How to challenge your negative thoughts

How to challenge your negative thoughts

Hi @Shaz51 @Emelia8 @Eve7 @rav3n @tyme and others reading along -

I have been diagnosed with BPD, cPTSD, depression, anxiety, eating disorder. I am also a survivor of childhood sexual abuse.

I saw my dr today and he has suggested that i try to 'challenge my thoughts'. I am at the moment on a huge downer with my depression - no motivation, no interest in much, can't be bothered, angry with myself etc etc etc and my negative thoughts are instant. Once these negative thoughts are with me I 'go with it' and it 'drags me into a spiral of negative self thoughts' (hope this makes sense!!)

my question is - how on earth do i challenge my negative thoughts?? That's not something i do myself because i get so absorbed by my own thoughts. It never occurs to me that i need to stop and challenge it.

If i am with my dr or psychiatrist and they point it out - then after a little while with them i can see it but don't believe it. (this is not making sense???)

i am struggling at the moment and don't know how to write this to you all

i get angry with my dr because he has no idea how hard it is to challenge those very strong negative thoughts

a lot of those thoughts have been ingrained in me since a child and a lot of them i believe to be true; the exact truth

Honestly, sometimes sleep is the most helpful thing when everything is overwhelming. I encourage you to get some rest and then revisit how you're feeling/what you are needing afterwards. We will be here, okay? @BlueBay 💛

Heya @BlueBay ,

Here's a hug for you and hope things have improved for you. It sounds so hard.

Weren't you seeing a new psych and that's why you left your counsellor?

hi @tyme
Yes I’m seeing my new psychologist this morning at 9am.
I’m looking forward to meeting her as I’ve heard good things about her. But at the same time I’m feeling very anxious.

Last night I took another med to calm down and slept well.

I’ve been sending a prayer to my dad every night. I talk to him and let him know how much I miss him and love him. 😥😥😥

I remember my psych appointments. Sometimes, after them, I felt like I'd run a marathon! @BlueBay

Please rest up and look after yourself.

Re: How to challenge your negative thoughts

Hey @AuntGlow

Gee I was exhausted yesterday. It’s amazing how much energy and emotions are zapped when talking to a psychologist.

she is lovely and asked lots of questions mainly about my childhood. To which now when I reflect is a pretty sad life.
no school friends

not allowed to go to birthday invitations

no school camp allowed

I was kept home all the time

it was a very lonely childhood at school

I ran away from school a few times

my life was so screwed up and it continued to my adult life - thanks to my mother.
I really never want to see her again.
she hates me I know it.

I feel very sorry for my dad

to be treated by her is horrible

he is stuck in the middle

can’t say a word because if he does she growls back and he backs off

I’ve seen it many times as a child growing up

I never ever got any emotional love from my parents

no praise nothing

it hurts

I copped it most of the time because I was the oldest girl

I ended up in bed by 8pm last night. cried myself to sleep.

I haven’t emailed my counsellor yet to tell her I’m stopping to see her. I’ll do it this week.

I was a very sheltered child. Very shy anxious and always sick - yet no one could give me an explanation as to my pain

I doubted myself all the time and still do. Can’t make decisions

I’m rambling sorry. Too many words in my head at the moment.
need a coffee
