Son (22) with schizophrenia

Son (22) with schizophrenia

Living with someone who suffers from schizophrenia is very difficult. Even medicated it seems he lives in a different world and stares a lot whilst smoking cigarettes like a steam train.
Sleeps during the day, spooks around at night.
Any advice about healthy diet, less coffee and smokes, is ignored.
He will never live a productive life.
We've lost family members close to us on the way because of his behaviour and them not understanding mental illness.
Ofcourse I worry about our future.
I need to be single as no other man can live with us.
I need to work full time to provide a roof over our heads and pay the bills. Without me, he'll be homeless, jobless and suicidal as his paranoia would kick in, specially when he thinks the meds are only given to him as he is a guinea pig and 'they' are trying to change his DNA...
I've always wanted children but no one never told me how tough it would be if a mental illness strikes the 'Brady bunch' family image with a thunderbolt.
A medal to anyone who cares for someone suffering mental illness.
They need all the help and support they can get. They deserve better too. Mental illness you don't see from the outside, my son looks like a healthy good looking young man but has no future. Maybe with support and someone pushing him out of his shell but some have tried and given up.
I have given up a marriage and another 7 years old relationship and noe bought a small unit to care for my son, indefinite. We have no other family here as Migrated here in 1987.

My love for my son is very deep and I am so proud of him he went to hospital last year and still takes his depot shot every month. However, I feel anxious and worry all the time. He has applied for DSP (disability pension) but he tells me if he gets rejected, and 'they' want him to work, he will stop the depot needle. It takes his motivation and energy away, He knows he can't work 8-5pm, neither with or without meds.
My good sense of humour is slowly fading but where there's life, there's hope, right?
Thanks for reading my story.

hello @Grasshopper3

@tell me what happened with his dad's visit and your son's reaction

did he tell his dad off?

how are you coping with your guest?

when are you both going overseas?

i read that your parent's health not the best, hope the visit will not be too much of a strain for you both.

is your son excited about the plain trip?

i have visions of him visiting the pilot's cockpit

talk soon xxx

Re: Son (22) with schizophrenia

@Former-Member I don't know enough about it but there is a holistic approach in mental health called 'integrative psychiatry' that I read about in a medical journal. I plan on asking Mr Darcy's pdoc about this.

Re: Son (22) with schizophrenia

@Former-Member, thanks for thinking of me. How are you and your son today? It feels i don't know people here well enough to comment half the time (in case I put my foot in it) but pop in and read often and feel for everyone here. Oh my heart - life just isn't fair.

My brother (SZ) tells me he has to take statins now because his new CTO anti psychotic medication injections are causing high cholesterol.

I wish there was a better way 💕

Lol, it is my husband that has MI (possible Sz), I only have 4 legged fur babies. As the divorce rate is close to 80% in those with MI, I needed to find a thread of people who are committed to helping their loved one. I find that I identity with the others in this group as Mr Darcy does not work, does not self medicate, is med compliant and is much loved. He has more of the negative symptoms of Sz which I believe diagnostically might be called 'mild Sz'
but the illness has not been mild, the negative symptoms have been very negative.

Re: Son (22) with schizophrenia

hello @Former-Member

This makes perfect sense to me.

I actually opened up to my physiotherapist who incidentally is indian and believes strongly in mind body connection as I do. I believe the two are so strongly connected and reinforce each other.

His focus is on chronic pain interestingly enough and he has very interesting posters all around his room. He also uses needles with the principle of neuro science as opposed to acupuncture principles.

Yes integrated psychotherapy, psychology is worthwhile reading.

Also neuroplasticity and neuroscience.

Thank you for that Darcy.

I didnt realise that your husband possibly has symptoms of schizophrenia which are distressing. That would be very hard for you to experience as well as himself.

You are researching and that in itself is such a huge step and positive reinforcement for Mr Darcy.

Love to you both. Love also works wonders in all of this. xx

Hello @Grasshopper3

How are you? Busy with your lovely son?

Perhaps getting ready for your trip?

You have so much going on in every walk of your life and am concerned for you both.

When you get a moment if you could just write a quick response just to let me know that you both are ok.

I wont pester or bombard you, just need to check in that you are both safe and the best that you can be at the moment.

thinking of you both xxxxx

thanks for your concern, I'm not sure if my son is ok, but I trust he is.
We dropped his dad off at airport yesterday and in car to airport he said he wanted to go back to hospital.
I had such a shock. took him home, and drank a bottle of wine and cried in front of him. I kept apologizing to him, poor guy, he is the one needing help and I needed him to cheer me up. Now I'm waiting for him to wake up to see how he is.
will write rest later.
thank you so much for caring.

Yes @Grasshopper3, that would of been a shock

Last time my Hubby said " he was going to the hospital "" , I said " I thought we were ok " , thenhubby took extra meds and went to bed
