Talking through trauma and PTSD

Therapy types

Therapy types

Seeking help, thoughts, info from life experiences etc

currently doing schema therapy for CPTSD and feeling have hit a wall.

been reading little bits about ACT therapy and wondering if could be worth talking with psychologist about next session in couple days time.

wondering what type of therapy might help me coming to terms with, and deal with, ongoing grief from loss of family members 40+ yrs ago.

Psychologist has mentioned EMDR various times. Not something I feel I can do

Dear @AlwaysMyself

@hi I’m going through a tough time with everything.
I gotta book in for a ultrasound of my tummy and

I’m just very annoyed with myself. I usually get like this at end of year ;

Should be all fixed by January …….
is it you who wants to know about head injuries ?

Re: Therapy types

Head injury ; @AlwaysMyself

what iv noticed :

head injury 40 years ago :

clinically dead 7 times

coma 6 weeks.

I constantly change the subject - I go on millions of different tangents so I confuse people who don’t know me.

if iv had an operation and the anathesists don’t take my head injury into consideration it takes me months to get a grip.
I am very confused.
easily fatigued

change subject while talking.

dizzy

bad with money but reason it all in,

I need someone around when I’m talking because I say sudden things which are either inappropriate or make no sense.

No concentration

say many words which don’t make sense.
no memory.
can get very moody.

also if I catch a plane is takes me weeks and weeks to recover.

there is scars all riddled through my brain which is synonymous from having a frontal lobal tbi.

when it first happened, for one to a couple of years there was support but because the doctors were all so surprised with my recovery, I was basically forgotten about because symptoms I gave can be construed at a pretty whacky 20 year old …,,,

Re: Therapy types

Yes, @PeppyPatti that was me who was interested to know more about brain injury.

That is fascinating, thank you. 😊 I cannot imagine what that must be like for you if/when people who do not know you may not understand or may treat you negatively because of not understanding what you say (or thinking it is inappropriate or on a different topic tangent).

I think only maybe 1% of the time I am not sure what you mean by a post, and often I just assume it is me that just does not understand (like with What About Bob which I had not heard of 😛) - it's not only your posts sometimes I do not understand 😅. I think you do amazingly considering how big an impact that it has/can have for you! 😍

Clinically dead 7 times and coma 6 times?! It is truly an understatement to say that we are lucky that you are alive and we get to know you. 😍 That must be very scary!

I am sorry that doctors and people supporting you have started to fade over the years and decreased support. It is great that you had such a good recovery from what they expected, but you also deserve continued support. 🤗

@Flutterbug9 Thank you also. 😊 Your understanding tallies with @PeppyPatti 's experience.

I hope the new psychologist is way more empathetic and sensitive and supportive! I get where the old one was coming from with being "constructive" to improve, but sometimes it is just as important to dwell for longer on what we ARE doing well and celebrate those wins (even if they can be improved/extended also). Constantly feeling like it's not good enough and always the "but" would be very discouraging and frustrating, I imagine.

Re: Therapy types

@Jynx @I’ve been thinking back your words on another thread about therapists will to admit mistakes. 3 times in last 12mths approx I’ve said to psychologist how her words and/or actions have had negative impact on me. Never any type of apology. Acknowledgment the last time was thanking me for my feedback.

have been thinking of discussing with new psychologist things I do and, more so, don’t want to happen. Have realised be difficult not to mention summary of things that have been happening, didn’t want to do that. Not sure what to do now

Re: Therapy types

@Flutterbug9 i reckon it's totally OK to tell ypur new psych what you do and don't want/like the support to be like. If i were in their shoes, I'd love that because it gives some guidance (ahh yeah that might be the towards ND part of me loving direct communication 🤣).

When I was looking for a counsellor I sent the person an email with an outline of what topics I wanted to discuss / have support for, and asked them if it was something they felt comfortable with, as well as felt able to have input to. I don't want a counsellor who I cant talk openly and honestly to about the issues I cant talk to other about. For me, knowing that they have opted to take me as a patient knowing what topics/issues I have, that gives me permission to talk about them without worrying about if its difficult listening.

Thanks for your perspective @AlwaysMyself

helps with my thoughts

Id prefer to ‘lay my cards on the table’ asap.

Keep trying to remember words a neighbour told me. “Think of therapists as tradesmen. Explain the help needed. If they dont deliver, sack them and get someone new”
