Recognising and managing mania

To coincide with World Bipolar Day, this Topic Tuesday, we're going to discuss how to recognise the symptoms of mania, how to manage it, and what to do after a manic episode. We'll be joined by special guests, @SusanaBA and @davidharper_bal from Bipolar Australia, a peak body organisation that offers support and services to people living with bipolar.

@Queenie @SusanaBA @Jess2 and anyone else who'd like to answer, how has manic episodes impacted on your relationships? Is there any advice for how you can maintain relationships.

Man @CherryBomb, I'm not sure there is enough time to answer this properly. But negatively, big time. I'm pretty sure I have a few missed connections because my moods just kept on cycling - I was too unstable to hold down a relationship. Thankfully there was light at the end of the tunnel. My advice to others would be don't be too hard on yourself, you are an amazing person!

I tend to say my most bizzare things to my psychiatrist and as I said before I write pages and pages and post them to him and have no memory of it until I see him and he brings the letter up..... I can never bring myself to read it,

Is it possible for someone who has a manic episode to have no recollection of it afterwards?

Re: Topic Tuesday // Recognising and managing mania // 28 March, 7 - 9pm AEDT

My relationship of almost 9 years with my husband ended. I was so paranoid I pushed him away and his family and my Mom. My ex and my mom have forgiven me for the many terrible things I said and did. I have not tried to enter into another intimate relationship because I have a lot of healing to do and I found there is less pressure being alone than trying to meet others expectations which only make me more sick. I moved from sydney to perth and cut off most of my friends and family. I am slowly rebuilding those relationships but I am very embarrassed and ashamed so it's not easy.

What kind of medication is given to those with bipolar who demonstrate very obvious manic episodes?

Re: Topic Tuesday // Recognising and managing mania // 28 March, 7 - 9pm AEDT

@soul yes that certainly is possible, but I think that not remembering an episode is suggestive of psychosis rather than mania.

@davidharper_bal thanks for the link, I am here to have a conversation rather than read links. My understanding is that schizoaffective is one of the most severe forms of mental illness which resonates @Ayesha's experience.

Re: Topic Tuesday // Recognising and managing mania // 28 March, 7 - 9pm AEDT

@CherryBomb I managed to wreck the relationship I thought I had (part of my not having a total grip on reality) and wrecked another person's relationship as well. That was before I was diagnosed and I now realise that my behaviour at that time was manic.
Since being diagnosed, I've deliberately avoided romantic relationships - I was appalled at what I'd done and very wary of hurting someone else again. I also felt afraid of opening up to someone new, in case they rejected me because of my bipolar.
I'm almost at the point where I can see myself in a relationship but I'll only know how that goes when it happens! Until then, I'll continue to focus on managing my health.

@Ayesha I've had similar experiences. It does get better. I just want to say that you are an amazing person, you don't have anything to be ashamed of.

@soul I often do things and have a very hazy recollection but can't make sense of it . Also do stuff I can't remember and do stuff I wish I could remember!

It's totally alll over the shop for me..... I have lost my sense of time .... it's no longer linear or exists within sequence
