How to challenge your negative thoughts

How to challenge your negative thoughts

Hi @Shaz51 @Emelia8 @Eve7 @rav3n @tyme and others reading along -

I have been diagnosed with BPD, cPTSD, depression, anxiety, eating disorder. I am also a survivor of childhood sexual abuse.

I saw my dr today and he has suggested that i try to 'challenge my thoughts'. I am at the moment on a huge downer with my depression - no motivation, no interest in much, can't be bothered, angry with myself etc etc etc and my negative thoughts are instant. Once these negative thoughts are with me I 'go with it' and it 'drags me into a spiral of negative self thoughts' (hope this makes sense!!)

my question is - how on earth do i challenge my negative thoughts?? That's not something i do myself because i get so absorbed by my own thoughts. It never occurs to me that i need to stop and challenge it.

If i am with my dr or psychiatrist and they point it out - then after a little while with them i can see it but don't believe it. (this is not making sense???)

i am struggling at the moment and don't know how to write this to you all

i get angry with my dr because he has no idea how hard it is to challenge those very strong negative thoughts

a lot of those thoughts have been ingrained in me since a child and a lot of them i believe to be true; the exact truth

Hello lovely @BlueBay! How are you feeling this week?

I am so sorry for my delayed reply, I have been able to catch up, and my gosh - what a whirlwind of a week for you. It looks like there's been some real highs and lows with your birthday, coming back to your job, working out how to say goodbye to your psychologist, and feeling the pain of your family dynamics and traumatic formative experiences - this really is a lot to process at once. I think you are doing SO well to manage it all. Needless to say, I am really happy you had a lovely birthday, you deserve it. 😊💛

Oh, how are challenging your negative thoughts going?

anxiety & panic attacks are terrible.

Hey, that's okay! Sometimes we don't have the space to challenge our thoughts... it sounds like things are very heightened for you right now, so let's go slow. Does it feel okay to come back to your body?

For example, can you explore some movement, meditation, or self-soothing (showers, food, and comfort shows help me most!). What do you think your body needs most right now? @BlueBay 💛

Hey @rav3n

I saw my dr and broke down. Told him about stopping to see my counsellor.
told him a few things she told me they wasn’t professional. That’s why I’ve been so overwhelmed. My dr was fantastic. He was very annoyed at what my counselor told me.

I went home emotional. I ended up emailing my psychiatrist rooms and my psych called me. She could tell I was in a state of panic and teary.
we spoke about my fears of letting down my counselor in leaving. And how I think she will hate me for leaving.
my psych waited on the phone while I took a med to calm down. She agrees with my dr that it’s unprofessional what was said to me. And I’m stuck in the middle. No wonder why I’m overwhelmed. Told her not sleeping due to rumination. Anxiety high.
also my mothers birthday this Monday so it’s triggering lots of anger and sadness.

im not good. Might take another med or two to help sleep.
