How to challenge your negative thoughts

How to challenge your negative thoughts

Hi @Shaz51 @Emelia8 @Eve7 @rav3n @tyme and others reading along -

I have been diagnosed with BPD, cPTSD, depression, anxiety, eating disorder. I am also a survivor of childhood sexual abuse.

I saw my dr today and he has suggested that i try to 'challenge my thoughts'. I am at the moment on a huge downer with my depression - no motivation, no interest in much, can't be bothered, angry with myself etc etc etc and my negative thoughts are instant. Once these negative thoughts are with me I 'go with it' and it 'drags me into a spiral of negative self thoughts' (hope this makes sense!!)

my question is - how on earth do i challenge my negative thoughts?? That's not something i do myself because i get so absorbed by my own thoughts. It never occurs to me that i need to stop and challenge it.

If i am with my dr or psychiatrist and they point it out - then after a little while with them i can see it but don't believe it. (this is not making sense???)

i am struggling at the moment and don't know how to write this to you all

i get angry with my dr because he has no idea how hard it is to challenge those very strong negative thoughts

a lot of those thoughts have been ingrained in me since a child and a lot of them i believe to be true; the exact truth

Re: How to challenge your negative thoughts

hi @rav3n @AuntGlow @tyme

thanks for all your support xxxx

I saw my psychiatrist this morning and omg it was intense. i told her about my horrible sh thoughts and my mums birthday yesterday and the upcoming fathers day. all triggers for me.

we talked about my lack of motivation, my confidence or lack of; a new medication to possibly help with mood, motivation. but because i am so sensitive with meds we have to get it compounded to a much smaller dosage to see if i can tolerate it. it's more expensive but its the only way i can see if it suits me.

there are a few side effects so i have to be very careful and mindful and let her know. in regards to my counsellor and me telling her - well i read the email to my psych and she agreed it was short and to the point. so i sent it. i am anxious now because i feel she will be angry with me for cancelling our sessions. but then in reality i was getting nowhere and in need of a change. its the right decision but one i struggle with.

my psych was concerned for me today so she has agreed that if i feel any worse to call her. and she will call me on friday afternoon to 'check in'. she understands how hard these trigger days/events have on me and feels really sorry for me in that i can't see my dad.

roast chicken and veggies for dinner tonight. i am hoping to get a good sleep tonight with the help of a medication.

hope you are all well xxxxx

Thank you so much @tyme xxx

last night I was telling hubby about my session with my psych. I cried a few times. It would have been nice to get a hug from him. But he sat there.

i ended up taking a med to sleep and cried myself to sleep.

Today my daughter is picking me up to go shopping. Will have morning tea together. It will be nice.

hope you have a nice day @tyme

hey @BlueBay, sending you some big hugs. i'm a bit like your hubby, i sometimes sit still instead of offering a hug. i'm a good listener but i'm not great at knowing how to physically comfort people even though i care A LOT. it's something i'm still working on.

have a lovely morning tea and enjoy shopping with your daughter✨

Hello @BlueBay!

Thank you so much for the updates. I am really glad you addressed such important topics with your psych, that must have taken so much courage. It truly takes so much of our tolerance/capacity to show up, share our wounds, and reflect on our feelings with honesty. You should be so proud of yourself here.

Psychologists are very used to working relationships changing as needed, so I would be very surprised if she was angry. Out of curiosity, how did she respond?

That's so sweet of your psych to want to check-in on a trigger day. That must have helped you to feel so supported. I will reach out to you then as well. 💛

hi @AuntGlow

i received a reply email from the 'old' counsellor. this is what she wrote - thank you for letting me know of your decision. i would like to know how you came to this conclusion"?? to which i have not replied and wont either.

i have a feeling that she thinks it was my psych and dr that 'pushed' me into leaving. My psych called her three times over the past 2 years and requested she try EMDR with me. but this counsellor totally ignored her suggestions and told me 'you don't need EMDR, you have improved!!!

and the last two calls she never replied to my psych's messages. to me that says a lot as i always wanted everyone (dr, psych and coiunsellor) to be on the same page and it just wasn't working out that way. it was ending up to be too oiverwhelming for me and i was leaving confused, annoyed, angry and then vent it out to both my dr and psych. it shouldn't be like this.

where as now my new psychologist is in the same clinic as my dr and they will communicate if necessary and my psych always touches base with my dr in sending him a letter/report on me. so i know that they are all on the same page.

bit nervous starting EMDR this friday but i am sure this new psychologist will start gently and slowly; i doubt she would want me to end up worse or dissociate in the session.

nice sunny day here but very cold 3 deg. going to meet my daughter later on for coffee and chat which is always nice. then back home to rest my sore back. i ended up working all day yesterday 8.30-5.30pm and i am sore today. so i think a gentle slow day for me.

hope you are well, what are your plans for today.

Re: How to challenge your negative thoughts

hey @BlueBay lovely to hear from you as always.

your reason behind wanting to leave your counsellor is 100% valid and it makes so much sense. wanting a support team that feels connected and communicates with each other well is something everyone should have, and it's really great that you've made changes to get that level of support now. have you decided on whether you'll reply to the counsellor or not?

it's nice and sunny for me too, i'm sitting outside and enjoying the warmth while it lasts! i'll be having a dinner with a friend tonight, she'll be traveling overseas for her uni placement soon so it'll be my last time seeing her for a while. i hope the coffee and chat with your daughter goes well! what's your go-to coffee order?
