How to challenge your negative thoughts

How to challenge your negative thoughts

Hi @Shaz51 @Emelia8 @Eve7 @rav3n @tyme and others reading along -

I have been diagnosed with BPD, cPTSD, depression, anxiety, eating disorder. I am also a survivor of childhood sexual abuse.

I saw my dr today and he has suggested that i try to 'challenge my thoughts'. I am at the moment on a huge downer with my depression - no motivation, no interest in much, can't be bothered, angry with myself etc etc etc and my negative thoughts are instant. Once these negative thoughts are with me I 'go with it' and it 'drags me into a spiral of negative self thoughts' (hope this makes sense!!)

my question is - how on earth do i challenge my negative thoughts?? That's not something i do myself because i get so absorbed by my own thoughts. It never occurs to me that i need to stop and challenge it.

If i am with my dr or psychiatrist and they point it out - then after a little while with them i can see it but don't believe it. (this is not making sense???)

i am struggling at the moment and don't know how to write this to you all

i get angry with my dr because he has no idea how hard it is to challenge those very strong negative thoughts

a lot of those thoughts have been ingrained in me since a child and a lot of them i believe to be true; the exact truth

@BlueBay I am glad you are feeling a good shift within yourself about those memories after the EMDR session. I guess your psychologist has a plan about dealing with it, which would help. I can relate to the importance of dealing with thoughts and memories that have been triggering and learning to regulate and not get too upset.

Its great you are going away on a holiday. You have to do what honestly is the best for your whole mental health. I am glad you have a friend for company on your dad's birthday.

Re: How to challenge your negative thoughts

hey @Appleblossom

you know my whole life i have never ever been away from my hubby and kids (apart from hospital stays).

Actually last year was the very first time I went away with three of my friends, we went away just for 2 nights. We had a ball, so much laughter!!

This Feb we are going to inland Victoria where there is a beautiful resort. It will be very hot but we have an indoor and outdoor pool. huge walking track. Two of us will share a unit and the other two will have another unit next door to each other. Part of me is excited but part of me is feeling guilty leaving hubby home. he will be fine and quite capable of cooking dinner but there's this little bit of guilt. it could be because i have been there for everyone and never for myself. We are going for a week!!

Memories and trauma trigger very easily and they are hard to 'just let go' or as some of my other so called friends would tell me 'just forget it' or 'just move on' - boy that bugs me so much. i get so damn angry.

I'm off to the beach soon, going to be a warm day today. Meeting my D and little A as well as my daughters fiance and his two girls. It will be a nice day. Hubby is at work, no day off for him!!

I hope you are doing ok and have a nice day today xxx

Sounds like a beautiful holiday. Your husband will be fine. Female bonding can be good. @BlueBay

Today also sounds like it will be good. Enjoy. Treasure the moments.

Our feelings are our feelings. I am learning to allow mine to flow more. I had to force mine down, but through music I am finding more emotional intelligence and awareness, as well as the social side of feelings and music. Yesterday doing a music workshop helped. The plan was going from deep sad sacred music through to joyous and rhthymic to finish. I really like the lady who conducted. She is coming back next year in January. It was very special.

OOOoo @BlueBay ! Great to hear you had so many laughs when you went away. You totally deserve it!

Go for it! Emjpy it. I'm sure hubby will be okay.

Let us know how it goes for you! I hope fires don't stop you going. There's fires popping up everywhere and Feb won't be different.

Oh my goodness, this is incredible. 😍 I know you were feeling somewhat nervous and uncertain about EMDR and revisiting those memories, so to know that this has shifted your bodily response is really, really positive.

When will your next session be? 💛 @BlueBay
