Son (22) with schizophrenia

Son (22) with schizophrenia

Living with someone who suffers from schizophrenia is very difficult. Even medicated it seems he lives in a different world and stares a lot whilst smoking cigarettes like a steam train.
Sleeps during the day, spooks around at night.
Any advice about healthy diet, less coffee and smokes, is ignored.
He will never live a productive life.
We've lost family members close to us on the way because of his behaviour and them not understanding mental illness.
Ofcourse I worry about our future.
I need to be single as no other man can live with us.
I need to work full time to provide a roof over our heads and pay the bills. Without me, he'll be homeless, jobless and suicidal as his paranoia would kick in, specially when he thinks the meds are only given to him as he is a guinea pig and 'they' are trying to change his DNA...
I've always wanted children but no one never told me how tough it would be if a mental illness strikes the 'Brady bunch' family image with a thunderbolt.
A medal to anyone who cares for someone suffering mental illness.
They need all the help and support they can get. They deserve better too. Mental illness you don't see from the outside, my son looks like a healthy good looking young man but has no future. Maybe with support and someone pushing him out of his shell but some have tried and given up.
I have given up a marriage and another 7 years old relationship and noe bought a small unit to care for my son, indefinite. We have no other family here as Migrated here in 1987.

My love for my son is very deep and I am so proud of him he went to hospital last year and still takes his depot shot every month. However, I feel anxious and worry all the time. He has applied for DSP (disability pension) but he tells me if he gets rejected, and 'they' want him to work, he will stop the depot needle. It takes his motivation and energy away, He knows he can't work 8-5pm, neither with or without meds.
My good sense of humour is slowly fading but where there's life, there's hope, right?
Thanks for reading my story.

@Former-Member
Thank you for reminding us to look after ourselves.
I started gym again and I ride my pushbike to and from work. When I come home, my son and I go for a walk. Then dinner and bed at around 9am making sure I get enough rest.

This morning he fell asleep at start of day light.
I have been checking up on him during the night. I asked if he was thinking (worrying) about seeing his dad again, as he just arrived back from the Philippines. We should see him today, not sure he hasn't made contact yet.
But he said no, just can't go to sleep.
I said to him this not being able to sleep, is torture for him, and perhaps he should be asking his psychiatrist for a light sleeping tablet. We will see him next week.

Re: Son (22) with schizophrenia

Yesterday a supervisor told me of an error I made day before and how she needed to fix it up. She said I sbould know better, I've worked here long enough.
I told her I had asked another supervisor-in training, to check if I was processing paperwork the right way, and another operator confirmed as she dealt with this ient previous day, that that was the right way.
So three of us were thinking we were doing it rright. however I got told off yesterday and error goes against my name.
Why do I sometimes feel, I am being bullied at work?
I told her I didn't like the way she spoke to me and she apologied but I could have looked it up too.
The reason I am writing this down here, is so I can read it back later on. It is part of my story.
What if she is right? What if I 'should have known' I also know where to look for the information but it's always quicker to ask.
Am I getting more forgetful? Do I have too much on my mind? Am I not perfect?
The answer is yes, yes, yes!
Do I report her remarks and tactics to my manager? Maybe? But he already kniws my situation at home? He thinks I'm just depressed? I don't want to 'rock the boat' I already had runnings in with another superior, which he knows about. It must be me... Grrr
To top it off. my ex partner came into the office. The office is a public place so he has every right to do his business there.
There he was, staring at me. Lucky a co worker called his ticket. I looked at him as he was only a meter away from my counter, tried to act casually, he nodded and did I detect a smirk.... I said, 'hee, hello, how are you, then looked straight back at my computer screen.
I wasn't going to go into a conversation with him! Not at work, not ever, we are though, buddy!!
To top it off my co-worker knew who he was, and tried to help him as quick as possible to get him out. She said she looked at me and saw me staring blank at my computer and she said I got red in the face... I felt soooo embaressed. I put on a lot of weight. I was going to retire peacefully with this man but no, I wasn't good enough, not rich I was trouble and... I have a troubled son who doesn't contribute to society...
I felt quite violated, I just wanted him to go away. Was he here to check up on me? No, surely he was here to see me suffer, working my butt off, getting abused by superiors and our beloved customers!
One of the reasons I went to see a psychologist, is. I want to get out of this 'victim'' mode. I can't wait to go my next appointment because even though I am a good provider and I love my 'troubled' son to bits, I want to love myself too and be able to cope with day to day little issues without feeling hurt, embarrassed, belittled and I just want enjoy my work, to laugh and enjoy life again! I WANT MY MOJO BACK!! 😜
Thanks for reading my story (book)
Take care of you

Re: Son (22) with schizophrenia

hello @Former-Member Thank you for reminder self care

probably doesnt count but I had appointment at dentist. to cut long story short (saving you from reading a story book) diagnosis changed once I was laying on dentist chair, about 6 injections later that tooth originally to be levelled off at bottom was discovered to have rare vertical split down centre needed to be removed. more injections lost count. much hard tugging most came out... another injection...eventually all including roots. one tooth split down the middle two roots at bottom of it, one root had cyst which would have turned to infected abscess if not removed. Whilst returning to waiting room to pay bill and make another appointment, nausea and faintness came over me. 2 hours later, husband had been called, dental nurse giving me sugary drink to sip, dentist checking on me repeatedly, moved to staff lunch room, back to dental chair to lay down, wet towel on head, head lowered below body on chair. felt a complete fool.

low blood pressure had lowered and body had gone into shock. husband had to leave job and collect me take me home. early evening both drove back to get my car (half hour trip each way)

older son rang to find out why had I not replied to text msgs sent earlier re info he required to go to freedom of information records re mental health team where he had cto in this state.

