My life with depression and anxiety

My life with depression and anxiety

Hello Everyone,

I'm Dahlia. I feel like telling my story - of at least part of it - to anyone who feels like listening. Perhaps some of you wonderful people can relate.

I have struggled with metal health symptoms as far back as 8 years of age, perhaps even before that. My main problem is moderate to severe anxiety, I can also have panic attacks and a tendency towards depression. I do not really know why. I was depressed on and off even as a young child. I had very dark thoughts and my parents did not know what to do. I don't think child psychologists were a thing back then.

I was afraid of the dark, had tantrums, nightmares and was incredibly shy.

In my mid-thirties I had a complete breakdown and thought I was going crazy. I lost a lot of weight, couldn't sleep and had constant racing thoughts. I saw a GP who referred me to a psychiatrist who prescribed a lot of different medications. It was a six week wait to see a psychiatrist as an outpatient and during that time I suffered immensely with daily panic attacks.

Eventually the tablets seemed to help me, and I felt calmer and was able to gradually begin to get on with my life. The psychiatrist said I had major depression but did not feel the need for any further diagnosis. I fought my way back from depression and eventually stopped taking the medication. The psychiatrist did not know the cause of my depression but felt it could have had a genetic component.

I still lacked self-esteem and found it difficult to express my emotions. I often keep things bottled up and focus more on others than myself. I don't have negative feelings about myself or any self-destructive behaviours, although I am shy and introverted and like being alone. For the most part, I do feel some-what positive about my life and grateful that I have recovered from depression. It was 20 years ago that I had that breakdown.

During the past 20 years, I sought counselling a few times for severe anxiety related to events in my life - for example, when each of my parents passed away after long illnesses. The counselling did not solve my problems but at least it was an outlet. Other things I sort counselling for were work-related stress and the end of an important friendship.

Prior to having any kind of counselling, I don't think I ever felt listened to - by anyone in my life. People give you some of their politeness but rarely have time for you - that it how I have always felt. I think that sometimes even now, my closest friends are not exactly interested in me as a person. I tend to be the one doing all the listening. I would like to be able to change this around, but I don't expect my friends to be able to give me the same level of understanding as a professional counsellor can. That is too much to ask.

The other thing is that I was diagnosed with autism at about 50 years of age. This was a relief and helped me to understand myself better. I always thought that I was different but now I have a reason for that difference. Anyway, autism is a misunderstood condition that manifests in different ways in different people. Probably for me - I just find life very confusing and have to spend heaps of time and effort working out stuff that just comes naturally to others. That could have contributed to my childhood depression - but I'm not sure if the two conditions are related or not.

Lately I have decided to go back into counselling or therapy with a view to reducing my anxiety. It seems to be a long wait to get in anywhere. I think I would also like to go back to see a psychiatrist for an assessment to see if I have anything else that needs treatment, I presume the waiting times are very long these days. I don't know.

I see that I have written all this in a very matter-of-fact way. Believe me, even though it doesn't sound like it from the way I write, I am a very emotional person and spend a bit of time crying in private and quite a lot of time otherwise trying to manage and control my emotions!

Thanks for reading my story.

I am sure the cooking and the cake will go well. Good luck with social stuff. Good on you for hosting. That in itself is huge.

I had a mini fun friendly tantie at supermarket cos they did not stock kombucha anymore! Hmmm! Thats as far as we go, now in our house, re fermentation processes! But I wanted to be able to spurge. Darn!

I do have half a bottle of liquer, that I bought for cooking, so will drop a bit in the cherries today. Its about 4 year old, probably past its use by date and 3 bottles of wine, I bought for a fundraiser yonks ago. Not sure if I should stop giving them away and just smuggle them in the cooking over the next year.... lol

Talk later...

Hello @heartathome @Appleblossom @REDLINEZ750

@Appleblossom

sorry to hear about your mini tantie, I know how it feels when you want a product but can't get it. For me it was sparkling coconut water which used to be available at our supermarket but no longer is. I can't rave enough about this drink - it was delicious. Just pure coconut water that had been carbonated.

