Mixed feelings-might be getting another diagnosis (ED)

Mixed feelings-might be getting another diagnosis (ED)

I have multiple mental illnesses including Bipolar 2, cptsd, OCD, social anxiety. I’m also neurodivergent, ADHD and ASD. I already have tons of labels and a lot going on. I’m getting assessed for an ED on Monday during my psych appointment, I reckon I meet criteria so I am anticipating another diagnosis. I know it explains my how I’ve been feeling but it’s another label, I hate feeling so broken and feeling like I’m complicated. I know my disordered eating habits are adversely affecting my mental and physical health, I’ve just been in denial for so long and would also get defensive when people commented on my eating habits or asked about them.

@AlwaysMyself the ring wasn’t stretchy, but I would fidget with it. It’s easy to fidget with in professional settings because it’s less obvious. It’s not always appropriate to bounce legs and twist in a chair.

The noodle stretchy thingies are the cheap toys you can get from Kmart. I do feel like they can melt a bit in the heat, it’s kind of gross. I’ll need to get a sterling silver ring so my hand won’t turn green. The ring wasn’t the cheapest thing, but it wasn’t luxurious like gold.

There are so many sensory toys out there. I don’t like anything too slimy. Sensory sensitivities also makes it harder to find clothing I won’t get frustrated in wearing. I do feel safer and more comfy in bamboo and other viscose fabrics. Being under bamboo cotton sateen covers also feels amazing. Sometimes you need a bit of a safety net when trauma is triggered, I like wrapping myself in bed. It’s not always ideal when it’s warm

Oh right the noodle and the ring were separate items lol. oops! 😅

Oh I wish I could send you one of my spare/old sterling silver rings @creative_writer ! I have one of those rings with 3 rings - sometimes called a “russian wedding ring”. Ok, just realising now that I have been a fiddler for a long time I guess?? lol. Guess why I liked the ring? 😅 I got it as a young-mid teen I think? Sterling silver all 3 rings.

Oohh I love sateen bamboo sheets. So light and breathable! Its hard to find 100% bamboo ones, so I have one set of bamboo and one of bamboo-cotton blend.

@AlwaysMyself noodles are still amazing and they make swishy noises when you move them.

My skin has alway been super sensitive. My dad also has sensitive skin and has also had issues with tags. Neither of my parents are diagnosed with ND. I think they both have traits. I’ve never done a neuropsych assessment but I’ve been told by multiple professionals that I have signs consistent with ASD and ADHD. I drink caffeine to chill but too much can still make me anxious. My dad mentioned a relative who would drink caffeine before bed to fall asleep 😂. Caffeine doesn’t put me to sleep but I find it helpful for anxiety, attention and migraines. My pdoc doesn’t want me on stimulants for potential ADHD due to bipolar. It’s fair to say my bipolar hasn’t been stable for very long for a very long time. I’ve had periods where I felt stable for it to only go downhill afterwards. I do take supplements.

It is very hard to find 100% bamboo sheets. I just got a bamboo cotton blend. They weren’t cheap but worth it in the end. Sometimes small things make a huge difference in making you feel safer and secure.

I told my GP and pdoc about Monday. My GP checked in to see if I was okay from the SH. It went okay, I hate talking about it but I think it does help to let supports know where I am at. I think I’m doing better than Monday. I’m still depressed, but not to that point. I can resist urges. Maybe it’s not realistic to get rid of the thoughts at this point in time and it’s just about managing SI and SH. Staying safe is enough for now

Re: Mixed feelings-might be getting another diagnosis (ED)

@creative_writer There often are hereditary factors in ND 😉. As I said, my GP is sure I have autism. And I’ve always felt my dad has a lot of autistic traits too and very much adhd traits. But he has learned masking techniques or behavioural modifications mostly. People just find him a odd socially and “always on the go” mentally and physically - unless he is hyper-focused that is! I don’t have the physical “on the go” (perhaps due to chronic fatigue?) but my brain is always-on but not as severely distracting and scattered as my dad!!

Oohh interactions between ADHD meds and bipolar! of course I don’t know much about it, but yeah I can see why being cautious about stimulants could be really sensible — I am assuming the risk of triggering a mania?

What is “typical” for bipolar in terms of episodes of depression/mania when on medication that was thought to be “fairly stable”? In terms of frequency and duration.

I don’t really have much to compare to, but I knew someone who would have really severe episodes of about a month and it would happen perhaps 1-2 times a year - but also depended on external stress factors too i think?

I’m glad you told pdoc and GP about the Monday episode of SH, so that they can be there to support you and know that you may need some extra check-in or support. 😍

Really proud that you can recognise the difference between having the thoughts/urges and also being able to ignore/resist acting on them 😊. I think this is a really key skill and can be so hard, so don’t sell yourself short with patting yourself on the back from me!! It’s been 20+ years since I engaged in SH, but I still get the urges really often - pretty much any time I am feeling overwhelmed or depressed or hopeless! I wish I didn’t, because it’s tiring to feel it and resist it. Apparently it’s also really common in autistic brains! …could explain why the urges never went away even when I stopped engaging in it and used alternative coping/expression methods.

