Grief & loss - may be triggering

Grief & loss - may be triggering

@ lapses
Early last year 2016 my Dad died after a long painful illness (cancer), which he had been fighting for 6 years.

He survived that long only because of continuous treatments, otherwise he would have been gone in 6 months (they said).

My relationship with him had been somewhat distant at times - due my living in a different state from my entire family for the past 22 years.

Also due to my tumultuous upbringing & family background - which is why I could not stay in the city where I grew up, & chose to live here (3000 kilometres away) instead.

Also wanting to start anew 22 years ago, with needs for greater independence.

Yet those hopes to start a family of my own have never been realized. My marriage ended abruptly, & took my cherished plans & hopes for the future with it.

Then I was confronted with the memories of my SA only 3 months after the end of my marriage - which again turned my life upside-down. My gender identity was shaken, & I no longer felt secure with the sense of identity that I once had.

Followed by a severe health emergency - with 2 emergency bowel surgeries, a stoma & bag for 6 months.

Then a 3rd major bowel surgery to try to put things back together. I almost died twice in hospital they told me.

My siblings & I had found Dad to be emotionally distant & scary right into our adult lives - yet in the last few years we found him to be a kind, intelligent & very caring man. So it was so much harder to lose him.

Due to the stress of having to find a new job, having complex PTSD, & not coping well with the conditions of this occupation (carer) - I've been unable to effectively come to terms with my grief & loss.

It seems that my grief has been largely on hold for the past 14 months since Dad died. I don't feel in touch with it, despite my best efforts to.

I see a psychologist, yet we've been unable to do grief work, or help me to come to terms with the loss of my Dad.

I've remembered very little about him in the past year, which makes it harder - as I have so few memories to draw upon.

Thanks @Former-Member

My brother said that it's a s..tt...y thing to have to choose, & that nobody wants to be put in that position.

That's exactly right. It's so stressful for me, & for Minx puss.

As for having a plan to have someone with me so that I'm not alone (a good idea) - I have no one to call on for that at the moment, I can't really get around that obstacle.

Yes I will give Minx puss cuddles from you, & from anyone else who wants to.

Re: Grief & loss - may be triggering

Know what ya mean not having anyone to call on. After leaving my dog with the vet that last day, crying, I sat in the local cafe an hour sipping coffee & watching the people, alone but not. I brang his color home and got busy cleaning to burn up some energy. And came online here. I knw you'll cope. Such is life. Some days are stone 😞

Thinking of you and minx
Have you read rainbow bridge? Helped me when I went through same 18mths ago. Still grieving at random times. That is how grief hits me randomly as time goes on..I now accept it for what it is...sending you calm thoughts

Thanks @Former-Member

Thanks @Former-Member

The vet put Minx puss down about 30 minutes ago.

He didn't offer to do anything with her, although gave me a brochure for a pet cremation place.

I'm still in shock, I don't know what to do with her. I buried Megsie in 20011, but I don't have the heart to bury Minx puss.

So sorry @Adge, You did the right thing. Shame the vet couldnt take care of the body for you like my Vet, for a fee. Dontnput itboff, wrap kitty in a beautiful blanket or towel, or recycle bagvor pillow case, dig a hole and place her in. Put flowers on top, maybe even plant a rosebush. You can do this 🌷🌿

Re: Grief & loss - may be triggering

Thanks @Former-Member Those are good ideas. I will try sometime soon.

Minx puss often came up the driveway to greet me, when I came home & drove in. I got Megsie soon after moving into this house, then I got Minx puss 1 year later.

She & Megsie (gone since 2011) both used to do that - they even ran along the footpath in front of my house (to greet me), as I drove along the street.

There's no-one left to greet me now.

I haven't heard of the Rainbow Bridge book @Former-Member I shall have to look it up.

I'm still in shock 6 hours later. I've been crying quite a bit, which is very rare for me.

I usually can't seem to cry, even when it's very sad. I've only been able to cry about 6 times in more than 20 years...

Thanks.

Cry it out @Adge, take all the time you need, its probably pulling past grief into play with it, crying is draining but healthy. Take a headache pill going to bed and you'll sleep well. Its all so sad. O miss my dog getting so excited when I came home - so quiet now. Sometimes the birds greet me but not always. Could you get a bird for the house? Or even another cat? Or pup? Something to process later when I out feel better. Do you have a yoga weekend? Hope that goes well. Nice ppl. Be kind to yourself Adge, early days, it will pass.

Re: Grief & loss - may be triggering

Yes my yoga retreat starts this Friday afternoon, until Monday afternoon.

It will be way out of my comfort zone, but I'm looking forward to it.

The yoga retreat place has a funny name, named after the Kookaburra bird.

It's fine, everyone's caring responses were helpful. Thanks.