I managed not to drink too much Christmas day - I was mixing some cocktails but very weak ones. Mid-afternoon I switched to mineral water. It was a stressful day but I took the time to do some deep breathing and relax my shoulders. I really didn't get into any conversations with anyone, I was too busy cooking.

This morning I'm just glad it's over for another year. How are you feeling today?

@heartathome,

Good to hear that you felt protected by those bikies. That is something that could explain your involvement too somehow, maybe? Like we all want to feel that we belong to a group - we all have that need. My whole life, I always wanted to belong somewhere but never did really.

It is like that even now with my small town. Even though I have made friends, it seems difficult, like there are a lot of tiffs between people constantly and I feel like I could easily get excluded. It's just a feeling and might not reflect reality. I wonder if anyone else feels this way or even thinks about it.

How are you going today?

@REDLINEZ750

it's nice to hear from you. I look forward to hearing more about your journey forward.

Morning @DahliaDreams

I'm personally glad the day is over with!

I had a late one last night, so got up a lot later than normal. I stayed awake through the sleeper and had to take another one in the middle of the night.

Bikies were definitely there for my perceived protection and a sense of belonging. They look after their own. I hope you feel you belong on here Dahlia! You do! 💛

Re: My life with depression and anxiety

@DahliaDreamsThanks for tag. Good on you doing all the cooking and making it a decent day for others. I know well the feeling of saving my breath and not wasting energy in social chitchat convos, when there is more important work to be done. That was the story of life until the last 20 years, when I had a bit more established living arrangement and through the last child in primary school, but it has been very slow for me to build up any social network. Also know what you mean about small country towns. I was wary about settling in one, as I felt that vibe. Though I might love more country living. I am on the edge of Melbourne.

@REDLINEZ750 @heartathome

Know my sense of nostalgia for the sense of kinship of those who ride motor bikes. I will distinguish between bikies, as a total generalisation, cos some are too diehard, and a bit morally wonky, but there are many good bike riders. I will always be grateful of the sense of being cared for, and taught to ride when I was 17, and helped with mechanics. If I was broken down on the side of the road. A rider would always stop. So I felt safe in what I call the brotherhood of riders. That bit about them that was good. I had so little good in my life. I will always remember it with gratitude. Havent really ridden for 40 years but still legal! LOL. Teased me son about being ... nanna on a motor bike... Yes so with those musos we spoke about... I was very much on the "interesting" margins of society.

All the drugs and borderline crim stuff really put me off... so I moved away early 20s ... back to books, classical music and into university.

Recently my nephew asked me if it was thrill seeking. NUP. Sitting on concrete and mechanics aint really a thrill. Nor did I even know about or get excited about the big name bands. Didnt know them from Adam. Never heard of them before but girl at work did. I just was fitting in. Being nice. Keeping her company.

The roque bike clubs were called bikies back in the 70's @Appleblossom . They were diehard, and a lot morally wonky but looked after their own. I was protected (in my head)! The rest of the riders were called bikers. Thinks have changed a lot in the bike scene since then. I'm glad you've got a good memory of riding and the brotherhood of other riders! 💛

Re: My life with depression and anxiety

Hey @DahliaDreams

Thank you. I really enjoy psychology so far. I think it’s going to be tough to pick a field to go into to. So many good options.

Oh wow, art at university must have been fun. It’s great that you still paint sometimes. It sucks that something is holding you back. I hope you regain your passion soon.

That’s completely fair. The holidays can be a complicated time. I had my friends over Christmas eve and had a family dinner Christmas day. It was good.

Do you have any plans for new years eve/day?

That's great news about getting your laptop and speaker (?) back. Does that mean the music's back as well. @REDLINEZ750 Wow. 😲 The bike as well. That's exciting news! I'm really happy for you! Enjoy that open road and be careful. There's a lot of idiots on the road. 💛

Hi @REDLINEZ750

I'm still a student. Got a while to go before becoming a psychologist.
