Grief & loss - may be triggering

Grief & loss - may be triggering

@ lapses
Early last year 2016 my Dad died after a long painful illness (cancer), which he had been fighting for 6 years.

He survived that long only because of continuous treatments, otherwise he would have been gone in 6 months (they said).

My relationship with him had been somewhat distant at times - due my living in a different state from my entire family for the past 22 years.

Also due to my tumultuous upbringing & family background - which is why I could not stay in the city where I grew up, & chose to live here (3000 kilometres away) instead.

Also wanting to start anew 22 years ago, with needs for greater independence.

Yet those hopes to start a family of my own have never been realized. My marriage ended abruptly, & took my cherished plans & hopes for the future with it.

Then I was confronted with the memories of my SA only 3 months after the end of my marriage - which again turned my life upside-down. My gender identity was shaken, & I no longer felt secure with the sense of identity that I once had.

Followed by a severe health emergency - with 2 emergency bowel surgeries, a stoma & bag for 6 months.

Then a 3rd major bowel surgery to try to put things back together. I almost died twice in hospital they told me.

My siblings & I had found Dad to be emotionally distant & scary right into our adult lives - yet in the last few years we found him to be a kind, intelligent & very caring man. So it was so much harder to lose him.

Due to the stress of having to find a new job, having complex PTSD, & not coping well with the conditions of this occupation (carer) - I've been unable to effectively come to terms with my grief & loss.

It seems that my grief has been largely on hold for the past 14 months since Dad died. I don't feel in touch with it, despite my best efforts to.

I see a psychologist, yet we've been unable to do grief work, or help me to come to terms with the loss of my Dad.

I've remembered very little about him in the past year, which makes it harder - as I have so few memories to draw upon.

Re: Grief & loss - may be triggering

Hi Mohill, how are you going? Think of you lots 💜 And where's @Dec got to as well? 💜💕

@Adge, I'm sorry to hear about Minxy cat, and that you're health is still not on track. Try work on boosting your immune system. Its a nadty flu season, and check your environment for mould spours and other lung irritants. I have a head cold, painful sinuses today, bit of asthma. Don't wanna get as sick as you so resting today. Try book in different doctors 'till you find one you click best with. Not sure if you have many options. Maybecjust check if that locum works anywhere else.

I'm so proud of you pushing through sickness to travel and do something different. And something to remember and honour your dad as well. Very brave! The cave memory must have been so real for you, surfaced some/unwanted acceptance no doubt - , I so get that pain... . "Grief is to live in two worlds" 😞 but you did good my friend. Glad you self cared and got the bus too - well done!👍💕 i can see why you thought to go back to Margaret River - I googled it and it's just beautiful there. Hope you dont mnd my posting a couple of images for you ☺ 💜💕

🐦 Oh Adge, nearly forgot to tell you I found a bird egg in my bird cage seed bowl 😞 Maybe the bourk's cause they dont have a nesting box. It was cold but I put it in the finch nest because they're always in there - is that ok? ifvit survives?

Re: Grief & loss - may be triggering

Hi @Former-Member

Yes I'm spiritual, it's just that I find it hard to be in touch with that side of things. I used to be religious, but lost that sense of connection (re church) to some extent.

I guess you could say that I find spending time in nature (which I don't do enough) a spiritual experience.

Some sense of connection & special meaning. Especially caves & natural bushland, etc.

I haven't collected anything from the trip, maybe I should (or could) have. I have a small collection of coloured dragon figures at home - I love dragons, magical & protective (& they fly of course).

I have a few coloured rocks, some of which Dad sent me years ago.

Thanks, I'll have to think more about what you said.

I was utterly exhausted today, probably from the long day yesterday & getting to bed after 11pm. I don't manage late nights well.

Then perhaps I overdid it, because I pushed myself hard to book more trips. I didn't want to continue to feel stuck at home on my own, & need to see things (with other people).

I probably should have left it all until some other time, I need to rest.

Re: Grief & loss - may be triggering

@Former-MemberThose are lovely photos, of exactly where I went (& what I saw), pretty much. I couldn't have taken photos that nice myself.

I'm taking antihistamines (they don't do much) & probiotics. I've been taking probiotics for several years, because of disfunctional bowels, since my major bowel surgeries.

Lung irritants, yes there must be mould or something hiding in the house, because my sinuses & breathing difficulties seem to get worse the longer I stay inside.

I've been trying hard to air the house, with the doors open several hours (over the past few days).

I'm sorry to hear about your asthma & sinuses, I hope it eases or gets better soon.

