Grief & loss - may be triggering

Grief & loss - may be triggering

@ lapses
Early last year 2016 my Dad died after a long painful illness (cancer), which he had been fighting for 6 years.

He survived that long only because of continuous treatments, otherwise he would have been gone in 6 months (they said).

My relationship with him had been somewhat distant at times - due my living in a different state from my entire family for the past 22 years.

Also due to my tumultuous upbringing & family background - which is why I could not stay in the city where I grew up, & chose to live here (3000 kilometres away) instead.

Also wanting to start anew 22 years ago, with needs for greater independence.

Yet those hopes to start a family of my own have never been realized. My marriage ended abruptly, & took my cherished plans & hopes for the future with it.

Then I was confronted with the memories of my SA only 3 months after the end of my marriage - which again turned my life upside-down. My gender identity was shaken, & I no longer felt secure with the sense of identity that I once had.

Followed by a severe health emergency - with 2 emergency bowel surgeries, a stoma & bag for 6 months.

Then a 3rd major bowel surgery to try to put things back together. I almost died twice in hospital they told me.

My siblings & I had found Dad to be emotionally distant & scary right into our adult lives - yet in the last few years we found him to be a kind, intelligent & very caring man. So it was so much harder to lose him.

Due to the stress of having to find a new job, having complex PTSD, & not coping well with the conditions of this occupation (carer) - I've been unable to effectively come to terms with my grief & loss.

It seems that my grief has been largely on hold for the past 14 months since Dad died. I don't feel in touch with it, despite my best efforts to.

I see a psychologist, yet we've been unable to do grief work, or help me to come to terms with the loss of my Dad.

I've remembered very little about him in the past year, which makes it harder - as I have so few memories to draw upon.

hello @Former-Member

for the moment this is about you

adge will not think that you are clogging up his thread he will be more concerned for you

dont try to make sense of your grief, sorrow, pain, tears....it is all a part of you needing to just be acknowledged and allowed to flow when you are in a safe place.

you have not let anyone down so that is enough of that. delete that thought..gone

you will be letting yourself down though if you dont slow down ....so from all of us here who care, time for lapses to rest and be at one with herself xxxx

@Former-Member - I'm glad to hear you will be safe! Loss can be incredibly difficult and heart-wrenching. It is understandable if you are feeling a little teary and mixed up. It is so lovely that you lit a candle and put on incense in her memory - I'm sure she is watching down on you, with a heart full of love! Yes, sometimes rest may help - I hope it does in this case for you. I'm glad my reply means a lot to you - that means a lot to me.

Kindest,

Amour_Et_Psyché

Hi @Former-Member It's good to see you.

I can understand that it would be hard for you to think of going to that same chapel @Former-Member - that sounds really hard. I'm thinking of you.

I haven't yet been back to Sydney to see my Dad's grave, since I was there for his funeral (16 months ago) - it was so hard to go into the funeral parlour to see him before the funeral, I felt I needed to.

Thanks @Former-Member Yes I need to take a better break, & ground myself better, before driving off (when overwhelmed) next time.

@OwlunarYes these professional do seem to sit around thinking up fancy labels for things. Then they seem to expect people to automatically know what the label means...

I like to describe things in much simpler ways that are easier to understand - eg organising myself to do things, or "just doing stuff". That's basically what this Behavioural Activation means anyway, I think.

I don't know why something as simple as sending a sympathy card seems so hard & overwhelming. Anyway I did it, thanks.

I like your new avatar picture @Former-Member It looks lovely.

- you know, her funeral notice said "fought the good race and won" - hows that for faith❗ Don't wanta talk about. Or tawnz anymore. Thanks for caring xox

hello @Former-Member @Adge @Owlunar @Appleblossom @Former-Member

thank you for getting back to us and letting us know that you are managing.

Great resilience, making it to your volunteering work. Is it an op shop? I was meant to go to my first mature dance lesson, starting at 10am, an hours drive..I awoke the first time at 6.00am after having a nightmare..pulled the covers over my head..awoke again at 9.00am..dancing was just not going to happen so yes had to cancel first class? Avoidance!!

customers..walking angels..they probably are..recycled shop??

hmm @Former-Member my humour is lacking..can you offer anything better

@lapses would you like to strike up a new conversation about your work... what you enjoy.,.. what makes you laugh...we can all do with that

welcome to join in anyone

Re: Grief & loss - may be triggering

Hi @Former-Member, back is annoying but home today so can rest when it gets too much. Not sure about work conversation, not on grief thread, maybe resurrect another oldie, don't know. Whe do you ask if volunteer or paid? Don't see the point in distinguishing between the two workers - one is unfairly stigmatised, invalidated - yet both work - sometimes more!!! As it is, I do a bit of both, dont have to, need to, but can't disclose re ananimity risk, and its part time combined. What do you do? Its easier to motivate myself when someone depends on me. But some days its really hard andvi cry, but remember I cry from loneliness... when I don't work, so... not easy to figure which pain is better 🙂
I've learned somehow, probably just practise, to not be so social phobic... Might try new discussion thread.
Today is drawer day, getting these drawers functional. Are you ok'ish ?
💜💕

Re: Grief & loss - may be triggering

@Former-Membermy question was "are you working in an op shop"

I have no grandiose opinions about working for money as opposed to volunteering

I have done volunteer work myself up until I became very unwell

I will certainly be returning to some sort of voluntary work once I feel that I am well enough

I hope that you find some more rest and that your pain physical and mental begins to ease a little

Re: Grief & loss - may be triggering

I know @Former-Member, thanks, my paid work is only casual on call (fill in), the op shop is twice a week - it keeps me active. and eases isolation / loneliness. I hope you are well enough to do it again soon.

@Adge, you're quiet, are you OK?
