Talking through trauma and PTSD

Therapy types

Therapy types

Seeking help, thoughts, info from life experiences etc

currently doing schema therapy for CPTSD and feeling have hit a wall.

been reading little bits about ACT therapy and wondering if could be worth talking with psychologist about next session in couple days time.

wondering what type of therapy might help me coming to terms with, and deal with, ongoing grief from loss of family members 40+ yrs ago.

Psychologist has mentioned EMDR various times. Not something I feel I can do

Re: Therapy types

My pain management Dr is a lovely lady @AlwaysMyself

Her first qualification was psychiatrist and would have been very good. Very down to earth, gets to know her patients (including their interests. First time I met her we had comfortable relaxed chat for at least 1hr.

this will be my first hospital stay which is longer than overnight for many years. Due to couple of my physical health conditions I struggle to get comfortable in hospital beds. If this infusion is successful my pain will decrease again ( recently had RFA in part of lumber spine).

no guarantee one or both cats will let people pat them. My male has dry eyes due to feline herpes, has his own eye drops for daily use. I’ll be taking their comfort items (cat bed plus polar fleece blanket each) to the cattery. Part of daily routine published on cattery website is physical check of each cat morning and evening

hoping your hospital stay goes well and that you get four legged greeting when you get home

Re: Therapy types

I ve been thinking back to your message about being open with new psychologist about things I want/don’t want @AlwaysMyself

thinking back over last couple years with that psychologist there are various things that happened that I don’t want to happen again, if possible. Fault on both sides.

Things including making decision on type of therapy without discussing with me, telling me we would continue topic next appointment and that never happening (plus various other things).

im thinking of taking notebook and pen into every appointment from now on. 1) note down items agreed on, topic not fully discussed etc. 2) refer back to at start of each appointment to try to keep conversations on track (if needed).

I’ve been remembering one of the sayings I was raised with. Something I’ve said myself to co workers (when I was working). “There are ways of saying things and there are ways of saying things”, similar meaning as can catch more bees with honey than vinegar. Something my old psychologist might be benefit from

Re: Therapy types

Good evening @Flutterbug9,

How are you feeling today?

Oh gosh, that sounds incredibly overwhelming for you... I am really glad you will start to see the new therapist soon. I am so excited to hear how it goes.

How have you been supporting yourself over the past couple of days and have you noticed any shift in the presence of these flashbacks?

We will be here for you this week, okay? You're not in this alone. 💛

Re: Therapy types

Flashbacks stopped after few nights @AuntGlow

still feeling bit fragile.

Still remember some specific words, tone used stings.

I said being concerned about cats when they’re in cattery. Quite pointed reply included that it’s not normal and it’s solely due to my fear of abandonment

Last few days have been a mix of doing chores, playing games on iPad, trying to get my packing to work and spending time on the couch with the cats

friend who is driving me to and from hospital gave me lovely surprise earlier tonight. She’s going to bring fresh clothing into the hospital for me in few days time and going to do my laundry for me. Not used to anyone helping me with things. Involves driving fair distance plus paying for parking (she won’t accept money to cover parking costs)

Re: Therapy types

So glad you have a supportive and practical friend @Flutterbug9 😍🥰. Wishing you all the best for your hospital admission. And wishing you calmness with regard to knowing your cats are settled well at the cattery with people who are caring for them.

Why i am i up at 430am? Last dose of pre-prep for my procedure today! 😅😬

Turns out i dont like hydralite! I dont remember disliking it when i had it 3 years ago when ill lol. Thank goodness i can drink apple juice instead so i have switched lol.

Last night taking the medicine tasted ick, so i used a gummy snake for flavour distraction straight after each mouthful 😅.

Hope this gives a small laugh at my dislike of it lol.

Post-procedure i can eat normal again! Woo!

Re: Therapy types

I have understanding of prep mixture tasting yuk @AlwaysMyself taste of lemon makes me gag. I’ve only used peppermints after drinking the lot. I hear you.

Not being able to eat or drink certain things can be challenging.

after talking with Jynx plus lady at the cattery I’m feeling much better. Feeling of not being alone due to nurses constantly moving around is also helping.

Today’s strength of medication being infused is double the strength from yesterday. Yesterday went well. In bed approx 9pm as couldn’t stay awake. Plans for today are mix of sitting on the bed physically resting and going for short walk each couple of hours. All depends on, if pain medication that’s being infused, if I start feeling tired/need to sleep

Re: Therapy types

I am glad the flashbacks have stopped @Flutterbug9,

I think it's valid to be concerned about your cats when you are away from them! Perhaps core wounding may impact the severity of this, but your feelings are still absolutely valid.

It sounds like you have created a lovely balance of work and relaxation here.

Wow, that is so lovely - you absolutely deserve this kind of care right now. I am so glad someone is showing up for you. I read that you were able to move around yesterday, which is really positive too. How are your pain levels at the moment? 💛

Re: Therapy types

@AuntGlow, I’m one of a approx 15 people who are all receiving same type of medication infusion. Expectation is to move on regular basis, standard stuff for everyone with chronic joint pain. Also have to get dressed each day which is good, feels strange enough being in hospital when not recovering from something.

first nana nap today due to the impact of the infusion. Heading out soon for another short walk, all have been 97% pain free today. Next gauge of benefit will be my left knee tonight. Is great having pain management doctor that has holistic view, has given me info about med that can help with my sleep issues when at home.

Re: Therapy types

I hope the pain meds are working @Flutterbug9 , and I hope you feel as peaceful as i did when i woke from my anesthetic 😅 (i was dopey, but peaceful in that dopeyness haha).

I'm glad the nurses around help you feel less alone, and that you feel calmer now. I hope this continues for the whole stay. 😊

Do you overhear any funny stories/snippets of conversation from nurses during the day? 🤭

Sometimes esp when you dont hear the full conversation portions of chats can make ypu wonder "what was the context of THAT?!" Often gives me a chuckle. I heard something this morning, but i cant recall what 😆, something a nurse said to another one outside my curtain gave me a smile.

Re: Therapy types

Pain meds working well @AlwaysMyself and pain management Dr happy with how I’m going.

have gotten in few short laps around the ward today.

Body said ‘nana nap time’ earlier, nice couple hrs sleep.

I had great sleep last night (even though got woken twice by nurse to take my obs).

pain meds getting increased again tomorrow, will be decreased if I request due to side effects.

Hearing snippets from things said by nurses….. definitely. Each outburst of laughter leaves me wondering what was said that was funny 😆

happy to hear you woke feeling peaceful. Is it tomorrow you get to be released? oops, discharged 🤣🤣

read your post on another thread about veins. Great news you don’t have any theatre ‘war wounds’. My relatives and myself all joke we don’t have veins when cannulas are involved. 😂
