Son (22) with schizophrenia

Son (22) with schizophrenia

Living with someone who suffers from schizophrenia is very difficult. Even medicated it seems he lives in a different world and stares a lot whilst smoking cigarettes like a steam train.
Sleeps during the day, spooks around at night.
Any advice about healthy diet, less coffee and smokes, is ignored.
He will never live a productive life.
We've lost family members close to us on the way because of his behaviour and them not understanding mental illness.
Ofcourse I worry about our future.
I need to be single as no other man can live with us.
I need to work full time to provide a roof over our heads and pay the bills. Without me, he'll be homeless, jobless and suicidal as his paranoia would kick in, specially when he thinks the meds are only given to him as he is a guinea pig and 'they' are trying to change his DNA...
I've always wanted children but no one never told me how tough it would be if a mental illness strikes the 'Brady bunch' family image with a thunderbolt.
A medal to anyone who cares for someone suffering mental illness.
They need all the help and support they can get. They deserve better too. Mental illness you don't see from the outside, my son looks like a healthy good looking young man but has no future. Maybe with support and someone pushing him out of his shell but some have tried and given up.
I have given up a marriage and another 7 years old relationship and noe bought a small unit to care for my son, indefinite. We have no other family here as Migrated here in 1987.

My love for my son is very deep and I am so proud of him he went to hospital last year and still takes his depot shot every month. However, I feel anxious and worry all the time. He has applied for DSP (disability pension) but he tells me if he gets rejected, and 'they' want him to work, he will stop the depot needle. It takes his motivation and energy away, He knows he can't work 8-5pm, neither with or without meds.
My good sense of humour is slowly fading but where there's life, there's hope, right?
Thanks for reading my story.

Re: Son (22) with schizophrenia

Hi, just wanna get something off my chest before I catch up on the last posts here. Its the news. That mother who took out eight of her own children has been found not competent to stand trial due to acute psychotic episode SZ, one of the worst they've seen apparently (obviously), and although the signs were there, in retrospect (not coping, walking up the street yelling, recent broken romance, different dads, loads of stress, drugs...) they say there was no history of MI... Something's amiss with all that.
My problem is, and has been since my baby brothers diagnosis, is that fear that he too may lash out one day, hurt someone. Let's face it, some of the delusions are so violent and death focused. Should we be worried? They say MI are no more likely to be violent than anyone else, but not everyone else lives / suffers the war zone inside their head / their world.

My parents put up with a lot from grown baby bro with his s SZ and drugs. I asked recently if they were frightened if him and they admitted they were weary of what he's capable of. Only last year, in their street two died in similar circumstances. I won't sleep at my brothers house (I'm also spiritual and these 'spirits' that he says visit him worry me).
Sorry if I'm being dark. The news rocked me again I think. What can we do?
Gonna make a ☕ Want one? 🌿💕

Re: Son (22) with schizophrenia

I just finished writing to the ABC about that article. Didn't like the incorrect terminology "acute schizophrenic breakdown" instead of "psychotic episode" thus reinforcing the common view linking Sz with violence as if all people suffering from the illness are violent. Later the journalist mentions "long term canabis use" linking Sz with drugs as if all people suffering from the illness take drugs. Certainly a sad and worrying story but they could have also highlighted the lack of support on all levels, cutbacks to funding (local CAT team is no longer available all hours), lack of hospital space, lack of residential facilities for those unable to manage themselves, and so on. The usual list of web links is provided but no mention of seeing a GP, CAT teams, involuntary admissions or more direct approaches. @Former-Member, yep... I just finished a coffee.

Thanks @patientpatient (love your name). I'm glad you contacted ABC. You certainly raise some valid points. I get the impression its easier for society to just write it off in one single cause out of their control - MI seems to be their fav these days. And 'spiritual beliefs'. I didn't like that they put "strange spiritual beliefs" under the same banner as psychosis. Wish I was leave enough and smart enough to also write in and complain about this article.

Thanks for replying. Hope to get to know you better 🍁🌿

Re: Son (22) with schizophrenia

Hi @lapses

I believe that statistics show that people with schizophrenia are more likely to be a victim of violence rather than a perpetrator. The prevalence of violence in psychiatric patients is similar to that of the general population, substance abuse and childhood conduct disorders can increase a patients risk of aggressive behaviours.

Hello @patientpatient

Thank goodness someone has taken that step.

About 2 hours ago I wrote a huge rant about MI and the public health system and etc etc etc

I was too frightened to post it in the end thinking that everyone will think that I have finally lost it.

I just feel so angry about the apathy.

then i read about this!!

need to simmer before posting anything else

thank you

Re: Son (22) with schizophrenia

Sorry @Former-Member about what happened with your tooth.

I'm glad that you were happy with your treatment at the Dental Surgery though.

Personally,I've often found Dental Surgeries and Doctors Surgeries to be like chalk and cheese.

I just wanted to remind you that you are doing a great job with your son and it's a terrible situation that family members are left in as there is often little support from healthcare workers apart from lengthy (and sometimes fruitless) assessments and antipsychotics which usually only target the auditory hallucinations but have no effect on the cognitive loss, problems with reasoning and perceptions, and inability to regulate emotions.

Unfortunately there seems to be excessive emphasis purely on the "hearing voices" part of Schizophrenia by many Psychiatists and they often place no focus on helping the patients "functional abilities" in everyday life and helping them with empathy, cognitive skills, communication skills etc.

It sounds like your son is sensitive and also has problems "grasping all the information" which then leads people to be able to make informed decisions (as shown by the example of him passionately believing in holistic treatment for cancer instead of being able to weight up both options of orthodox treatment and alternative treatment in a level headed way and looking at both pros and cons).

Im guessing that your son doesn't have much of a BS meter either and perhaps blindly believes what he reads on any websites etc without being able to filter it?

The next time,he states something you disagree on,instead of saying "I don't have to agree with you on everything" (which he may misperceive as a criticism or angry) could you try something more "neutral sounding" such as "it wouldn't be an easy decision for that person with cancer to make, ive heard of people who have passed away from using either choice"?

Hey @Former-Member
Despite being painful getting to the dentist was self care, getting their own medicals attended to is something carers put off doing for themselves. Hope it heals quickly for you.

Re: Son (22) with schizophrenia

hello @ivana @Grasshopper3

thanks for response

yes he believes holistic way for his own health too ignore underline am on iPad!,,

he sent me a text message about healthy food meditation exercise watching comedies (nice surprise)

he is intelligently following a path for what he believes will keep him safe and his new home under surveillance as he believes people from his past are after him.

i read everything he texts me I listen to everything he tells me. I then piece it all together and it all fits and tells a story. This helps me talk to him and I am able to have brief conversations with my real son .

at the moment we are in contact now almost daily. So he trusts me. He has told me such and stated that I must not betray him. So I have reassured him that this will never happen.

he has for the moment agreed to Skype whilst I am overseas which is brilliant.

would you believe younger son has said no just texts. He isn't in to computers.

so for now this is the relationship I have and savour.

i hope things are reasonable in your worlds. You get to see them, touch them. Dothey let you hug them? That is what I miss so much.
