind down slowly tonight @Adge, plan a good nights sleep, whatever it takes.

I couldn't sleep all b ght last night, this high dose of cortisone for the asthma is messing with hyperdrive - the pharmacist warned me - but even taking bit early AM still did it, hut at least I'm coughing less. Think of you a lot with it cause you were so sick for so longvwith your respiratory virus. On my second run of antibiotics now.

Really really wish you all the best for your first week back to the grindstone. Gently Bently.

Well have to stop meeting like this, my fear of intimacy has spiked tonight. How weird is that being anonymous! Yep I is officially messed up lol (hangbin, probably the high I'm on with all this asthma treatment adrenalin - phew! It will pass lol

Good night 💜🐦💜🐦💜

Oh, have to find m bird book bit my female bourke gas lost all the feathers on her chest bone area, looks uncomfe - what is it? - what can I do?

I'll shut up now lol, night 🐦

Re: Grief & loss - may be triggering

Hi @Former-Member I was just reading your grounding technique thread. Lots of good ideas.

@Adge Good Luck back at work.

I think that was good advice not to give them too much of yourself. Maybe imagine the interior castle protecting your vulnerable wounded self so you can get on with the job. Not suppress that self but PROTECT.

Over time you may know how it has helped you.

I sometimes just read the forums too, but feel bad if nobody answers a post.

Re: Grief & loss - may be triggering

@Former-MemberI was able to express myself (write), mainly because you asked me specific questions, & prompted me to think about things - that helps to focus my mind, even though it's a struggle to type (express) it at first.

Maybe it's "grounding", or maybe it's renewing my "sense of connection" with people (on here).

Yes always spiritual, although I haven't been to church regularly in a long time.

No public holiday for us tomorrow, we had one last Monday - we have Queen's Birthday on a different date (June).

Gee I wish cortisone sent me hyper (drive), although it is horrible to not be able to sleep. It doesn't seem to do that for me. I'm super susceptible to any drowsy-causing antihistamines, etc (I can't take them).

I have to take stimulant medication for my sleep apnea, which doesn't make me bounce off the walls or anything (unfortunately) - it just helps me to feel a bit more functional.

I hope your asthma & coughing eases & gets better soon. Your bout of illness must have been a long one too.

I've been wheezing & phlegmy again over the past 2 days, I don't know why.

Your female Bourke parrot could be plucking her own chest feathers out - or the male may be plucking her feathers out.

That's the most common cause (reason). It's a bird habit (psychological), not an illness or disease - that's if it is due to feather-plucking.

It's hard to stop (if it is that), because they keep on doing it. More cage space, or toys & things to chew (for fun) may help to distract them from doing it.
