Mixed feelings-might be getting another diagnosis (ED)

Mixed feelings-might be getting another diagnosis (ED)

I have multiple mental illnesses including Bipolar 2, cptsd, OCD, social anxiety. I’m also neurodivergent, ADHD and ASD. I already have tons of labels and a lot going on. I’m getting assessed for an ED on Monday during my psych appointment, I reckon I meet criteria so I am anticipating another diagnosis. I know it explains my how I’ve been feeling but it’s another label, I hate feeling so broken and feeling like I’m complicated. I know my disordered eating habits are adversely affecting my mental and physical health, I’ve just been in denial for so long and would also get defensive when people commented on my eating habits or asked about them.

@creative_writer we really are creatures of comfort, and when our pain and despair has become comfortable, it can be legitimately terrifying trying to imagine our life without it, even if it's all we want.

I know for myself, when I'm activated it's not really easy to remember things like safety plans. Try not to be too hard on yourself about it. It can help to put visual reminders around - keep safety plan in view/accessible, or put up post-its with some reminders.

Curious if like... when you're heightened is there a sensation or resistance coming up in your body that makes it hard to want to reach out? Could be worth exploring with your supports.

Something also helpful is to reach out at the start, when we aren't too far down the spiral. As in, don't wait till you really need it, because for me that's when it's a lot harder to initiate the sequence for calling for support.

What are you up to this evening? You feeling ok in your body or are things feeling like you're dipping?

@Jynx I shut down and go into default mode. Default mode= not reaching out for support. I think the child in me pretends she doesn’t need people. My attachment stuff comes out.

I have also had those intense impulsive moments where resisting felt impossible and I don’t want to be stopped.

Some of it could be the fear of being misunderstood and rejected. I find being around people and feeling lonely is more painful than being lonely alone. I know logically if I did get someone on the other end I didn’t vibe with, I could try again and I will most likely get someone else.

There is probably quite a bit that needs unpacking in therapy.

I’ve just had dinner and I’m not really doing much for the rest of the day. Lots of self care like prayer, music, skincare, staying connected with the forums. Might try some breathwork alongside prayer. My evenings aren’t the best for me. I’m skipping the social event because I’m completely wiped out and just need more gentle activities. Things dip at this time, I’ve reached out for support today which helped a bit so hopefully I won’t crash as much. Also having lots of GERD, it’s been bad since last week. It’s left me with tenderness in my abdomen. I’ll need to talk to dietician on Tuesday, because that definitely doesn’t help. Chronic pain also can feel intense later in the day. Maybe a head massage would be good. I’ve had a long and emotional day. I needed to talk, but it took a lot out of me.

Do you have much planned for tonight?

@creative_writer yeah so legit. It's your nervous system's automatic pattern, it's hard to circumnavigate - but not impossible. Visual reminders, affirmations and mantras, prayers too, write it on your safety plan - give yourself permission and encouragement now, that you can try to access and accept in those moments when you need to.

Glad to hear you dipped out of something when you felt the need to. It can be a difficult balancing act hey, where to spend our energy. I'm glad you can vent here when you need to 😊💜

@Jynx I think sometimes you need to talk or write things out to know what is going on. Sometimes you need to encounter triggering content to realise what is going on internally. I think I mentioned getting a triggering interaction on shift. It may have been uncomfortable, but it made me realise what I probably wouldn't have otherwise. I also found it super rewarding just supporting someone, I managed in the moment. The processing happened a few weeks afterwards. I know I am capable of holding space for others, I just hope I can increase my capacity over time. It would be amazing to work in the therapeutic space in my own capacity of course. Not sure if I could do therapeutic work 9-5, five days a week.

I've done quite a bit of venting on here and on a helpline. I've just had so much going on for me lately. I'm learning to be okay with expressing without feeling guilty. Though next time it might be easier to express before the tank gets this full. It helps me organise my brain for my next psych appointment. I feel like it's going to be a big appointment.

