Welcome and getting started

Isolating

Isolating

Hello.

new here and learning the ropes. I’m 75 finding it harder than ever to meet people that I can relate to.

I probably have CPTSD but definitely have depression and anxiety all my life.

I’m feeling extremely lonely. My only family are my three children and the youngest has recently stopped talking to me for the first time in 34 years. The others are busy.

Last month I went on a trip overseas. It’s had a huge impact on me in so many ways. It’s the first time I’ve been away in many years and I was very anxious about going and now that I’m back, I’m getting more and more depressed.

I also get stressed with online stuff.

Re: Isolating

Thank you. I think I may have made that up myself but it perfectly fits me. I tried the Hippy commune thing. Too straight apparently. Definitely too bent for the country town near where I live. Fitted in perfectly in Melbourne and London. I've given up on meeting like minded people in this part of the world. I'm far more bent than I look. Though I generally have some fun banter when I go into town. Nothing meaningful though.

@LexieJo

I love that "fridge humming" analogy; it's a perfect way to describe how often we just learn to live with those background noises until something happens to turn up the volume. It makes total sense that a big event like an overseas trip has brought everything into the foreground for you 💚

Just on the survey you received from SANE, please don't let that add to your stress! From what I know, SANE sends surveys to members to see how the forums are helping and how else services can be improved. There aren't any right or wrong answers, and it isn't mandatory to keep using the forums. You don't have to do it, but you absolutely can if you feel like it 💚

Re: Isolating

Hi, Thanks for your post. I'm 50 and identify with the things you're saying. The isolation, disconnected from my son, connecting with animals over people, also moved to regional Victoria and hoping to go OS in July ( if world 'leaders' can calm down that is ).

Thought I'd try coming back online for social connection. I did this for a few years in my early 30's and it was good for a while. That was 15 years ago and real life connections have breezed in and out of my life. People just come and go when you're older for no specific reason really.

I wanted to ask you how your OS trip went and about the impact you said it had on you. Was it a catalyst for a new beginning or mindset? How did you feel on returning or what were the main impacts you felt? Love to hear your thoughts.

Hi @LexieJo

good to see you. I’m 58 and managing.
I get very overwhelmed just of a sewing pin falls on the ground as iv had a troubling childhood and effects of a tbi -

I found listening to an audible called Jon Kabat Zinn or relaxing music helps me in the morning ? Also I decided to quit working at 53 so can focus on my wellbeing more.

please write back we are so glad your here

would you like to talk about your trip ?

Re: Isolating

Hi!

I’m not sure who you’re talking to.

I’ve never lived in rural Victoria.

I emigrated from England to Melbourne in 1979.

i did go on a trip though and it’s had a profound impact on my mental health.

only one trip.

Re: Isolating

Hi @LexieJo and welcome to the forums.. I hope you are able to find some connection and understanding on the forum..

There are many people here who feel isolated, lonely or disconnected from society.

There are a number of people on here who are over 60 years old, including me..

There are also, at least, quite a few people on here with cPTSD, including me.

There are also people without children, or who have little or no contact with their children.

I also went overseas last year and I was very anxious before I left..

I know I am very lucky to have had the opportunity to go and to do things I did overseas. .

However, I did find I had quite a down feeling when I came back. Part of it was because, even though cognitively I knew I had an amazing experience, I didn't really feel that way.

I don't know if that is how you felt.

The other thing I suppose is it was back to my "real life", which hadn't changed.

I am grateful I had the opportunity to go and I have many nice memories and saw and did some amazing things.

I hope you find people you can relate to on the forums
