Not coping with life - may trigger

Not coping with life - may trigger

I've noticed my mood and outlook on life lately dip a bit (I've largely hidden it from everyone though). Today I just woke up and wished I wasn't here anymore. I went to therapy and cried my eyes out openly, something I don't normally do. Tonight I am getting by with having a couple of stiff drinks (don't worry I never have more than a couple, I learned my lesson a few years ago with regards to drinking too much. I just feel so confused. It is hard to put a finger on why (I guess there's lots of reasons really).

I am losing sight of ever living my dream... Having a great job in the field of mental health, having my own home and a loving family to support me. Just typing those words made me realise how impossible that dream is. Instead I am just a lowly pensioner who keeps having breakdown after breakdown and letting life pass me by. I just don't know what I am supposed to do anymore! It is just so frustrating! I am so angry at myself to let all I had in my previous life (before MI) slip through my fingers.

I just am not coping with anything at the moment. I pretend to be 'happy' in order to try and feel happy (that old fake it til you make it adage). I am just super stressed out. I am supposed to have the best day in my life coming up in a few months, but to be honest I couldn't give a rats about it deep down. Yes, I love my gf and yes I want to spend the rest of my life with her, but it all just seems too hard. I just want to go to bed and hide (or worse).

Sorry this is such a ramble, I don't mean it to be. I've had racing thoughts all day. I tried doing a mindfulness meditation but couldn't for longer than a minute without opening my eyes and being distracted. I guess what triggered me the most was my lack of a relationship with my father. When I was a little girl, he used to love my company and would spend many hours reading to me and spending time with me. Now he seems allergic to my presence. I rarely hear from him and only see twice per year (if that). He is the only family I have, but he is only seemingly interested in his new family (my stepmother and her child and grandkids). He even said to me he wished I was never born to my face. That remark still stings today, years after he said it. It just breaks my heart.

I guess I should stop rambling and hit 'post' before my life story becomes too recognisable and people who are on this forum that I know in RL might recognise me.

Cest le vie.

Re: Not coping with life - may trigger

Hello folks and thank you for all your kind replies.

I went to a hearing voices group today and realised I have an awful long way to go to be considered "recovered".

I feel like a complete loser and failure in life. In short I've let myself down in a very big way!

You're right though @Kurra, I should do something which makes ME happy and satisfies my own needs. I am trying to work towards that. My Dad wanted me to be a scientist or something academic, although my heart is not in that field. I want to help people, work with the most fragile and most vulnerable people, mainly because I know what it is like to just want to not be here anymore (by and large I still wish I wasn't).

I feel like such a charlatan, like I am mentally ill because I made myself this way. In my teenage years it was cool to be depressed, however I was never 'cool'... just emo. I therefore don't deserve support and certainly don't deserve pity. It was like my depression envolved into schizophrenia which evolved into into schizoaffective disorder. I feel like I was an actor playing a part, like my life wasn't 'real'. I still feel that way, only now, I don't know how to be 'normal and authentic'. I am so angry with myself that I feel full of self hatred. I hate me and always have (only now it isn't 'cool' anymore). I am just a burden on society and certainly a burden for my friends and family. I just wish I could erase myself and be reincarnated into something less complicated and messed up.

@Queenienobody deserves any form of mental illness. You are such a capable person but that doesn't mean you are a failure just because you haven't "conformed". You have great humour, you are so smart and you can do anything you damn well want to. 🙂 I know it, you just have to know it. I think you are fabulous.

@Queenie. I'm sorry you are feeling like that.
I wouldn't erase you. Although I'd erase your trauma if I could.
And while I have a magic wand - id make the medical and psych professionals know what the hell is happening in peoples heads and how to treat, cure and prevent. Sending you support and hugs.i

Re: Not coping with life - may trigger

@Queenie I hear where you're coming from. It can be so difficult to seek help sometimes because you don't feel like you deserve it. Ditto to the 'I am a failure' train of thought. However, you are in a great position to do what you want - help people. By living with your own demons and living well you can be a role model to those that need hope. You fall into at least two minority groups, and as such can advocate across those platforms. Just because you struggled in the past and are struggling now, doesn't mean you won't get through it. Life is fleeting and must be honoured.

The first step to working with fragile minds is to be a strong one. One that they can trust to commit to long term. If you seek to assist people with change, the key would be to survive to see that change occur. It could take a lifetime.

I really hope this won't affect you but during my psychosis I thought I was in a film where I made myself dress into various roles of family members, historical figures, and younger versions of myself to prove a point. Even after being released, medicated and recovering, I felt like I was a robot. Incapable of expression. What's weird for me is that I feel the one thing I have is character. It's so scary though because through my experience with bi-polar I've never been told much about schizophrenia and although I don't hear voices, sounds can really impact me. I also box characters I write about or create for audition roles in my mind as if I had a virtual filing cabinet. Not sure if it's healthy though.

