Recognising and managing mania

To coincide with World Bipolar Day, this Topic Tuesday, we're going to discuss how to recognise the symptoms of mania, how to manage it, and what to do after a manic episode. We'll be joined by special guests, @SusanaBA and @davidharper_bal from Bipolar Australia, a peak body organisation that offers support and services to people living with bipolar.

The side effects were the key reason I stopped taking my meds. I was twitching and stuttering and incredibly anxious. I couldn't work couldn't clean my house and I still felt like shit. The new meds I am on now are not so bad. But I am very aware of looking crazy. It's not enough to be stable I also want to function like a well person without drawing attention to myself.

How long does it usually take for meds to kick in after they have been prescribed?

I refuse to allow myself to be embarrassed by my behaviours during manic episodes @mrkotter. Very clearly I was not Kurra during these periods and I certainly had no means of behaving any differently during those times.

If I chose to I could easily be absolutely mortified by things that happened then. By talking about it openly and honestly I have been able to put those things in the past which is where they belong.

What I can do is do everything possible to prevent any recurrence and this I have done. My fear of mania is sufficient to ensure I remain fully compliant with medication and all forms of therapy. I cannot change my past but I can make my future a lot better.

@mrkotter @CherryBomb lots of people get embarrassed afterwards. You can imagine how the poor fellow who borrowed the yacht feels! And I agree that this can compound the depression - that is a great insight.

Although you can't change what has already happened, you can use it to change what happens from now on. Understanding your triggers, and encouraging the people around you to help you recognise the beginnings of mania, will help you to prevent future episodes. Past does not have to be prologue. And if you do control your episodes better in the future, I will hazard a guess that you will gradually feel better about old problems as they fade from view.

On a related note, I have said this a number of times, but it bears repeating. Getting the right medication and then sticking with it is critical.

@CherryBomb I lost a 10 year relationship due to my cycling moods, mostly my mania though. Taking off in the middle of the night on 'missions' and winding up in another State being detained under the mental health act... doing that a number of times was the final nail in the relationship for my ex-husband.

Anti-depressants are used for the depressive episode, are there other kinds of mood stabilisers for mania? If so, do you know at what point they are given?