I replied sorry, am in pain at moment, still some numbness at part from hole in gum killing me. managed to have reasonably long talk about psychiatry, medication, public health system, old time electric shock treatment. all going well until I mentioned that i could not comment on just having holistic treatment for cancer as I had not experienced cancer. (bearing in mind that my sisters husband died despite chemo, my sister survived had chemo and many other friends had passed away) i then said well i dont have to agree with you on everything can we just agree to disagree. I was then told off for screaming at him which i never do. i have a very soft voice, which might have sounded slightly strained or anxious due to extreme pain from dental work. I discussed this with my psychiatrist today and he said that he might have gone from feeling comfortable talking to me to being overwhelmed with other voices, noises in his head. He hung up the phone on me when i said that i could not talk any more as was in pain, could we continue discussion tomorrow.

i was left feeling mad, in pain, guilty, anxious. All I had done was try to be there for him whilst I was in great pain.

So I just wanted to write this down as even though he does not live with me 24/7 and I have not experienced this for as long as some others. My pain, my grief, my fears are valid and just as real. They are just different. It is extremely difficult to try to fill all of his needs in one phone call at a time when i dont know when he will react, or how, or how long i have to talk or whether i will ever hear from l him again.l

Just needed to vent. This is not directed at anyone in particular. However should anyone be thinking this, hopefully they will read my rant and rave and gain some insight.

Dental nurse just rang me to see if I was okay and tell me that dentist has said if he gets cancellation he will fit me in sooner. I leave for overseas for 8 weeks in 23 days time. So care and consideration at dental surgery was fabulous.

Rant and rave needed as I have a sense that I have at times said things in a way where they have not been understood or that I have been judged. My response to this is that at no time in the past or future is it my intention to upset anyone. I do however intend to be honest and be myself.

This whole scenario with my son on top of my own illnesses and difficulties with family are all taking their toll again. So I will be only posting on a few threads. not sure which ones. living in the now.

Re: Son (22) with schizophrenia

hello @Grasshopper3

dont worry about your ex partner. he is your ex and with an attitude like his you are better off without him.

work is work and they did not handle it well.

perhaps it was just a bad day for everyone.

back yourself up though as far as if any other bullying happens keep records of everything, details, dates, forward copies to your personal email and then delete on work system.

yes you are human and good management recognise that.

show them how good you are.

@Former-Member
So sorry you had to go through this pain. lucky you went just before your trip. Also I thought you were going to Canada, hence my comments about the bears.
Haha you're going to be quite safe in the UK, only bears there are at the zoo.
Looks like at times you have been attacked by keyboard Nazis. I wouldn't worry about them, write down what you think and let them be... 🙃
I hope you feel better soon, and you'll be able to smile again.
I hope you get more inspiring comments from our penpals, you could do with some TLC right now. @patientpatient @Former-Member

You know I have switched my phone off in the past. I knew I was not in right frame of mind to listen to my son spiritual path...
By the time I rang him back, he'd forgotten all about it and as I felt more able to cope, I could handle the by now calmed down son much better.
(Gosh I hope he never ever reads all this, I would lose his trust forever. )
I talk to you how my sons dad visited us today and how it how my sons reaction was at a later date
Take care of you

Re: Son (22) with schizophrenia

Oh @Former-Member, what a day you had. Think you've earned a pajama day or two after that. The dentist sounds horrific - you know all that local anesthetic is like adrenolin, any wonder you felt in shock, and that tooth, what a pain (excuse pun). Are you on antibiotics? Take vit-c too. Lots of jelly and icecream or milkshakes for you.

Regarding your son, one thing I have observed in my family with SZ is the general lack of empathy. He just can't see your need. I learned to turn my phone off during difficult times like you had today, or not pick-up potentially difficult callers. I know its very hard because of guilt or worry but they will call back later and find another ear to bash in the meantime. Take time you need for you - its a survival thing.

I know what ya mean about feeling misunderstood. Just be the beautiful soul you are, but always keep a piece back for yourself. That's what I've learned anyway, doesn't hurt so much when the turn away.

Hope you sleep well tonight, have a couple of quiet days now, go gently 💕

Re: Son (22) with schizophrenia

@Grasshopper3, you sound like a real champion, right at the top of the pile having to do all the work and the caring, this is tough gruelly work that from time to time you would need a break from yourself... im very new to this game, but i find it borderline cruelty that there is nothing in place from the psych, medical government sude of things to do something real and help you... i look at you with such high regard for you understanding of the illness and responsibility as a good person to take the carer role on by yourself while everyone falls down, it sounds like you doing an awsome job, but @Grasshopper3 you should be getting some help from the industry, you are trying to do your job and there job and there not there pitchin in and doing there bit... showin they care, showin there duty of care...

look after yourself sometime too, they aint going to be knockin at the door trying to ever help you and it is a long hard slog, the schitso illness will be still there if you need a day or two if you need the odd day off to reflect and get strong again, but if you work yourself into the ground and cant help, there is no back up at the moment if you drop off... There should be but there aint