I've given up on the Dr for the moment, since he gave me the brush-off again last Sunday.

I'll probably have to see some Dr again soon, as things aren't better - but there is virtually no time-frame to do that in now (until mid-next week).

Because I have psychologist appointment tomorrow, a long all- day trip on Friday, & a 2 day trip from early Monday morning till very late Tuesday night (next week).

I felt slightly better during the day today, then I've been virtually at collapsing point for the past few hours - because I probably over did it with pushing myself to book those trips (stress?).

Sorry, I need to sign off & go to bed, & can barely type.

That was a good idea to put the egg in with the finches @lapses. They may sit on it, although if the egg has already chilled (from not being sat on) or if it's not fertile, then no bird will hatch out.

You can tell from the size of the egg which bird it probably came from, zebra finch eggs are tiny. Sooner or later I'm sure that you will have some baby birds hatch, they're so cute.

Thanks.

Re: Grief & loss - may be triggering

Hi @Shaz51 Thanks. It's good to see you too.

I'm still battling illness, although not as bad as it was (after almost 3 weeks).

I gave up on the G.P a week ago, for the time being because he would give me no treatment - despite the fact that my symptoms are still severe.

My courses of antibiotics & diagnosis of Bronchitis & Tonsilitis came from the locum Dr service, which only operates at night. I saw Drs 5 times in 2 weeks.

Eventually I shall have to find or try another Dr. In the meantime I've been doing my best to look after myself, to get better etc.

I've been on 2 long day Bus Tour trips (14 hours each), because I really needed to get away despite still feeling ill - & I certainly wasn't up to doing that driving (700km each day) myself.

Plus having the company of all those tourists from NSW, Qld, & Vic was great, as I would not have gone on a trip by myself. I was the only Perth person (local) on the Bus, apart from the driver.

Tuesday was Margaret River & Busselton, yesterday (Friday) was Wave Rock out at Hyden.

Those 2 long trips seem to have put a lot of strain on my body, although I'm still glad that I went. I've needed a lot of time to recover my energy (2 days), between each trip.

On Monday (the day after tomorrow) I am going on a 2 day trip to Albany & the Tree Top Walk.

That may be over-doing it, but I need to go - I haven't been down there (or to Margaret River & Busselton, before Tuesday) in more than 10 years.

The last person who I travelled down south with was my Dad, when he was alive.

I've been trying to read people's posts on many threads, to keep up with how people are going - I just haven't had any energy to write.much.

I did manage to post forum replies a few times when I was on the bus (using my phone), which was nice to keep in touch - but there often isn't any (phone) reception to be able to do that.

Maybe when if I sell the house I can. You take care 🙂

Re: Grief & loss - may be triggering

Thanks @Former-Member I know you've had a lot going on, & a lot of changes & decisions.

I've been checking in daily on many threads, although the number of posts (replies) on some threads (topics) is quite overwhelming.

I hope you get to keep your new birdies & anything else that's important to you, no matter what happens.

It would be lovely to have someone I know on the trips with me. There hasn't been, although I've met some really nice people & have had some good conversations (so far).

I had never ever done a bus tour trip before I did the one to Margaret River (last Tuesday).

I've found it quite overwhelming to book or go on any of these trips - which means that I may have been dissociated a lot of the time, & therefore may not remember many details of each trip.

I hope that is not the case, but it has been (or seems to have been) so far.

I did a lot of travels by road around Australia over 20 years ago (mostly with my parents). I've not travelled virtually at all since I moved to WA, & certainly not within the last 10 to 15 years.

I've waited to have someone to travel with, but there wasn't anyone. Dad wanted to travel across the Nullabor with me, unfortunately he wasn't alive long enough & we never did it.

Re: Grief & loss - may be triggering

Sleep tight tonight @Adge, you've been under a lot of ongoing stressors so to make the most of your break i would suggest two things to help
- grounding mindfulness exercises and
- keep a journal
Stay safe and at peace forum brother 💜🐦💜🐦💜🐦💜

Re: Grief & loss - may be triggering

Yes journal writing @Former-Member An excellent help! It usually helps a lot.

I usually journal write every day, except over the past week when I've been too tired & unwell to think or write much.

I've still got a long way to go with practicing this mindfulness thing.

My psychologist thinks that I know very well how to practice (do) mindfulness - in fact I don't.

Despite reading heaps about it over the years, & even having done an 8 week Mindfulness course (with lots of practical exercises in it).

Thanks, yes I need to journal write & do some Minfulness exercises...
