Recognising and managing mania

To coincide with World Bipolar Day, this Topic Tuesday, we're going to discuss how to recognise the symptoms of mania, how to manage it, and what to do after a manic episode. We'll be joined by special guests, @SusanaBA and @davidharper_bal from Bipolar Australia, a peak body organisation that offers support and services to people living with bipolar.

Criminality in bipolar is very rare, although if you have substance use issues as well that can get you into trouble. When you hear about a footballer with bipolar who has done something silly, there’s almost always alcohol or drugs involved. A lot of people with bipolar unfortunately self-medicate because they aren’t getting the help they actually need. But the story David mentions does illustrate the lack of boundaries which often becomes a really big problem during mania.

@CherryBomb The closest person is my mum, who lives with me. She sometimes prods me when I start to go off, usually indicated by increased irritability and not being able to focus on one thing.
However, I work interstate during the week so she can't be there to see the physical cues as she can when I'm home at weekends. But I phone her every day and she can tell by my voice where my mood is. She's my barometer and Sanity Check - literally!

@davidharper_bal wow that would have been quite the shock for his employer. Did he have Bipolar 1 then - is Bipolar 1 when people experience full mania?

@Jess2 mania sounds really distressing for you. Curious to know what your warning signs are that you're about to experience/experiencing an episode?

@BlueBay Bipolar Disorder is unfortunately sometimes misdiagnosed as Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) when enough information is not available or someone without sufficient experience is trying their best to help. I think that the key difference is that Bipolar features mania, whereas people with Borderline often have problems controlling their emotions (good and bad).

I was totally paranoid and thought they just wanted me drugged up and locked away.

@Ayesha things sounds really distressing and confusing for you right now. Are you feeling safe?

It's good to hear that you're going to hospital this week. Do you have supports to help you until then?

Hang in there @Ayesha. I feel for you and I hope it gets better soon - mixed states suck. What's worked for you in the past? Is there anything you can do now?

I experience heavy hallucinations ( auditory and visual ... delusional) and reality merges and I find it hard to test what's real
