How to challenge your negative thoughts

How to challenge your negative thoughts

Hi @Shaz51 @Emelia8 @Eve7 @rav3n @tyme and others reading along -

I have been diagnosed with BPD, cPTSD, depression, anxiety, eating disorder. I am also a survivor of childhood sexual abuse.

I saw my dr today and he has suggested that i try to 'challenge my thoughts'. I am at the moment on a huge downer with my depression - no motivation, no interest in much, can't be bothered, angry with myself etc etc etc and my negative thoughts are instant. Once these negative thoughts are with me I 'go with it' and it 'drags me into a spiral of negative self thoughts' (hope this makes sense!!)

my question is - how on earth do i challenge my negative thoughts?? That's not something i do myself because i get so absorbed by my own thoughts. It never occurs to me that i need to stop and challenge it.

If i am with my dr or psychiatrist and they point it out - then after a little while with them i can see it but don't believe it. (this is not making sense???)

i am struggling at the moment and don't know how to write this to you all

i get angry with my dr because he has no idea how hard it is to challenge those very strong negative thoughts

a lot of those thoughts have been ingrained in me since a child and a lot of them i believe to be true; the exact truth

Re: How to challenge your negative thoughts

Hey @BlueBay those are some hard topics and feelings that you spoke to your psych about today, no wonder today has felt rough. Good on you for still getting to your doctors appointment after that as well.

Is there something that you can do tonight to show yourself a bit of extra care after the rough day you've had? Even if it's something small, just some type of kindness you can show yourself for showing up today

Re: How to challenge your negative thoughts

It’s hard @Ru-bee because there is so much anger in me.

I really want to rip into things. Break things. Hurt myself.

Re: How to challenge your negative thoughts

That anger is very valid @BlueBay Are there ways to express that in a safe way? Like ripping up pieces of paper, punching a pillow or cushion, yelling into a cushion or out loud if your neighbours don't mind

I’ve stuffed up badly

it’s my fault

I’ve been taking the wrong dose of my meds

[edited by moderator]

no wonder my mood is bad

my headaches are daily

my BP is very high

I quickly emailed my psych and luckily my dr was still at clinic.

I am so stupid

hey @BlueBay

oh my, i'm glad you picked up on the wrong dosage!! emailing your supports sounded like the right move, hopefully they're able to provide you support soon.

if you aren't able to get a response, and would like further support, there's also these lines you can ring to get more info:

take care, we're here for you 💙

wanted to let you know that i've edited out the tablet dosage (to meet our 'limit detailed descriptions' Guidelines) - hope that's okay!

Re: How to challenge your negative thoughts

It sounds like you both spend time connecting, but that you'd like it to be more frequent/intentional, is that right? @BlueBay 🥰

I can't even imagine how painful it would be to not have your mum's support and nurturing... you absolutely deserve to be heard and held. I am so sorry she hasn't been able to do this for you. I know it may not land right now, but please know her incapacity to meet you with love doesn't mean that you are unloveable. 💛

I understand why things are feeling so big for you right now and I can imagine soothing would go a long way. What is something you could do for yourself tonight to create some inner nurturing?
