Sounds like the behaviour associated with mania places a huge strain on relationships @mrkotter @Jess2 @Charli @SusanaBA. But as @Charli mentioned, working on your own health is an important focus. Speaking of which, what are your thoughts about recovery?

I'm interested in what all you think are the top five most important factors for recovery?

@CherryBomb recovery is tough but well worth it. I've got an amazing girlfriend that I love to death. I would not have her without putting the time in to get better. My top five:

  1. Find the right psychiatrist - they will help you to find a treatment plan including finding effective meds
  2. Find the right psychologist. Meds provide a base of stability but the real work begins with therapy
  3. Exercise and find hobbies
  4. Meditation is good.
  5. Be kind to yourself and find people to talk to about what you are going through. People really want to help others - let them.

@CherryBomb remembering you take your medication as directed (for me anyway), is a vital part of my recovery. I messed with my mood stabiliser with dire consequences recently and have only been a few weeks out of hospital now. I learned the importance of the medication then and there! Also good self care such as meditation, mindfulness and exercise and diet are just as important in my book.

I also use an online mood tracker which alerts my doctor of missed medication and extreme mood changes. I believe there are similar mood trackers as apps for mobile devices.

On a related note, I have said this a number of times, but it bears repeating. Getting the right medication and then sticking with it is critical.

@davidharper_bal getting the right medication and sticking to it is an individual choice. the message you are sending about medication goes against the Recovery framework. It is up to each person to decide what supports they wish to engage with, they can reflect on what has happened before and choose meds with other supports or not include meds within their chosen supports. The NSW Mental Health Commission recently created a postcard about medication which asks about the impact of medication to someone's life. The benefits of meds can be varied during an individuals life. they can at times be a hindrance. individual choice, always

@CherryBomb my five most important factors:

1. Getting the right medication in collaboration with your doctors.
2. Sticking to the medication.
3. Regular contact with a psychologist.
4. Keeping your family and carers involved so they can support you.
5. Meeting others who have the condition, either electronically like here at the SANE forums, or in person through a support group.

@Queenie - I'm interested in the mood tracker you use. Do you find it beneficial and would you care to share what it is?

Re: Topic Tuesday // Recognising and managing mania // 28 March, 7 - 9pm AEDT

My memory of my manic period is very patchy and scattered. I can remember things like I spoke to my ex on the phone for 6 hours. But what did I say. I have no idea. I know at one point he cried so it can't have been good.

Trouble is I'll overspend, start big projects I never finish, rally people to join me then drop out... Talk fast and get heapa of ideas, The online quizes always score high bipolar traits. Is it worth looking into this late in life?
