Recognising and managing mania

To coincide with World Bipolar Day, this Topic Tuesday, we're going to discuss how to recognise the symptoms of mania, how to manage it, and what to do after a manic episode. We'll be joined by special guests, @SusanaBA and @davidharper_bal from Bipolar Australia, a peak body organisation that offers support and services to people living with bipolar.

World Bipolar Day happens every March 30, and in Australia we use the day to celebrate the fact that bipolar can be diagnosed, treated, and well managed. You can help us to celebrate recovery by Blowing Bubbles for Bipolar with the people who are important in your life. Each bubble’s journey represents the condition’s aspects, the highs and the lows, and the rainbow you’ll see if enough people all blow bubbles at the same time symbolises the hope of recovery. You can learn more at our website, http://www.bipolaraustralia.org.au/blow-bubbles-for-bipolar/.

I’m hosting a special event all day in Sydney’s Martin Place, right outside the Channel 7 studios. We will be blowing bubbles from 6:30am onwards, and during the day I will be joined by Prof. Gregory De Moore, co-author of the book Finding Sanity: John Cade and the taming of bipolar disorder. You are all very welcome to join us at any time from 6:30am to 5pm, and you can find out more at our website, http://www.bipolaraustralia.org.au/events/world-bipolar-day-2017-sydney-event/

Whatever you do to celebrate World Bipolar Day, don’t forget to take a photo and upload it to your favourite social media platform with the hashtag #BipolarBubbles.

@JasJac, I think we are going to agree to disagree on this one. At Bipolar Australia, we believe that medication and psychological treatment are the foundations of recovery for Bipolar Disorder.

@davidharper_bal, great tell me more about that authority and the research you have done talking to x number of consumers to come up with that? what happens to people who are allergic to meds? unable to access therapy etc.

I just want to point out that its ok to have differing opinions. We're all in this together, fighting the same fight to support people and improve the lives of people living with bipolar. Let's work together, and accept differences.

The right combination of medication and regular visits to my psychologist have been pivotal in my recovery from bipolar. I am niw completely stable with no fluctuations however I will continue taking medication as well as seeing my psychologist periodically. There is no way I will risk the stability I have today for all the treasures in the world. My longest mania lasted 2 years - 2 years that ended in pure hell.

Thanks @CherryBomb, davidharper_bal, had a few distractions here so will go back and catch up. Just wonderingvwhy it wasn't picked up before in hospital but when they're stuck on another diagnosis (BPD) & maj depression - theyre not looking outside the box and I only present to hospital in a depressive state. I'll mention it to my psychologist but think she's stuck on cPTSD, Im startingvto wonder if any of them know what they're doing.

Being allowed to have quiet time. And knowing that this could mean for some weeks. My family would pressure me to go back to work as soon as possible. But this only made things worse.