A harsh reality check would be that you cannot be a strain on society because you to society at large is statistically insignificant. Second the reason why society functions is to take care of those who can't take care of themselves. If you wish to repay society it would be by admitting that you require rest and recuperation before trying your best by finding work. I also wrote personalised letters to everyone I terrified when I was unwell.

So what interests you about people? I personally find almost anything else more interesting. Why not create a fragile piece of art that shows your true vulnerability? Clay is a good medium.

I hope the support group helped.

Re: Not coping with life - may trigger

I don't believe the sort of feelings you're having @Queenie are particularly unusual. I too went through periods where I believed that I was just msking it all up - like playing a part/game as if I was an actor on a stage. The trouble was I didn't know how to get off the stage.

The authentic you is there and I suspect we see the real Queenie here most of the time. If you can, try to push these erroneous thoughts aside and start fighting for the Queenie that is inside you. Can you let her emerge and buff up her crown so that she can shine?

Can you let yourself believe in the innate you?

Holding you tight as you fight against these thoughts. Hugzzz 💕 💜 💕

Re: Not coping with life - may trigger

I am overwhelmed by everyone's responses, I truly am. I was in tears this morning reading them all.

I suspect I've lost who I really am and although I try to be myself and be 'authentic' here on the forum, I think I've got a long way to search who I am. I remember spending lenghty hours in my young adulthood trying to 'find myself'. I never did find 'myself' or a sense of self to be honest.

I do know I am creative and although, not very talented, I enjoy producing works of art, so yes, clay is a favourite medium of mine. Having said that, I haven't worked with clay in over 20 years (since I was in high school). Might be something to look into.

I am looking at studying because I become easily bored on the pension and idle time is not good for me. I have to keep reasonably busy. So I am thinking of studying Diploma of Community Services and use that as a gateway into University (I would be eligible for course credit of up to 1 year towards a Social Work degree). I just have to make sure I am studying for the right reasons, for me, not to simply make my father happy. That will be difficult to differentiate.

Last night I entertained some very dark thoughts indeed. I even begged for distraction from my gf (soon to be 'wife'). She seemed so happy and then I sensed I had let her down by having these thoughts. She immediately thinks I am not happy in the relationship if I am thinking of my own demise, which is dead wrong! I love her deeply. I just think she could do a lot better than me. Although she'd deny that and simply say that is my depression talking.

I am thinking of going into respite for a week after I return from our holiday/honeymoon in June. I need to learn when it is better for everyone if I am away for a few days at least, although again my gf would deny that.

Ah Sugar Honey Iced Tea! Just feel really crappy tonight.

Re: Not coping with life - may trigger

@Queenie the clay would be great. Sensory and meditative even if the end product looks like :pile_of_poo: who cares? You could use the feeling sense and watching the clay through your fingers, as a focus cue and just drift. Pity you didn't have your own wheel and clay to play with, that would be a great outlet. Ok I'm drifting myself now, sorry.

And yes to the study, if that is what you want I think the diploma and credit would be a fantastic idea and you said you want to work in that capacity, so I'm thinking that would be for you. Hope you can decide what's best.

Look after the corgis and keep Phillip in line - the house of House of Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg-Glücksburg... seriously? 👀

Re: Not coping with life - may trigger

@Queenie See, I knew you had it in you my dear! The study sounds like a wonderful idea. I hope you will soon learn to enjoy life again.

It is okay to feel lonely when you have loved ones around. It's okay to feel guilt. Just know that it will pass. I read an article linked here today about the reasons for loneliness, one of which was putting up a persona online. Not sure if that fits you but I hope this site isn't overwhelming you.

When tears are mentioned though, I'm very concerned about saying useless things that have then affected your mood. In real life, I've friends who are very strong and don't tend to show a lot of emotion but come to me in tears due to their depressive state. Would you have any advice on what you would want to receive in that scenario? I kinda just hug them awkwardly and stand by.

Re: Not coping with life - may trigger

@Glorianna please don't think you have affected my mood, I find all the forumites to be very supportive and kind (the kind of people I need to surround myself in reality to be honest).

I heard voices today calling my name and muttering foul language. It annoys and frustrates me. Lately they've been reasonably tolerable, but today in the local library amongst the hushed voices of people around me, I began to hear voices coming from the bookshelves. My response? I got out of there ASAP. I was followed home by them on the bus, plus the noises of loud clanging bells and gongs. All in all, it makes me very startled and hyper-vigilant.

It is difficult to concentrate and I feel I am struggling to verbalise what I need to say in order to get my point across. Maybe I am just tired? Maybe it's an early warning sign? I guess time will tell.
