Recognising and managing mania

To coincide with World Bipolar Day, this Topic Tuesday, we're going to discuss how to recognise the symptoms of mania, how to manage it, and what to do after a manic episode. We'll be joined by special guests, @SusanaBA and @davidharper_bal from Bipolar Australia, a peak body organisation that offers support and services to people living with bipolar.

@Froggett bipolar can be diagnosed after mania becomes apparent. So those core behaviours @SusanaBA mentioned before are a good start in terms of the distinguishing factors.

@Queenie it is super common to lose insight once you become manic. That is one of the reasons recognising the triggers and keeping constant with medication are so important.

In full blown mania I lose my insight quite rapidly @Queenie.

@CherryBomb My early signs are a sense of amazing well being, an uncontrollable sense of not necessarily appropriate sense of humour and people tell me that I'm looking radiant. That's when I start taking antipsychotics. I never ever want to experience mania again.

I bought 3 cars in 2 weeks, flew to Melbourne to purchase one item and flew straight back again. I eventually ended up with $181K debt - all paid off now. The end result was clinical catatonia for a 2 week period.

+1 couldn't say it better myself. When manic I had little to no insight on my condition until it was too late.

It's probably the effect of the change of brain chemicals and the shake up of regulating energy, sleep, appetite and mood

@JasJac increases in the speed of speech are commonly associated with mania.

Hi there,
I'm just curious as some of you have said many people enjoy the high manic at the time. Knowing someone with bipolar, he only gets anti-depressents which do not inhibit the mania and doesn't want to take medication to inhibit the mania. Is there anything that can be done or is this normal and fine for many people that simply enjoy it?

I usually had no idea @mrkotter until the police clapped me in irons, applied as much force as was necessary and got me the medical care I needed.
