Struggles in caring for a partner

Struggles in caring for a partner

*Good evening, I used to be on here quite frequently and then somehow I forgot my log-in details and password, months past and now it's been possibly a year since I last posted. I only happened to find another email address I must have used back in 2021 to register on here and now I am back.

I am not sure if I am seeking anything, maybe just acknowledgment and a space for my experience to be 'held'. Right now I find myself in a difficult space in my relationship, here is a brief summary:
- my partner and I have been together just over 8yrs

- he's been diagnosed with complex mental health struggles and currently going through legal battles from past trauma and childhood abuse

- over the past few months passive thoughts of suicide have been present

- today has been the first day where he voiced the thoughts of suicide and how hard each day is for him

I am straddling a difficult place as over the years my partner's mental health and thoughts of suicide have been a struggle for me. I work in mental health, yet living with someone who sometimes presents as one of my clients triggers an array of responses and reactions that I don't know how to deal with. Today all I could do was accept how my partner wasn't coping, hold him in bed as he fell asleep, and allow him the space and time to sleep the day away. This is not usual for him, he's not needed or wanted to sleep the day away for years. His psychologist is aware and has my number if she's concerned, his medication is well managed, he has a current referral for the local trauma clinic if he needs to be admitted, I am able and willing to discuss risk and safety plan if needed.

What I am struggling with is how selfish I feel when I hurt when he is like this. I miss him so much when he goes quiet and needs to withdraw, it triggers an old wound and my own abandonment issues, and it also reminds me of years of looking after a family member who had health issues. I go from being a mental health professional to someone who is anxious and scared of loosing their partner. My workplace is unfortunately not one of support, if my mind is worrying about my partner, and I feel unable to support a client who is also struggling with their mental health or suicidal thoughts, I am expected to be professional and compartmentalize. The rational part understands my role as a mental health worker and partner are separate, and the emotional part of me is feeling the lack of support and is struggling.

I am sure many of you reading this will find some things that sound familiar in your own experiences as this is part of the struggle of loving and caring for someone.

I am so glad to hear you are feeling better with your partner back home, I am sure this is a huge relief for your nervous system - to have his presence there. @TeaPositive

Oh wow, that's amazing. I am so happy to know that it helped you to understand some threads - sometimes simply meeting ourselves where we are at can provide so much insight and affirm our inner-knowing.

I think accessing your own support is a wonderful idea and I can imagine it would be really helpful to have an additional anchor right now. Please let me know how you go with this.

I understand why shame might be coming up for you, it often does for me too. I wonder how you could explore holding this shame with compassion?

Having a day of unravelling, ah. I am sure that was really vulnerable in the moment. 💛

It's lovely to hear that your couples counsellor was able to provide some guidance and insight.

This made me smile, I truly am so happy to read this. 🥰

Good morning @AuntGlow I am trying to give myself, and my nervous system, a break and some compassion. I knew when I initially responded that the relief from having my partner home might be short lived, however I didn't quite imagine what an impact it would have.

I have linked in with a new psychologist nearby and will be seeing them next week. I think this will be what I need for now in terms of support and exploring the feelings of shame (and others).

For now I shall try to enjoy the small moments that get us both through the day, as well as re-focusing on my own needs around self-care and space for myself.

I am glad to hear you are exploring self-compassion. @TeaPositive 💛

What day is your psychologist appointment? 🤩

What is one thing you can do for your relationship this week and one thing you can do for your self-care? (Or, something that you have already done?) 🥰

Re: Struggles in caring for a partner

Hello @AuntGlow, my psychologist appointment was on Monday and it went well and there are plans to continue once the new year begins.

The relationship roller-coaster continues so this week I am going to try and be as present (e.g. attentive to his needs, offering support and reassurance, and take on what day-to-day tasks I can manage to make getting through the day easier) as possible for my partner AND also try to balance self-care by taking time out for myself to go for a walk or sit quietly. I do struggle with the self-care part but I am at least aware that I need it to function for myself and my partner.

That's really wonderful to hear! Do you feel comfortable with them? @TeaPositive

It must be so tough managing the highs and lows, attending to his needs, and also showing up for yourself - it really is a lot. Your self-care plan sounds really helpful, I like the idea of simply going for a walk or sitting quietly. I wonder if you can also celebrate the small wins in your relationship along the way? 💛

Re: Struggles in caring for a partner

The new therapist seems lovely @AuntGlow and I am looking forward to re-engaging with her in the new year.

I am finding it tough managing the highs and lows of my partner's mental health, and also attending to his needs while he is struggling so much. I can definitely celebrate the small wins in my relationship along the way - even being able to recognise how far we have come over the year and how we are showing up for one another is something to stop and reflect on 💛

This is great news. 🤩 @TeaPositive

And definitely. It's really sweet to hear he is showing up for you too.

Have you found his support system has been beneficial as well? As in, have you noticed some shifts since he has been back? 💛

Re: Struggles in caring for a partner

I want to be honest and say how bad I feel for occupying your time @AuntGlow, and at the same time thank you for doing this 💛

My partner ended up back in hospital, a last minute pivot after his psychologist flagged her concerns with him and I. I am incredibly thankful for his psychologist - AMAZING care and concern. His new hospital psychiatrist seems to be more patient-lead, which at the moment is not as helpful. I am trying to navigate the mental health system and advocate for him as I can start to see that something else may be needed to help support and contain. We at least have a plan over the holiday period so we'll keep on trucking.

Kind thoughts to you as you support so many of us, and wishing you some rest and care as you also navigate this period of the year.
