Struggles in caring for a partner

Struggles in caring for a partner

*Good evening, I used to be on here quite frequently and then somehow I forgot my log-in details and password, months past and now it's been possibly a year since I last posted. I only happened to find another email address I must have used back in 2021 to register on here and now I am back.

I am not sure if I am seeking anything, maybe just acknowledgment and a space for my experience to be 'held'. Right now I find myself in a difficult space in my relationship, here is a brief summary:
- my partner and I have been together just over 8yrs

- he's been diagnosed with complex mental health struggles and currently going through legal battles from past trauma and childhood abuse

- over the past few months passive thoughts of suicide have been present

- today has been the first day where he voiced the thoughts of suicide and how hard each day is for him

I am straddling a difficult place as over the years my partner's mental health and thoughts of suicide have been a struggle for me. I work in mental health, yet living with someone who sometimes presents as one of my clients triggers an array of responses and reactions that I don't know how to deal with. Today all I could do was accept how my partner wasn't coping, hold him in bed as he fell asleep, and allow him the space and time to sleep the day away. This is not usual for him, he's not needed or wanted to sleep the day away for years. His psychologist is aware and has my number if she's concerned, his medication is well managed, he has a current referral for the local trauma clinic if he needs to be admitted, I am able and willing to discuss risk and safety plan if needed.

What I am struggling with is how selfish I feel when I hurt when he is like this. I miss him so much when he goes quiet and needs to withdraw, it triggers an old wound and my own abandonment issues, and it also reminds me of years of looking after a family member who had health issues. I go from being a mental health professional to someone who is anxious and scared of loosing their partner. My workplace is unfortunately not one of support, if my mind is worrying about my partner, and I feel unable to support a client who is also struggling with their mental health or suicidal thoughts, I am expected to be professional and compartmentalize. The rational part understands my role as a mental health worker and partner are separate, and the emotional part of me is feeling the lack of support and is struggling.

I am sure many of you reading this will find some things that sound familiar in your own experiences as this is part of the struggle of loving and caring for someone.

Woohoo @TeaPositive ! What a celecration?

Do you have any goals (big or small), that you are working towards for tomorrow?

Re: Struggles in caring for a partner

It was indeed a celebration @tyme 👏

Today my goals are to take the day slowly, already achieving to do a lot of small tasks, and maybe some more knitting before the evening. Tomorrow my goals are to make it through work without too much stress, and to make time to unwind in a gentle way.

Well done @TeaPositive !

That's exactly right.. when things seem difficult, break up the tasks into smaller chunks, then tick them off as you go!

I always love seeing your username TeaPositive and your profile pic. Don't know what it is, but it gives me happy vibes.

Hello everyone! It was lovely to log back in and see mentions from @AuntGlow @Shaz51 and @tyme - thank you 💛 I've been plodding along okay, reflecting back on all your gentle encouragements and conversations. I am grateful to have had much needed support from this community while in the depths of the end of last year. Things have improved at least by 50%, which is huge, the rest is a work in progress. Today I was proud to stand up for my needs in the relationship, something which takes me a long time to do. I have also re-started reading and knitting, which tells me that my own mental health has improved. The next step is for me to address my needs at work as I am feeling very fragile.

Oh, we are so glad that we've been able to be here for you @TeaPositive 🥰

It sounds like things have been shifting in such a positive direction. How amazing that you were able to articulate your needs - how did that feel for you?

It must feel so nourishing to be able to reconnect to the things you enjoy too, that definitely suggest your capacity is growing.

I would love an update around if you have shared your needs at work? Feeling fragile is more than understandable. You have been through a lot over the past couple of months, so asking for what you need in order to recalibrate is allowed.

Looking forward to hearing from you. 💛

Re: Struggles in caring for a partner

Good afternoon @AuntGlow
It was a big step for me to articulate my needs, it felt scary at the start, and then it was a feeling of accomplishment and a boost to my self esteem. With work continuing to be a difficult place to navigate I have not shared my needs.

Re: Struggles in caring for a partner

Hello wonderful SANE community - I am back after many months absence. Things are improving, still ups and downs, but overall progress is being made. My partner has stabilized a bit more, is accessing an inpatient hospital program, has a new psychiatrist, and is almost at one-year since this ordeal began. I wanted to pop back in first of all thank the amazing individuals who were there when I needed support, but also to re-connect a little with this wonderful space.

At present I am navigating my own mental health journey and have a brilliant psychologist. On the table for me at the moment is a possible AuDHD diagnosis (if and when I have time to pursue it), some physical health concerns (none are serious) that have been flagged as 'chronic' and/or possible Mast Cell Activation Syndrome (MCAS). I've also returned to doing some more reading and study in Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) as it was so helpful a few years ago when I felt powerless and needing 'something'.

That's it for now - thank you again for being there.

Hello lovely! @TeaPositive

Thank you so much for stopping by, we have missed you! 💛

I am so glad that things are improving with your partner.

It sounds like you are uncovering a lot of things about your own mental health and wellbeing too. Amidst this discovery, how have you been nurturing yourself?

ACT sounds like a wonderful focus right now - what ideas are landing with you most?

Looking forward to hearing from you. ✨

Re: Struggles in caring for a partner

Thank you @AuntGlow I've been nurturing myself through cross-stitch, reading, walks, reconnecting with friends, working through the ACT course, and finding work bearable. So many parts of ACT ideas land for me - knowing I have a choice (point), remember to notice and just acknowledge the thoughts and feelings, compassion, revisiting my values, and the 7Rs to see how I can help myself more.

Re: Struggles in caring for a partner

I really love this. It always helps me so much when I can connect with a specific therapeutic tool/theory too. It sounds like you are allowing yourself to slow down and find moments of presence, which I am sure is wonderful for your nervous system right now. @TeaPositive 🥰
