Recognising and managing mania

To coincide with World Bipolar Day, this Topic Tuesday, we're going to discuss how to recognise the symptoms of mania, how to manage it, and what to do after a manic episode. We'll be joined by special guests, @SusanaBA and @davidharper_bal from Bipolar Australia, a peak body organisation that offers support and services to people living with bipolar.

I have ptsd from childhood trauma. For me there has been a big link between memories of the trauma coming back and hypomania. It's as if my mind goes into overdrive trying to make sense of it all.

Are you saying I am not proper???? Schizoaffective is a very real diagnosis

I'd be interested what your qualifications are to make such a statement

In the past, when fully manic, I lost all insight of my illness. When I am well or in a depressive cycle, I have pretty good insight, however when mania strikes, all insight goes flying out the window. Is this fairly normal to lose insight when manic?

I've done some pretty crazy stuff I wish I could take back is all.

Keen to hear answers on this question! For people who have experienced mania, do you have insight during these times @SusanaBA @Kurra @Jess2 @Charli @mrkotter and anyone else who can answer this?

@Ayesha sorry if you are offended. I am not a doctor so at the end of the day will defer to the medical professionals. However, I do recommend the Black Dog Institute's assessment program.

In full blown mania I lose my insight quite rapidly @Queenie.

@CherryBomb My early signs are a sense of amazing well being, an uncontrollable sense of not necessarily appropriate sense of humour and people tell me that I'm looking radiant. That's when I start taking antipsychotics. I never ever want to experience mania again.

I bought 3 cars in 2 weeks, flew to Melbourne to purchase one item and flew straight back again. I eventually ended up with $181K debt - all paid off now. The end result was clinical catatonia for a 2 week period.

Amazing that your Mum can tell how you are by your voice! I think there was a study trying to test whether changes in voice can indicate a mood episode

How is bipolar diagnosed, how are the behaviors distinguished from let's say a hormonal teenager

hey @Froggett first up that's awesome that you're here to help your brother!

It can be a little tricky. Looking back when I was that age I started to have symptoms but it took me way longer to seek help. To distinguish between different behaviours have a look at the Sane fact sheet on bipolar - https://www.sane.org/mental-health-and-illness/facts-and-guides/bipolar-disorder These are the sought of behaviours doctors look for when looking to diagnose someone. Black Dog has some good resources too: https://www.blackdoginstitute.org.au/mental-health-wellbeing/bipolar-disorder

Re: Topic Tuesday // Recognising and managing mania // 28 March, 7 - 9pm AEDT

@Koya no, psychosis is part of Bipolar 1. However because BP1 and BP2 are differentiated by reporting of symptoms, the diagnosis can change as you go along.
