Recognising and managing mania

To coincide with World Bipolar Day, this Topic Tuesday, we're going to discuss how to recognise the symptoms of mania, how to manage it, and what to do after a manic episode. We'll be joined by special guests, @SusanaBA and @davidharper_bal from Bipolar Australia, a peak body organisation that offers support and services to people living with bipolar.

@Ayesha Keep holding on - we can be in limbo together. Whatever you feel like saying or not saying here is fine, I hope you know you're among friends here.

@soul mania can happen for other reasons (e.g. drug induced) but generally is related to Bipolar. That said, sometimes people with schizophrenia are misdiagnosed as having either mania or Bipolar.

@SusanaBA @davidharper_bal @Charli @Jess2

What things can you do to manage mania both leading up to and during the episode? Perhaps @Ayesha might find some of these strategies useful.

Bipolar I presents Major depresion episodes and can get all the way to mania, and in some cases psichosis, (loose touch with reality) The episode are very serous and can last up to a yr or two. After you get well you may not have another episode for 20 yrs. Like, 17 yrs free of meds and symptoms.

BII doesn't reach the extreme moods , only depresion and hypomania or mild mania and the difference is that the episodes are closed. Some are seasonal. dayly, etc

@CherryBomb @Ayesha I've found writing helps - I write for me, sometimes not sentences, just thoughts, words, questions - just getting them onto paper and out of my head helps.

The lack of sleep. Sleeping like less than 2hrs when I usually sleep around 12 to 15. Talking very fast. Time distortion thinking I am moving fast but actually moving slow. Not eating. Screaming crying. Getting angry. Yelling and swearing. I'm usually passive. Feeling very desperate. Trying to get help from many place but not able to focus to put in place any therapy/method.

@Ayesha Even writing on paper might help (old school, I know!) and you can tear it up later if you want to. Getting things out of your head might help. Please be safe!
