New Book: Living With Schizophrenia

New Book: Living With Schizophrenia

Hey Forums Family!

I came across this talk on the radio on Saturday.

For those interested in leraning more about living with schizophrenia, you may be interested in interview on ABC Radio with Margaret Leggatt and Mary Ryllis Clark.

Start listening at around 2:44:58

https://www.abc.net.au/listen/programs/melbourne-saturdaymornings/saturday-mornings/105919134?utm_content=link&utm_medium=content_shared

I believe the book mentions SANE as Margaret Leggatt is a co-founder of SANE.

If you feel you want to purchase this book, SANE has been able to secure a 20% off discount code: LWS25

I'm interested to hear if anyone has read it. I've been told it is very helpful for carers/family members of people with a schizophrenia diagnosis.

"Re-entry to the psych ward is always traumatic. It resembles a spacecraft's re-entry into the Earth's atmosphere - lots of fire and smoke, lots of communication about me but not including me, always the people watching, waiting, observing, and picking up the pieces. And just like NASA the more you do it, the less people are interested. It's a lonely experience going out into space and back home again, and it gets less newsworthy the older I get."

really beautiful writing from Heidi - @unreal

Re: New Book: Living With Schizophrenia

@unreal i kinda regret reading some of my notes, but my previous psych always said they shouldn't write things if they'd be annoyed if we read it - they forget sometimes that we can access them, and seem to think it's a space for them to express their dissatisfaction with us. Almost like to vent and feel powerful.

Notes can be delicate, respectful, and kind, but how often are they, really? It's always a little jab.

I was in the ED onnce and recognised a cliniciain so I said to him. Oh - Hi! It's my favourite person!

And he wrote that I was overly familiar lol.

I was just joking. He's nnot even a favourite, nor significant person, just a familiar face whenn I was in a situation where I needed a bit of TLC. So i reacted in a joking way acknowledging that he'd attended to me before. They do this sometimes! They say oh remember when you were here last time - but if I just smile and make a joke - they pathologise it 😞

@EternalFlower

Yep, I've been hit with over familiar too. I think it was because i asked if the guy was Dutch. He was South African, so same thing pretty much 😂

He also said in was dressed inappropriately. It was a zoom meeting. I was in shorts and a T shirt!

Like there is nothing you can do without it being pathologised and THIS is perhaps the biggest failing of many psychs
