Recognising and managing mania

To coincide with World Bipolar Day, this Topic Tuesday, we're going to discuss how to recognise the symptoms of mania, how to manage it, and what to do after a manic episode. We'll be joined by special guests, @SusanaBA and @davidharper_bal from Bipolar Australia, a peak body organisation that offers support and services to people living with bipolar.

Re: Topic Tuesday // Recognising and managing mania // 28 March, 7 - 9pm AEDT

I managed to maintain some insight. I knew I was very sick. But the further I got into mania the harder it was to manage. For example I found myself plotting self harm in order to beautify myself. On reflection I knew it would sound odd to others but in myself I thought that my situation called for extreme measures. So I started looking up extreme plastic surgery tattoos and scarification. Luckily I had no money and wasn't convinced of my own skills in this area. There were other thoughts of hurting other people too but this was also out of desperation. I knew I needed help and just didn't know what to do to be taken seriously. Maybe if I did something really awful maybe I would get help was my thinking. Being manic is very distressing for me and I am very ashamed of how my thoughts get twisted. But the difficulty for me is that I do not present in a text book fashion. It's been the biggest obstacle for getting help.

@Queenie @SusanaBA @Jess2 and anyone else who'd like to answer, how has manic episodes impacted on your relationships? Is there any advice for how you can maintain relationships.

@Galaxyofthelost that is a very common problem as you noted. As @SusanaBA and others have related in this thread, mania can be very damaging even if people don't realise it at the time. However if people are often depressed, they can look forward to the mania as a form of relief. So I would even call it a type of self-medication in a way.

I usually had no idea @mrkotter until the police clapped me in irons, applied as much force as was necessary and got me the medical care I needed.

Shit @Kurra that must been a really bad experience and I'm glad you've been able to work through it and can talk about it now.

I've got a question for you - a lot of people with bipolar feel really embarrassed or ashamed after a manic episode (I know I do). This is compounded that usually they are now in a depressive episode. How do you manage these feelings? I find it pretty difficult. Does anyone else have any thoughts on this?

I get embarrassed by stuff I do when manic but people know think I'm .... how do I say? ..... a bit uhhhh out of character sometimes and all over the shop.

I practically have no friends and the few I do have describe the times we met as me being out of control 😳 I am SO ashamed of that

@JasJac @Ayesha yes schizoaffective definitely is a real diagnosis. However, it is comparatively common for people initially diagnosed with that condition to later be converted across to either bipolar or schizophrenia.

See for example https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/26498139