Wait, addicts get a 20 year pin/coin for abstinence, right?? where’s mine for SH abstinence???? 🤣😅 I wanna a fidget-coin for SH resistance!

@creative_writer I hope this can make you smile in the way that this thought also make me smile.

I bet you someone has made one somewhere. Now I have to google that to find out 🤣

@AlwaysMyself I am internally hyperactive. I do fidget a lot and some people may see that as some form of hyperactivity but I can remain seated and have never had behavioural issues. I was the quiet sensitive kid. I always had anxiety and was painfully shy. I have both a good and bad memory. I can hyper focus and struggle with attention. ADHD is way more complex than people realise.

Stimulants can trigger mania. I am also prone to those high risky mixed episodes. I’ve never had full blown mania. Mixed hypomania and depression do still create a dangerous storm.

I’ve had periods where I settled after medication adjustments, it’ll last a short period of time, like a month till I’m back to unstable. My pdoc thinks I need to address underlying trauma. I have had multiple traumas over my lifespan, including attachment, bullying, growing up with a parent with mental illness, enmeshment trauma and emotional invalidation. I would probably say SA has caused the most issues. I’m sure other traumas still affect me.

I also believe SH is more common among ND. ND is still so misunderstood. The sensory differences play a huge role in how we manage and cope. Sometimes I’m confused about what is social anxiety and what is sensory overload.

I haven’t heard about the pin/coin. I can see how it would work 😊. I need to google one 😂

Oh yes, this seems to be quite a commonly undiagnosed (i.e. missed by people, but diagnosed when realised what was going on as you say) profile of ADHD - and especially for females. Likewise the same issue with autism & internalised presentations not getting “seen” externally and thus missed.

A friend of mine said she found this book really eye-opening for her: https://www.penguin.com.au/books/the-year-i-met-my-brain-9780143779773

I don’t know how it has been received by ADHD-diagnosticians, but I just read that it has been nominated for Australian Book Industry Awards, so I’m guessing it can’t be considered a pile of nonsense?

I hope that as you gently and slowly eep into working through trauma when you find the right person for it that it does help with the bipolar stability. 😊. I imagine that flashbacks and other emotional dysregulation could make it more volatile; I mean, it does for “unipolar” depression so even for the depression side of bipolar it makes sense.

Re: Mixed feelings-might be getting another diagnosis (ED)

@AlwaysMyself ND is often picked up in females during adulthood. I internalised it as a kid and it was only until adulthood I realised I was undiagnosed ND. It took me a while to accept my ND, but it’s been helpful to educate myself.

I know my mum is reactive to relationship stress when she had depressive episodes in the past. Some of the arguments she had with my dad would set off intense SI but she wouldn’t act on the thoughts. She was diagnosed with MDD, but would at times get quite agitated. I don’t think she had bipolar. My agitation can reach manic level. I do get snappy when I’m in a mood episode but I don’t get as reactive as my mum with relationships. I have different triggers that probably affect my bipolar

Re: Mixed feelings-might be getting another diagnosis (ED)

Interpersonal conflict can be a big trigger for SI for me too sometimes, because I don’t feel understood or I re-question why I am bothering to keep living if I’m upset with my mum (her being the reason i keep living). It’s one of a few triggers for more acutely distressing SI for me 😅. Pretty much any time things feel “too much” or “not worth it”.

Not sure if you are interested, but after I was told about the prevalence of SI in internalised-presentation autism especially, I found it really interesting and relatable especially with regard to the trend in late-diagnosed female autism with high IQ.

(https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/abs/pii/S1074742722001228 study explained in article https://medicine.uiowa.edu/news/2023/03/autism-combined-high-iq-increases-risk-suicidal-thoughts as just one of many such articles, incase you or anyone else reading is interested). (I’m not a snob who had an IQ test; I had one administered because someone needed to record one for assessment in their psych registration so I was a guinea pig. I don’t consider IQ related in any way to a persons worth - I want to be very very clear on this! I am only mentioning it because it matches exactly my type of depression presentation when considered within Autism+IQ-score-range).

I’m glad you have been able to come to terms with and learn to accept your ND-ness @creative_writer 😊.
I think because I have always liked and appreciated people for their unique qualities and also accepted myself as “myself” and that I felt very different from my peers growing up that having other people also sense that I am autistic has been validating of how I have always felt different but didn’t have external explosions that caused educational disruptions or social relationship breakdowns. I just hated living instead!

They often say that ND people can be a lot more creative brains too 😎

Re: Mixed feelings-might be getting another diagnosis (ED)

@AlwaysMyself everyone has their own triggers.

It would make sense for SI to be louder in those who are ND. ND are often burnt out, masking and struggle to manage sensory sensitivities. Sensory sensitivities is enough to make my SI worse.

I tried so hard to mask but people always saw me as different. It helps to find other ND individuals because communication flows so smoothly.

I process emotions differently. I am a visual and somatic processor. I can visualise what my emotions feel like and I feel them a lot in my body. I just don’t always have the language. I can write poems, but just saying “I’m feeling …..” feels too superficial and inadequate.
