Talking through trauma and PTSD

Therapy types

Therapy types

Seeking help, thoughts, info from life experiences etc

currently doing schema therapy for CPTSD and feeling have hit a wall.

been reading little bits about ACT therapy and wondering if could be worth talking with psychologist about next session in couple days time.

wondering what type of therapy might help me coming to terms with, and deal with, ongoing grief from loss of family members 40+ yrs ago.

Psychologist has mentioned EMDR various times. Not something I feel I can do

Thanks to @Appleblossom @AuntGlow @tyme for listening, helping me brain storm and providing support the last few days.

chat with psychiatrist went well. Current psychologist going to make enquiries next week about me possibly being transferred to psychologist that I have identified as hoping to work with

YAY! I am so proud of you for taking this step. @Former-Member I know how vulnerable it was all feeling for you and these decisions are never easy. We meet people where we are at and it's okay to shift, change, evolve and need new people to support us we grow. You're doing a very brave thing here by looking towards trying something new. Taking this step in itself is a big win!! 🥳

Re: Therapy types

Psychologist has been offering to loan me a book of hers, on Friday she finally bought it with her. Hearing her say there is no hurry to return it I knew I had to say something. Had been dreading saying I want to work with someone else due to fear of reprisal. Once I started talking the words easily came.

remember saying for benefit of my MH I need to start working with someone else. Reminded the psychologist late last year something similar happened and I gave her 2nd chance.

reading through the blurb about the other psychologist employed by same business I kept going back to one specific person. Words of ‘helps people identify their goals’ ….. ‘space to explore their experiences’.

Psychologist I’ve been seeing acknowledged can be good for different reasons to transfer to different psychologists.

Ah, good on you @Former-Member!

I know how hard these conversations can be, and sometimes they are best explored in moments like this - where you know the hard thing has to be said.

I am looking forward to hearing about what happens with this new psychologist. 🤩

Re: Therapy types

Thanks for the update @Former-Member . In a way, I'm glad your psych also sees that it's sometimes good to have a change in psychs.

Are you feeling at ease about this? I'm mindful that sometimes, starting with a new psych can be anxiety-provoking.

Also, hope your pain has been ok.

Re: Therapy types

Thought of seeing different psychologist is sitting fairly comfortable @tyme. Feeling anxious about possibly not being able to see the psychologist of my preference and concerns being stuck with someone else.

Psychology firm I was referred to couple years and are still linked to has 10+ psychologists and counsellors listed on their website. Reading info on website about each one I have my preference plus 2 others that something in there info ‘catches my eye’.

amount of pain has decreased quite a lot. Certain movements still generate lots of pain. One good day, the following day isn’t good. Walking ability without pain is gradually increasing.

Re: Therapy types

I hope things improve for you @Former-Member . And I'm thinking that even if you chose a psych and it doesn't work out, it's okay to transition to another? Also is there a wait time to see they new psych?

That pain sounds terrible. I cannot even imagine what it would be like to live in constant pain. The very thought really makes me put my heart out to all those needing a hug.

Re: Therapy types

I’m waiting to find out if preferred psychologist is taking new patients plus if she has a waiting list.

current psychologist offered to find out this info for me @tyme. I currently have 2 appointments booked with current psychologist, first one being n a weeks time

Re: Therapy types

Hi @Former-Member i dont so agree with some of the comments about the therapist and choosing a therapist who jas ur own modality

I personally feel having a therapist u trust is most of recovery regardless of what they practise. They do a lot of act in certain public settings which I found helpful to trauma as well as finding someone u can trust. Also please remember that ppl can be very attached to their recovery stories so think it works for everyone

Ur gut and feeling is always number one. Even my therapist said that

..it has to feel comfortable to u. Good luck !!

Re: Therapy types

@tyme Wondering if you can help with query I have about Guided Recovery? All good if answer is ‘Don’t know’

6 weeks as of Monday I will be in hospital for entire week (admission will be Monday morning with discharge some time Saturday). Info re post discharge is no driving, using machinery etc for 48 hrs.

any idea how this will impact on the program from perspective of staying linked in for rest of the program?

pain wise, my pain isn’t to the level it was prior to RFA. Item that still generates lot of pain is making the bed due to the bending. I’ve got set of plastic wedges that slide between mattress and base which provide lot of help.

Re: Therapy types

Definitely agree with you @EternalFlower regarding trust.

with my psychologist I don’t feel there is any type of plan of how she is going to help me. For mths she mentioned EMDR as if it was only option. Couple things happened which I spoke to her about including I felt I had no input into MY therapy. some work was done on Schema Therapy, after awhile this seemed to move to back burner and sessions filled with discussions about other things.

couple sessions ago something happened that left me feeling unheard. Session couple weeks ago I, somehow, fought back my fears, found my voice and calmly explained to my psychologist why I feel I can’t work with her anymore. I will continue with current psychologist until I’m able to start working with someone new, due to time of the year I’m hoping this is early next year.

There is something in the wording about one psychologist that ‘keeps jumping off the screen’. I’m hoping to have more info this time next week
