@creative_writer it can be so hard to move out of that mindset - particularly when we're still exposed to that 'rugged individualism' type of messaging all the time through the media we consume. Combined with enough previous experiences of being shut down, rejected, or ridiculed for your vulnerability and need for connection and support, to me it's no wonder it feels like a huge mental barrier for you - particularly in a heightened mindset.
For me, it really helps to remind myself that humans evolved as social creatures. This idea that we ought to be able to just 'cope on our own with whatever life throws at us' is a relatively new one, maybe only a century of it, compared to the 300,000 years humans have been around, caring for one another. Our ability to signal for help exists in our very anatomy; we have tear ducts so that we can cry, and we cry so that others know we need to be held.
This is all a very intellectualised approach of course. We also need to physically teach these things to our bodies, or like you pointed out it's a matter of unlearning the messages we've been saturated by, so we might reawaken what we already know in our genes. It's sooo hard when we've lived through so many painful instances of being shut down or ostracised for asking for help or sharing our traumatic experiences. We're experiential learners, so our bodies need to learn/unlearn too; we can know something cognitively and still feel completely incapable of actually doing it. It takes time and it takes consistent practice. You already do it in a way, just by sharing your vulnerability here with us!
When it comes to crisis lines and stuff, perhaps you could 'practice' by calling them more than needed - at least at first. Literally giving yourself permission to call when you're just feeling a little low, or you've had a difficult, but not overwhelming kind of day. I find it easier to overcome those internal barriers when I'm not a complete mess 😅 But yeah, I reckon the more you do so, the more comfortable you will get with the whole process, and the easier it will be to reach out for help when it really does count.
Food for thought anyway 💜
