Talking through trauma and PTSD

Therapy types

Therapy types

Seeking help, thoughts, info from life experiences etc

currently doing schema therapy for CPTSD and feeling have hit a wall.

been reading little bits about ACT therapy and wondering if could be worth talking with psychologist about next session in couple days time.

wondering what type of therapy might help me coming to terms with, and deal with, ongoing grief from loss of family members 40+ yrs ago.

Psychologist has mentioned EMDR various times. Not something I feel I can do

Re: Therapy types

@Former-Member was it like she wasnt fully transparent about her intentions? That sounds so hard. I hope u have clarity asap

I never did emdr but wanted to and had an experience of meeting someone to do it but she wanted to be more a therapist and same thing emdr got on back burner and I ran out of funded sessions

What is schema therapy ? I feel like people idealise therapists but ideally a good rapport would be about attachment- someone healthy, who u can trust, who won't mislead and abandon and keeps u in mind as a person.

Its sure a hard journey to find that person.

Re: Therapy types

@EternalFlower My understanding of Schema Therapy is identify why a person thinks or reacts the way they do (ie which Schema is involved) and, by brainstorming all possibilities, to look at things from a positive aspect. It’s about retiring the brain from auto going down the rabbit hole and, instead, looking at situation differently.

eg I hadn’t heard from a relative for quite awhile. My brain went into auto blame mode (ie various reasons where it was my fault). Brainstorming came up with lots of reasons for no contact from her. Shifted through the list to come to more likely reason/s for not hearing from her. One of my short listed possibles turned out to be correct.

therapist I had a unique connection with I saw many years ago. To me it felt like we were having general, comfortable conversations about various topics. What I quickly found out was he was also tuning in to my words, rephrasing and exploring at times. Using this approach he got me exploring what I held against one relative, something I had subconciously held for more than 30years

@Former-Member sounds interesting , i see some overlaps with ACT there as well - interesting

i think i was confused with somatic processing which seems to be the rage as well - i like the sound of schema therapy, thank u for taking the time to break it down.

Re: Therapy types

I have noticed differences in my thought patterns. Noticing more and more I’m thinking of all possible reasons for people’s words and/or reactions.

I mentioned to current psychologist my interest in doing ACT following early posts on this thread. I’m now waiting to have discussion with new psychologist and see what her thoughts are on types of therapy.

Re: Therapy types

@Former-Member i find a lot of therapists are very warm to ACT - and i have used it a lot in public settings like PARC and in groups

I have to be honest for me it feels best if the therapist knows about it well - as some ppl seem to focus on the individuals (Russ Harris) rather than the ideas. A cool ACT activity i did with a psychologist was to scrunch up a piece of paper and realise that after a certain point it wouldn't scrunch anymore, and all the energy didn't make it smaller. It made me reflect on the time avoiding or battlng negative thoughts, which according to ACT, are always gonna be there.
I like the leaves on the stream excercise as well.

I've tried in my lifetime: ACT, psychodynamic, MBT and and some parts of DBT - i personally feel its all about how you trust the therapist, and that attending the therapy comes from yourself - you can't ever coerce someone to get well and coercion has no place in mental health treatment, in my view. Thanks for sharing your journey 🙂

Re: Therapy types

@EternalFlower thanks for sharing your experience.

mentioning to my psychologist recently that I was interested in ACT she advised me she is trained in ACT but hasn’t used that therapy for quite awhile as does EMDR with most people and would need to read all her training material. I felt a wave of uncomfortable feelings ie red flag. Few days later I realised she became broken record when discussing different item and that I had zoned out. 2nd time this has happened, one reason I’ve said I need to work with someone else. Another reason is due to me feeling I’m getting nowhere. For months, at end of session psychologist would about having made notes that in next session we would talk about topic x,y,z. Next session (which was 4 or 6 weeks later) there was no discussion about that topic.

Re: Therapy types

I’ve got appointment with current psychologist this afternoon @EternalFlower and, same as last few appointments, I don’t want to go. During the previous appointment I gave her the name of psychologist of my preference as possible transfer. Because it’s happened other times before, I’m expecting current psychologist will have let me down again due to ‘having forgot’. I’ve grown tired of hearing those words from her.

last few days have left me thinking of not continuing seeing any psychologist, at least for awhile. I don’t feel 2.5yrs seeing this same as psychologist has been a benefit for me. In fact, feel worse than when I started. Only thing I know is feeling indecisive about things is leaving me feeling more and more upset and struggling to enjoy things I used to

Re: Therapy types

Things went fairly well this afternoon, feeling very relieved.

Have been advised I will be transferred to psychologist of my choice and will start seeing her from next year.

think my fears, concerns etc all got too much for me.

thanks for listening @EternalFlower

Re: Therapy types

Dear @AuntGlow

iv wondered what therapy you’ve done but you have experience re : work as well right ?

I always try to find my friend @Mazarita but miss her and I think we would loosely discuss this years ago……,

@TAB

i think iv been very lucky with therapy. My Gp knew I was struggling and she used to send me to see Psychiatrists in early 80s and I saw one from age 17 to 21. She gave me a space to freak out but I don’t know if she was any good but the ran the whole shebang of Psychiatrists in Western Australia……

One year, she died looking out her back garden on a nice sofa/ seat at 65 with a smile on her face …….. that’s nice.
From 20 years old to about 25 my first husband and I let a group of professionals train on us - we were poor —— but remembering that time well

the trainees were pretty paternalistic. I used to sit back thinking ……” I sit back and disappear ……”

and at 25 i began Psychotherapy which am still in at 58.
but my mum is narcissistic borderline she refuses to acknowledge this——/

since then I’m very aware of ‘ labels, borderline is not bad

narcissism is not bad

I’m head injured and I’m not bad I just say crazy things at the wrong time.

in a good way ….
in that Psychotherapy iv had Judith Richard’s trauma therapy which was absolutely good and took a long time to finish because I went through feeling like I’m better than the person doing it for me.

I don’t know about long term therapy. But I need it
