New Book: Living With Schizophrenia

New Book: Living With Schizophrenia

Hey Forums Family!

I came across this talk on the radio on Saturday.

For those interested in leraning more about living with schizophrenia, you may be interested in interview on ABC Radio with Margaret Leggatt and Mary Ryllis Clark.

Start listening at around 2:44:58

https://www.abc.net.au/listen/programs/melbourne-saturdaymornings/saturday-mornings/105919134?utm_content=link&utm_medium=content_shared

I believe the book mentions SANE as Margaret Leggatt is a co-founder of SANE.

If you feel you want to purchase this book, SANE has been able to secure a 20% off discount code: LWS25

I'm interested to hear if anyone has read it. I've been told it is very helpful for carers/family members of people with a schizophrenia diagnosis.

@unreal @EternalFlower

I read this a while back. It had me in stitches. Yes they are serious topics, but I really must have needed to laugh about it.

I have contemplated and researched schizophrenia for a long time. More than would be strictly normal. They won’t lock me up for it, but I have seen the inside of psych wards for 3 generations of loved ones.

Re: New Book: Living With Schizophrenia

@unreal i found the unlimited time a little silly of them because maybe sometimes we do feel we need time idk - i'm sorry i didn't get to see that post but it is very helpful to me and really a lot of solidarity and kindness of you to comment that, so thank u so much for saying so and taking the time.

i feel kind of embarrassed as i sometimes wear quirky or vintage clothes and it felt like - there was something behind the focus on my tee with puppy. Like it was meant to "infer" something or mean something or just be weird?
they said the puppy was VERY LARGE and maybe it was idk - it was a cute tshirt

so what if i wear a tshirt with a puppy. My pyschiatrist wore a jumper with a cute dog on it and it was a great day for all and cheered me up. My case manager used to wear tonns of rings and piercings and i thought he looked beautiful.

Idk why but all i felt was shame about my choice of clothing. As a girl and even just a person with a body it never feels nice to have a man disect your choices, especailly when it is entirely unnrelated to anything.

I doubt I ever worre the puppy tee again.

my "brilliant" response to your t shirt post was flagged as spam 🤔

Hello @unreal!

I can see a couple of your posts have been flagged as spam, but unsure why! I have reinstated them now, so you should be able to see them.

There was one post, which has been moderated, but we have sent you an email about it and are more than happy to chat over there. ☺️

@EternalFlower
if i were you, i'd buy puppy t shirts for wearing at psych appointments, specifically, just to see how focused and obsessed they become with them over time. 😂

one of the major issues about the time thing, as with all the issues with this record, is that we both know it's bollocks. and anybody with even the slightest hint of critical thinking would understand it's hyperbole. who would expect unlimited time?
the fact is, i was being repeatedly interrupted and when i asked why they kept interrupting me, they said it was because i only had an hour.
honestly, if psychs put as much effort as they do on their creative writing, on actually trying to help people, the world might be a better place

i'm just reading it now.
it was hard to read on not knowing if i'd be laughing or raging, because that text in the first box, it's absolutely right.
s'funny though
i note the address "6 sessions lanes" lol
that's the number of cbt sessions the NHS will provide to most (all?) people regardless of the issue, or even if cbt is inappropriate.
i'm now completely rethinking how to frame the issues with my treatment and records and whether i have the skills and capacity to write in the same manner.
i wish
i meant to ask, why are you looking at schizophrenia, if you don't mind me asking.

Re: New Book: Living With Schizophrenia

Both my parents were diagnosed with Schizophrenia @unreal. It is in my official documentation from when I was in the orphanages from 6 years of age. I have very clear memories of visiting psych ward when I was 10. (1970) Sadly, many of my family have endured multiple admissions over 3 generations. Mostly I had not been permitted to speak of my experiences due to various aspects of SHAME.

I tried to get a PARC admission 6 years ago. Hmmm. That was a balls up. They don’t want to lock me up, probably cos I am seen as too high functioning and even moderately educated in their field. So I am left with activism, education and even holding the system to account. It’s important people working in the system are not too casual about their muck ups. They have made such a mess of my son, I am not buying into progressive arguments that it is a lot better these days. My family trauma load is sufficient and documented that I have been “ granted” NDIS. Now I have to convince support workers that I don’t have an intellectual disability as they are often confused, but they are getting paid to get it right. I am patient and kind, follow the rules, had varied and professional work history, a neck condition from too much stress, but am tired of being played for a fool. Oops … that could be a line in a rap song…

My personality was pretty shy and obedient and introverted, but has broadened a lot in last few years.

@unreal I remembered the Dear GP file because of your discussion with @EternalFlower .

It was on topic.

There are Mad Pride movements around.

You write what is relevant to you.

Boy, is it good to have a laugh sometimes.

Plenty of times we can be serious.

I'm sorry to hear about your experience @Appleblossom . (i don't know how to phrase that so it sounds more sincere, sorry)

⛔
I hope you're well.

@Appleblossom
For sure, and i am going to finish reading the rest later.

I wonder if i should write my stuff formally, and then if i ever have the capacity, rewrite it in the style of a health professional.
I don't know if i have the necessary literary skills to pull it off though.
and i've never really liked writing, it's too exhausting

Re: New Book: Living With Schizophrenia

Don’t worry @unreal you seem sincere enough. What can you say to a lot of stuff? Idk! Just keeping on trying I guess.

I am glad you are gaining insight into the issues around your psychosis.

I have known a few psychiatrists socially and even professionally. In that I taught one for a while, private music lessons. I am dealing with a badly behaved one in a social group atm. Believe me, they are blooming human.
