Not coping with life - may trigger

Not coping with life - may trigger

I've noticed my mood and outlook on life lately dip a bit (I've largely hidden it from everyone though). Today I just woke up and wished I wasn't here anymore. I went to therapy and cried my eyes out openly, something I don't normally do. Tonight I am getting by with having a couple of stiff drinks (don't worry I never have more than a couple, I learned my lesson a few years ago with regards to drinking too much. I just feel so confused. It is hard to put a finger on why (I guess there's lots of reasons really).

I am losing sight of ever living my dream... Having a great job in the field of mental health, having my own home and a loving family to support me. Just typing those words made me realise how impossible that dream is. Instead I am just a lowly pensioner who keeps having breakdown after breakdown and letting life pass me by. I just don't know what I am supposed to do anymore! It is just so frustrating! I am so angry at myself to let all I had in my previous life (before MI) slip through my fingers.

I just am not coping with anything at the moment. I pretend to be 'happy' in order to try and feel happy (that old fake it til you make it adage). I am just super stressed out. I am supposed to have the best day in my life coming up in a few months, but to be honest I couldn't give a rats about it deep down. Yes, I love my gf and yes I want to spend the rest of my life with her, but it all just seems too hard. I just want to go to bed and hide (or worse).

Sorry this is such a ramble, I don't mean it to be. I've had racing thoughts all day. I tried doing a mindfulness meditation but couldn't for longer than a minute without opening my eyes and being distracted. I guess what triggered me the most was my lack of a relationship with my father. When I was a little girl, he used to love my company and would spend many hours reading to me and spending time with me. Now he seems allergic to my presence. I rarely hear from him and only see twice per year (if that). He is the only family I have, but he is only seemingly interested in his new family (my stepmother and her child and grandkids). He even said to me he wished I was never born to my face. That remark still stings today, years after he said it. It just breaks my heart.

I guess I should stop rambling and hit 'post' before my life story becomes too recognisable and people who are on this forum that I know in RL might recognise me.

Cest le vie.

Re: Not coping with life - may trigger

Hi @Queenie

I hear you and I have been in a not dissimilar situation. My MI completely destroyed a burgeoning career that had taken off in the international arena. It's a loss that I now accept for what it was but I doubt I'll ever completely get over loss. They say in the arts that it's better to be a has been rather than a might have been. I am a has been but it's cold comfort.

I went on to build a second career in a completely different field. This was made all the harder because I was experiencing many serious active schizoaffective (mostly bipolar based) episodes. I sort of blew that career too despite extraordinary success - MI again.

I built a third career in an associated stream to my second career but now I appear to be facing ageism in the workplace. Enough of me.

What I am saying is that it is possible to build your career in mental health. It's not necessarily going to be a bed of roses but it is doable if you stick your heels in.

As far as your Dad goes - it takes two to tango. He needs to be prepared to give as much to a relationship as you do. I'd park that one up for a while. In the meantime is it worth taking those first steps to achieving the career you want?

Re: Not coping with life - may trigger

Hey @Queenie, I'm sorry to hear the above. I'm here to listen if you want to talk. I truely believe that trying and not meeting a goal is important through the attempt itself. Your goals and aspirations sound like ones that are very difficult to achieve. Are you adding more stress to yourself by prentending to be happy around people? Have you acknowledged the cause of you sadness to your loved ones? It sounds like you have addressed the issue by seeking help.

Family, loved ones, people say things in anger. Let it go. You could write a list of heartbreaking quotes and then burn it.

Also, people live their lives, and I would focus on the people who love me rather than the ones who choose to give love to others. Dare I suggest in all giddiness a stroll in the park or some similar activity involving the outdoors? (Maybe the sunrise?)

Sorry if this is all nonsense.

Re: Not coping with life - may trigger

Hi @Queenie, I'm really sorry to hear how much you are struggling at the moment. Your story sounds similar to mine in many ways. I too am a lowly pensioner when all I want in the world is the career that I spent 12 years at uni working towards. My deepest grief is my lack of employment. I accept that the "friends and family" thing is never going to be a part of my world, but I truly thought I could create something worth living for in terms of a career. I still think I could do that, if only I could find the right support. Alas, even though my psychologist and I are both trying super hard to connect, the reality is we are very different people and I'm really not sure she can help me achieve my goal.

I wish I had something helpful to say...but I'm afraid all I can say is that I hear you and you are not alone in struggling with the things you are struggling with.