I'm also going to be away for a few weeks from the forums. I'll be on for the next few days before I go on my break. I won't be taking any volunteer shifts either for some time. Just need some time away to do others things. My screen time is super bad, probably zaps so much out of me

@creative_writer reminds me of this, actually -

Which can at times feel pretty overwhelming. But you absolutely can build up your capacity, especially when you're also supporting people along the way.

I'm so glad you've been able to vent hun, it really does help hey. My psych was talking to me about how we are almost unable to process stuff unless it's externalised - talk therapy being one method, of course, but also stuff like art, poetry, movement, and through sharing with our connections. So glad you can utilise the forums as part of that process 💜

Oh true!! Sounds like you are being proactive and taking steps to nurture yourself. What sort of things, you going away or just focusing on other stuff? No obligation to answer, I'm just curious. Good on you hun 😊

@Jynx I hate it when people judge what I am capable and not capable of doing. I may have limitations and may always have limitations, but you can work around. 9-5 five days a week of therapeutic work isn't for everyone and that's okay, plenty of therapists work part time. I've been in therapy and felt my therapist at the time didn't think I could do, it was frustrating. I'm relieved my current supports believe in me.

It is very true we need to externalise. I feel like mental health struggles are often internalised and not always obvious to others.

I'll be connecting with nature more and spending more time out. I'll update you on what I get up to once I am back 😊. I hope you have a chill Sunday💖, I need to start clothes sorting out sometime soon, I had extra caffeine from my new tea.

@Jynx I hate when people have set ideas of what you can and cannot do. Even my supervisors on placement were super supportive and believed in me. After talking to my supervisor, I realised I wanted to keep the research option open too. Many people do both research and clinical work. Though I'm definitely not jumping into a PhD right now. I wish they had more research options for non PhD because Masters degree still equips you with skills (especially if you've had a research placement).

I am thinking of going for a walk, my knee feels weird today (might be my workout yesterday), might help to get some gentle movement. I didn't get up to much today, I did some self care, tried to reach out to a helpline but technology stuffed up. Didn't reach out again, maybe I will after the walk if I still need it. I wonder if a significant part of the issue is OCD. Being depressed isn't helping, and cptsd is hard. But I get these obsessive thought patterns, I am wondering whether these are OCD linked. I definitely obsess over cleanliness of objects and myself, but mental contamination thoughts have similarities with physical contamination thoughts. It might not be enough to just work through trauma, but also the OCD that comes from it.

Did you get up to much today?

Re: Mixed feelings-might be getting another diagnosis (ED)

@creative_writer oh I love that! Keeping options open is always good 😊 What draws you to research? Any particular areas of interest?

Walk sounds lovely, hope your knee is ok!

Have you talked through OCD stuff with any of your supports? That's the thing about CMH hey, everything can feed into and overlap with everything else 🙃

Nah not much, I did the vacuuming then got some sunshine 😊

Re: Mixed feelings-might be getting another diagnosis (ED)

@Jynx I want to do research on ND, just not sure what. I would love to get research experience along with clinical work. I have looked into research assistant jobs, but there are not many for social work.

My knee feels sort of warm. I'm not having pain but it just feels weird. Maybe I overstretched it.

I think I need to talk about OCD more in therapy. CPTSD explains a lot, but it might be feeding the OCD cycle. I'm struggling to break free from it's hold, I keep getting stuck in tangles. Reducing the shame will help a lot. I know the shame got stuck where it doesn't belong, I need to get it out of myself.

I was meant to sort out my clothes today, but didn't get around to it. I need to do food prep tomorrow, and will try to sort out my clothes too. I am struggling with motivation right now because of depression, and keep getting lost in thoughts. I guess I've made it this far into the day safely despite my not so good urges.

I hope the vacuuming left your house feeling clean and refreshed. Vacuuming makes a huge difference
