How to challenge your negative thoughts

How to challenge your negative thoughts

Hi @Shaz51 @Emelia8 @Eve7 @rav3n @tyme and others reading along -

I have been diagnosed with BPD, cPTSD, depression, anxiety, eating disorder. I am also a survivor of childhood sexual abuse.

I saw my dr today and he has suggested that i try to 'challenge my thoughts'. I am at the moment on a huge downer with my depression - no motivation, no interest in much, can't be bothered, angry with myself etc etc etc and my negative thoughts are instant. Once these negative thoughts are with me I 'go with it' and it 'drags me into a spiral of negative self thoughts' (hope this makes sense!!)

my question is - how on earth do i challenge my negative thoughts?? That's not something i do myself because i get so absorbed by my own thoughts. It never occurs to me that i need to stop and challenge it.

If i am with my dr or psychiatrist and they point it out - then after a little while with them i can see it but don't believe it. (this is not making sense???)

i am struggling at the moment and don't know how to write this to you all

i get angry with my dr because he has no idea how hard it is to challenge those very strong negative thoughts

a lot of those thoughts have been ingrained in me since a child and a lot of them i believe to be true; the exact truth

Re: How to challenge your negative thoughts

Hi @rav3n

I’m ok except for the negative mind and headaches.
I looked at my meds this morning and noticed I stuffed up again. Thought I took the med but haven’t for 5 days.
im confused.
I emailed my psychiatrist again and she hadn’t replied yet.

I can’t believe how I stuffed that up.
I think I’m getting brain zaps.

it's nice to hear from you @BlueBay and i'm glad you're doing ok. that medication stuff must've been really confusing, good on you for reaching out to your psychiatrist again. hopefully after getting that clarification from them, the headache, zaps and negative thoughts won't feel as overwhelming.

keep hanging on, and pls do reach out to 000 if things start to feel unsafe 💙

Is anyone around ?

my psych just called me. she tried to talk to me but I can’t stop crying. I’m not coping. My tears won’t stop.

Hi @tyme @Shaz51

I’m sorry for my post. I ended up going to bed and taking a med. I had a really good sleep last night.
my psych explained my PTSD and it’s very complex. it just got to me and I was very emotional and panicky.

Will try to catch up with a friend for coffee this morning. Then a lazy day.

im taking things slow today as I still feel tired.
thanks my lovely sis @Shaz51 for your support xxx

I am so glad that things slowed down for you last night @BlueBay 🫶

I understand how it feels when those big emotions come up and take over, and it can be so much to manage... you are doing really well, especially when you consider just how much you have been through.

I hope coffee today was really nourishing and regenerating for you. 💖

Hey @BlueBay I'm glad that today things are feeling a bit better. Coffee with a friend and a lazy day sounds like just what you need after what sounded like a really overwhelming session with your psych yesterday 💜

Hi @Ru-bee @AuntGlow @Shaz51 @tyme @rav3n

I’ve been sleeping a lot today. And cried a lot too.
I cancelled dinner with friends tonight. Just can’t be bothered.

I did see my friend. We were both consoling each other. Quick coffee then home to bed.
still in bed just watching the day go by.

I did email my psych as she wanted to know how I was going.
told her exactly how I’m feeling - overwhelmed, close to a breakdown and crying all the time

she hasn’t replied but maybe later.

my body is wrecked. Tired.

thanks again for your ongoing support. Xxxxx
