Recognising and managing mania

To coincide with World Bipolar Day, this Topic Tuesday, we're going to discuss how to recognise the symptoms of mania, how to manage it, and what to do after a manic episode. We'll be joined by special guests, @SusanaBA and @davidharper_bal from Bipolar Australia, a peak body organisation that offers support and services to people living with bipolar.

@Galaxyofthelost definitely a mood stabiliser and usually an antipsychotic as well.

Sounds like the behaviour associated with mania places a huge strain on relationships @mrkotter @Jess2 @Charli @SusanaBA. But as @Charli mentioned, working on your own health is an important focus. Speaking of which, what are your thoughts about recovery?

I'm interested in what all you think are the top five most important factors for recovery?

How long does it usually take for meds to kick in after they have been prescribed?

@soul depends. Some classes like anti-psychotics take about 20 mins or quicker. Mood stabilisers take some days (depending on what one), anti-depressants can take up to 6 weeks.

But check with your doctor - I'm no expert.

@soul depends on the individual and the medication. Everyone is different unfortunately.

@JasJac the basic idea is that because we only have self-reporting of symptoms to guide us, no diagnosis is entirely perfect. (They are working on genetic and MRI based tests so better diagnosis is coming soon hopefully.) As a result, when people have more episodes they report new symptoms, and this results in them moving from one diagnosis to another. Because we can track this (e.g. for hospital admissions) we can start to gauge which conditions have greater diagnostic stability than others. Schizoaffective disorder has lower diagnostic stability than either Bipolar or Schizophrenia. That's not to say it's not a real diagnosis, but rather that doctors are all human and can only work with the best information they have at the time.

When I was 21 and at uni, noene realised I was manic, I had good results on assigments , family when I visited them , my boyfriend probably happy with my high libido; one big problem though, because you are on top of the world do no take precaution for safe sex.

During my second episode I was at the clinic, all ways happy to socialise, talked to everyone non stopped, they talled me after that some time they highed form me!

I gave hard times to the nurses to have the meds.

I was wrongly discharged while still manic and I remember having all day music in my ears and probably not relating much to my family. I went back after a week. It was a bad mistake. I went to my work and I asked the eachers things like if they could write a reference about how they felt under my directorship.

They look very surprised. I didn't sound very convicing. When manic I know of people doing many thing to others that regret and had to ask for forgiveness

Sorry, was inhoying this but had to take an important call and back. Before we run out of time I have a question. I don't like labels so don't want another but I often wonder if I am bipolar and not depressive? I have highs I don't report because I feel 'normal'

TIME CHECK: We've only got another 15 minutes left. Now is the time to add in any final thoughts and posts, while we start to wrap up and try to attend to everyone's questions.

@Galaxyofthelost anti psychotics tend to be used for mania, in addition to a mood stabiliser. There are heaps of them and so I don't think naming specific ones is very useful, as this is more a conversation specific to the circumstances.

@CherryBomb The most important things are patience with yourself, acceptance and learning as much as possible about what triggers your moods.
