Recognising and managing mania

To coincide with World Bipolar Day, this Topic Tuesday, we're going to discuss how to recognise the symptoms of mania, how to manage it, and what to do after a manic episode. We'll be joined by special guests, @SusanaBA and @davidharper_bal from Bipolar Australia, a peak body organisation that offers support and services to people living with bipolar.

Could either or both. A symptom of depression is a lack of energy. Certain medications also have this side effect. Does that help?

@CherryBomb @Ayesha as @SusanaBA mentioned earlier, the best thing to do is to make sure you have the right medication. Unfortunately it can take time to find exactly what works, and that can be frustrating, but there are lots of really great options.

In the leadup to an episode, if you can learn to recognise the symptoms in advance (e.g. based on prior experience) you can deal with a mood swing before it becomes a problem.

Once mania starts, the treatment is always medication, always a mood stabiliser and sometimes an antipsychotic as well.

One of the things that helps me. Is to avoid distressing/violent media. I don't watch the news much. I avoid scary movies and tv. I try to spend time around comforting environments like going to the park or a cafe. Getting out of the house is very important for me. Even if it's just sitting in the garden

@Ayesha that's ok, you can come here any time, just to read if you want to. I know Thursday isn't far away but as @CherryBomb has suggested, it might be helpful if someone can be there with you now.

@Ayesha it is a bit face paced. Perhaps check out other places on the Forums. The Hot Chocolate thread is a bit more relaxed, you can have a virtual cuppa and hang out with other people and just talk.

Re: Topic Tuesday // Recognising and managing mania // 28 March, 7 - 9pm AEDT

@Koyaback in the bad old days, before medication, people with mania would literally die from exhaustion (this never happens anymore). The body is under a lot of pressure due to the increased energy and lack of sleep. So getting flu like symptoms is often the body giving a warning that it's having difficulty keeping up with the manic brain.