Re: Not coping with life - may trigger

I don't think I'll ever get over the loss of my former career @Kurra. In hindsight, what happened to me was illegal from a discrimination point of view, but there isn't much I can do now about that. I often thought about taking legal action against my former employer, but it isn't worth it and now too much time has passed anyway.

I know in hindsight, it isn't too late to forge a career in the mental health field. I am only early middle aged (not quite 40) so there is still time. But I have to ask myself at what cost am I going to pursue this career. I only wanted to be sucessful to make my father proud like he used to be before my first breakdown. If I don't have his support and approval, it would make any success I had in study feel cheapened if that makes sense? My father keeps on asking when am I returning to study, when am I going to get a job etc etc. I desperately want these things to make him proud of me once again. Nuts isn't it? I chose mental health as my chosen career path because I think, from my own experience, that mental health professionals with lived experience are sorely lacking. I want desperately to be a social worker, earn a life for myself once again (the pension lets face it, is hardly a lifestyle choice because of the pittance you have to survive on).

@Glorianna I am crying hard even thinking of the ill words and ill feelings that has been said to me by family over the years. I have few loved ones who are interested in anything I have to say (just my gf and her mother). Because they weren't there from the beginning of the abuse and neglect, I feel it is difficult to rehash without me getting extremely upset. Upset isn't a state of mind I don't like being in as it can sometimes (combined with stress) bring on an episode. Episodes are horrible enough to deal with alone, now I have my gf and her family to think of it is twice as difficult.

I've tried so hard to forgive and forget or let their harsh criticisms go, writing them letters and burning them. Sometimes I think I should write a letter and actually post it, but I don't want to ruffle any more feathers so to speak.

@Phoenix_Rising that's a shame about your psychologist. I tend to gel well with mine, although I seem to be able to make her cry whenever I cry which is kinda weird. I guess it works though. Thanks for replying, it's good to know I'm not alone in my thinking and circumstances.

Re: Not coping with life - may trigger

I guess the real question @Queenie is what do you want to do for you. Doing something to seek your father's approval is all well and good but what you want to do for you is far more important.

My building ew careers as necessary for me to prove to me that I could do it. It was also important for me to be able to stand tall knowing that what I'd achieved I'd done on my own for me!

My first career was my life's work but it was not to be a long term achievement. Thems the breaks eh? But I had to continue working towards something anything that would allow me to be proud of me.

Despite what I have achieved it has never been enough however I have learnt that I really like the person I have become.

All it takes Queenie is one step at a time.

Thinking of you and holding you tight as you work through these feelings.

@Queenie, sh*t sh*t sh*t! I'm sorry about the tears and my terrible advice. *huggles*

Please remember that you are strong enough. Rest well and rug up to some Carsie Blanton - So Ferocious. Excercise is good though, take it a day at a time.

Re: Not coping with life - may trigger

I am very glad you were born Queenie. I struggle with racing thoughts too.
It can be difficult sometimes to achieve still ness. I find that I can relax more and feel better about me when i take a small amount of time each day to do something I enjoy.
Handball is very good at pulling me away from unhealthy thought patterns.
Music is another.
Love for Queenie,
Thanks for your post. It helps me not feel so alone.

Re: Not coping with life - may trigger

@Queenie do you think it could be an "aftershock" so to speak of some of the "biggies" that have happened with you lately? And your mind is continuing this vein of sorting even more things?

Perhaps you need to slow it down and say.. "ok... enough for now".. and enjoy some of those breakthroughs. Let yourself breathe a little perhaps. Yeah easier said than done but something to think about anyhow.

Re: Not coping with life - may trigger

@Queenie,

Eloquent words about your feelings and state of being. I relate to being a lowly pensioner too. My worst breakdowns have been out of jobs. Hopes and aspirations dashed. For me, the feeling that I can hold my head up as a contributing member of society often on edge now. Fear of prejudice and hostility. I understand faking it to make it, especially when it comes to keeping up a happy face. I think that even works to some extent, especially if there's laughter and play to be found. But at times a starker picture of reality takes over. This has become less the case for me as I've got further away from the time of my last breakdown, about nine years ago. But still I get the up and down cycles to some interfering extent, despite the meds, the counselling, and a modestly good life situation. Just sharing things with you that sound something like what you are going through.

It sounds like there is more for you out there than you are curently engaging with. Whether that might be further study is for you to decide. From my point of view, it could even be an interest that might be developed that allows you to lead a less stressful life. Maybe voluntary work if you would like to get more out into the community. Just a few ideas you've probably already thought of, but may be worth saying again anyway.

Hugs.
